Let me start by saying how much I love this sim. It is well crafted: the attention to detail is amazing, and if we are being honest, often overwhelming. I have literally spent hours combing the manuals, learning the systems, and then learning to APPLY said systems in sim. I have watched most of supanova’s informative and professional youtube training tutorials, as well as Krause, and a few others. But I have hit a snag…a fork in the road, lets say. I am able to successfully navigate a flight plan at speed and altitude, and land the airframe in one piece eight out of ten times; have yet to successfully AAR; can lock the Mavericks; drop bombs like Hiroshima; still having trouble telling friendly from enemy aircraft before I get shot down. Anyway, I am making progress. What is frustrating me is this: my tactics are woefully inadequate. This is not an arcade flight sim where I can just pull a tighter turn and gun down my opponent. Gentlemen, I am getting waxed…on Rookie! I am currently reading the Combat Air Fundamentals, and other docs provided with BMS (again well done), but am looking for other avenues to further my BMS proficiency, faster. Any suggestions? Thanks fellas.

Well you’ve been through pretty much the mass of hard copy stuff and the available vids.

About the only other thing is flying with humans MP. That’s probably your next step, finding a place to hook up.

There’s plenty of them around, I’m sure you’ll get some responses and invites.

Shouldn’t take but a split second!!! LOL

        Good Luck,

Drive to the turn circle, enter the turn circle on time, get to the control zone (ATA = AA = RNG), assess attack cues (4000 feet, 4 AA), prosecute with the gun. When you pull the adversary to the HUD it should be a violent pull with pulling power commensurate with stick pull STS. Extend boards as needed. Assess when to repo using 50 knots of Vc per 1000’ of range. It sounds easy but just takes practice.

ACMI record everything, and debrief your air to air fights.
You should be able to see what is happening to you.

The key then is to figure out what to do about it…

If the rookie AI is hosing you, flying against a full up human is going to blow your mind, unless the human is serving you up softballs intentionally for your training (which is not without merit, if you can find someone to do it)

Grab TacView Starter and start taping your flights.
Setup a 1v1 as you are now, but with rear-aspect heat seekers.
Try going into a circle fight with the AI but keep your speed at 330-400 knots. Try to get behind him and get him with a sidewinder.
              Build up from that.

Head over to falcon online for some multiplayer flights. Also try falcon lounge.

Are you using some sort of head tracking device? It’s an invaluable tool in close quarter fights. I recommend the DelanClip with FaceTrackNoIR / Pointtracker plugin, or if you’re on Linux, linuxtrack (works like a charm with the ps3 eyecam).

                  All the best, Uwe

I feel your concern is mainly about situational awareness at the moment. I see a lot of answers here are about dogfighting, but is it really your question? Are you actually struggling to shoot first beyond visual range (without friendly firing)?

In that case, I’d tell you Tacview software, but recording ACMI in campaign is a pain. Will let you confirm it’s your main problem at the moment before elaborating.

Join a multiplayer group so you can get some real instruction. Just reading about it here probably won’t give you great results since air to air fighting is a delicate art that is not easily mastered.

Watch “The Art Of The Kill”. That helped me immensely.

                        Cheers!

There are some very good suggestions here, depending on whether you’re having problems with BVR engagements or merged fights. Watching Pete Bonanni’s “Art of the Kill,” as eurybaric suggested is worthwhile. Attached are a handful of Fighter Weapons Review articles from the Jurassic era you might enjoy. I’ve shared a few of these via PM with some guys, but I rescanned those. The really big PDF (Turning Room and Turning Circles) is because my puny all-in-one scanner forced me to make a JPEG of the first page in order to get into a PDF.

The first one was written by an Aggressor pilot, a guy who would be my last Sqdn CO, ‘Lurch’ Gorman (the F-16 cockpit was very snug for him). A couple are written by F-15 FWS IPs (Larry New was a prolific contributor).

You’re welcome. I always sought out the FWR issues that had articles on air-to-air. The OOP, RoB, and Jink article was pretty significant in 1980 because the F-4 was still the backbone of the Tactical Air Force, and remembering NOT to give up against the Gomers motivated me when I flew against them. The mindset back then basically assumed you were going to get to the merge (except for F-15 guys who just knew that every AIM-7 shot was a kill). F-16 guys joked about the F-15s guys and their AIM-7M calling it the “I wish you were dead missile.” For a Jurassic era F-16 guy like myself, we wanted to survive to the merge and then we’d kill the bandit with an AIM-9 or the gun. In the last couple years from talking with co-workers (airline guys) that were also recent or current F-16 guys (Air National Guard or Reserves), the current mindset is something like, “if a bandit gets to the merge…you effed up big time.” Current technology from sensors to data sharing to missile Pk is that good. Which in turn allows for improved tactics making something like visual mutual support a non-issue because your wingman might be 5 NMs away (and you both have your radars in STBY). So…these article are for simmers like me who like getting to the merge and smile at the absolute beauty of the flow and geometry of air-to-air.

                                Cheers mate.

Completely valid. If you go to a merge, there was a breakdown long before that.

Agreed! Sounds like he pushed a bad situation. But for those who love doggie style, there is the dance! That takes time and practice. I always work on scissors. Getting my jet to work inside the swing gets you from a disadvantage to an advantage, depending on how much energy you have. Just my 2 cents……
