ffdshow is not included in the installer. BMS currently does not install any codecs at all, they need to be installed manually if you want the videos to play.

The simplest solution is install an “all in one” codec pack such as the “Mega” version, which has everything you need built in:
      http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

If you’ve downloaded and installed the “Mega” pack you can stop reading now. It will work in both 32-bit and 64-bit exes.

The alternative is to get “pure” ffdshow builds from here:

      64bit: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffds…-bit%20builds/

      32bit: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffds…eric%20builds/

While the ffdshow installation comes with a 64-bit part, it is lacking a corresponding x264/vfv 64-bit decoder, which we need for 64bit movie playback. So ffdshow loads fine, but can not find an x264 64-bit codec that works with the (truly obsolete) “Video For Windows” system on 64-bit.

Go for the top “Looking for the latest version?” link from here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/files/x264vfw/

If you’ve been able to watch the videos in 32-bit mode and you’re wondering why, it’s because you’ve probably still got the 32-bit ffdshow codec/decoder installed from a previous Falcon 4 installation 😉

cant get it to work…but not the worst thing in the world, since i can access the videos easily in the subfolders.

my question: some videos are self explanatory, e.g. the intros, but some i can not assign to any scenario. can you help me out with e.g:
NEWSFLASH -CHINA ENTERS BATTLE- = video (NAME)?

          regards

I also installed the mega codec and videos do not play although enabled in the configuration on my 64 bit Win7 and BMS 64 bit install. I accepted all the default settings but the ad-aware malware.
The installation informed me I already had the ffdshow installed but video had not been playing.

Running the 64 exe in this archive fixed it. Suggest not directing users to the mega installer and instead to the real fix as suggested by starrats.
I uninstalled the mega and the vids play fine using the 64 bit ffdshow installer.

Windows 7 x64 here too and Mega still works for me.

The ‘real fix as suggested by starrats’ is actually listed in the original post, if you care to read it again. You have links to the 64-bit version (the 32-bit version if anyone still needs it) and the x264vfw. There is even an explanation as to why you need both files for those interested.

Just to elaborate its not my “real fix” its just the “same fix” as posted. just exact ones that i used, others may need the megapack.
yes these shortcuts are where I got these two exe from. thanks Darkman. i just posted for PV the exact ones that i used from your posted shortcuts.
Mega pac all in one version does cause some issues with windows ten but your last bottom link has the codec that works fine for me.
all the links necessary to get videos going are in original post. Mega codec pack problems may have thrown PV for a loop, but64bit link and bottom link to codec fix is working for win10 just fine.

                    Cheers

Hello all - new guy here. Still trying to get this all set up…2+ months into this and still don’t have a LOT of the setup figured out (havent even cracked open the -1 or the -34 yet) so I’m just going through and through the forum trying to find answers. And videos never hurt, so naturally when I found this thread I thought it would be helpful. Are these videos you are talking about part of the BMS install? I can’t find them. Are the tutorials from BMS or some other third party videos ? Any help MUCH appreciated…thanks!

those are intro videos when game starts and when campaigns start for cosmetic reasons only. If they don’t play no problem.
They are inside the Falcon installation and play through the falcon exe.

Finally got to the root of the problem…

THE problem is that BMS uses VFW (video for windows) ‘relic’ interface instead DShow , or MediaFoundation(win7 onwards).

VFW is mainly used for encoding stuff, yes still used, but dshow or MF are way to go…, since we don’t need to actually encode anything, just decode, and dshow is here for that … more compatible between various fourCC , not to even mention performance.

Well … that is for some day into the future 40-70weeks , since we’re not quite watching 5.1 HEVC (h265) movies through BMS interface 😄 … maybe

                            SO!! FOR 4.34 x64

You don’t need even famous ffdshow or complete solution k-lite mega , … just enough are (can’t stress that) !!! X64 VFW !!! some type of h264 codec

                            https://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/files/x264vfw64/

                            Happy VFW-ing…

So to make sure I understand, 4.34 videos are encoded in x264, and your second link contains a codec for it compatible with the (ancient) VFW framework that BMS uses?

why is this so complicated, to watch a simple video for immersion purposes? I haven’t been able to watch them for years. Bummer…

Movies in 4.34 are AVI and play for me, or am I just special :???:

                                  AVI in 4.33 tooo.

Or am I missing the point, as I usually tick “don’t play movies” as it causes problems at campaign end.

                                    YES
but it must be VFW type codec. (when checked again , right now, seems I’ve been mistaken for XVID , THAT CODEC IS NOT IMPORTANT ANYMORE, could be that I’ve mistakenly looked in 4.33 videos , SO FOR 4.34 ONLY x264 VFW IS NEEDED…. I’ll correct the post )

Hey, what problem did you have because of movies at camp end? … I mean, I haven’t see any so far, so I am curious.
There shouldn’t be any even if the movie don’t exist., it will just skip it.

The “Win” movie repeating itselve, and awarding Medals each time it played.

Had to use backup log book on a few occasions. Thus losing the win & all the hours.

(psst, I’m about to finish my Balkans campaign and I was thinking to add some multimedia , so that was crucial info for something to watch out, Thanks)

Wasn’t that a multiplayer issue only affecting clients, or did you experience it in single-player?

In 4.34 multiplayer, campaign and other UI movies are not played anymore (independent of the “-nomovie” command line option), since movies in MP can cause CTDs.
