TGP MFD shows IR pointer during daytime when NVGs toggled on?
-
Hi all,
Experimenting with IR pointer of the Sniper. Read the manual -34 on this but couldn’t find a paragraph on the item I’m querying. If I overlooked, please just give me a pointer (pun intended) on where to look in the manual.
When we did a night flight, IR pointer works as advertised. I can point, both my human wingman and myself can see the pointer flashing on the ground with NVGs on and on TGP view on the MFD.
If I understand correctly, it’s an IR pointer, so not visible with the naked eye.
So we do a daytime flight and test the same thing. Indeed not visible with human eye. But also not visible on TGP in BHOT/WHOT mode. Is that correct? I thought that was an IR mode so the flashing should be visible on TGP MFD, no?
More bizar, when during daytime we activate our NVG’s, we càn see the pointer flashing on the MFD’s. Guessing the “logic” for outside view is somehow replicated on the MFD screens. Seems not correct, or am I misunderstanding something? -
IR pointer should not ne visible on the TGP. But this is a limitation of falcon engine.

ok, understood, thx.

Quick question.
If it’s Falcon engine related, I don’t understand why I can always see it on my TGP during a night mission (even without NVGs on), but cannot see it on TGP during daytime, unless I switch on NVGs and look at my MFD? Shouldn’t it then always be appearing on MFD? -
you can always see when the NVG is on (day or night). that is the limitation.

Ok, new question that could take advantage of this bug…
Some Vipers, like the BAF MLU have another position at the external lighting master switch besides off & on, namely covert. Based on the -1 found online, it disactivates all normal wing/tail/fuselage lights and activates IR-only lights, located only on top. That way, pilots with NVG can see the IR lights blinking, people on the ground cannot.
This could be done by implementing the IR pointer dots in a smaller size on the respective locations and have them activated when switch goes to covert in the pit. That would be awesome
