Radio Not Working
-
I’m not new to Falcon, been flying it for many years now but just did a fresh install of BMS 4.33. I’m having a problem I haven’t experienced before. I get absolutely no radio communication from anything including AWACS, other flights, own flight and tower. I’ve done the correct procedure for loading the DTC and I’ve tried both UHF and VHF but still nothing. On the radio control by the throttle the volume knob is stuck. I can’t rotate it at all even though it shows the green rotation icon and it appears to be at lowest volume setting. I remember being able to turn this knob so I’m wondering if I have a bugged installation. Or is there something new in the controls that locks the radio out until I activate something?

Do you hear anything if you hold the mal&ind button in the test panel? Should hear betty go through the jet voice messages. Also, click the intercom volume knob, it barely moves but click until you can hear something while the test panel button is held. The “vol” knob you might be talking about doesn’t move and supposedly control Ai vs IVC balance, but it doesn’t work still for me and didn’t in 4.32 either, but maybe for you since you clicked it, move that knob as well as the intercom to try to find the sounds. If you hear betty, then you are on wrong frequency most likely.

1.Set the CNI knob on left paned left to throttle from “backup” to “UFC”.
2. Set the UHF knot to “both”.
3. Set higher volume on both COM knobs. (COMM1, COMM2)
4. Set the tower freq via DED on COM1. Set chanel 15. Before takeoff in DTC you can preset the tower feq. with one click, it is recommended to do on chan 15. So in case you wish to hear and speak with tower of home base you can do it now. -
I’ve already tried all the settings. I’m not even hearing my pilot voice when he calls the tower for taxi and departure. I’m getting no talking at all.

Intercom volume knob will not animate except to show off. To test intercom function I recommend to click green oxygen switch to turn on pilot breathing sound and adjust intercom to comfortable level.
Next both radios are turned on normally and we press the COMM switch up and down. It is noted that VHF or UHF label will go reverse video in DED while the switch is held up or down. An audio “pop” is heard as either direction is released.
It is normal not to hear player voice if player voice option is turned off in settings. It is also normal for player pilot not to speak if there is a mistake in the message. E.g. I try to contact Kunsan on 292.4 instead of correct 292.3. So a mistake in frequency will make no player attempt.
When there is doubt to the radio function, forget preset channels. Using UFC press the COM1/COM2 override buttons on the ICP and type in the frequency.

When you press you button for UHF of VHF, are you hearing a mic click? If so, confirm that you do indeed have the correct Tower Freq.

Nothing, and I checked in the setup and player voice and ui are both activated. I also can not hear the pilot breathing when I click on the oxygen switch. I’m beginning to think that I have a corrupt installation.

I know it’s silly to ask, but just want to check the obvious, you have selected the correct output device, ie:headphones or others ?

Well, I’ve installed Falcon dozens of times over the years and the only configuration for sound is in the setup screen. I have everything going to the main speakers. I do use Teamspeak but the only thing I run through that is our coms. Otherwise, all of the sound is coming through the speakers. But the sound is funny. It’s not how I remembered it to be. So that’s why I’m thinking I have a corrupt installation.

After inital part of ramp start. I did not set CHAN 15 before I enered TOWER FREQ. Connection established.

I’ve tried it manually too and I’m not getting any communication at all. As I stated before, I’m not even hearing my pilot character attempting to talk to the tower so something is seriously wrong. Is there a way to back up the configuration file from my control setup? I’m going to uninstall everything and start over with a fresh download. I think the download I got was bugged.
-
Never mind, I found out what to back up. I’m going to do a fresh install.

I’d be happy to meet you on a TS and try to help you out?

Not necessarily. If you’re just on the wrong frequency your pilot won’t even attempt the message outbound. Tower is THE pickiest guy to establish comms with in the Falcon kingdom. Try joining mid-air TR433_05_AAR as Goblin31 and try to give a wingman command.

I appreciate the help but I’m thinking that this is a bug now. I have enough experience with Falcon over the years to know what I’m doing. I’ve entered the correct information in the data cartridge and tried it manually. Even in quick missions the coms do not work and this is after a second installation. I’m not just talking coms either. I’m not hearing the pilot voice at all, so something is wrong with this version on my system. Maybe the coders can investigate this as a potential problem and see if there’s a solution. I do hear the sound of the aircraft and the weapons though.
System Spec’s:
Nvidia GTX-970 (all latest drivers)
Asus ROG Rampage IV Extreme
16 GB system memory
Intel Core i7 4820 3.7 (no overclocking)
Windows 7 Pro 64 bit -
What airbase are you at and what radio freq. do you have set? Do you maybe not have the radio set for the correct tower freq and thus can’t get comms?

We finally figured out what the problem was. The game sound is not compatible with 5.1 sound output or at least it doesn’t work on my system. Switched to 2 speaker output and can hear everything fine now. Didn’t have anything to do with the frequencies like I was stating all along.

Sorry to necro a thread, but I just wanted to say thanks for posting your solution.
I had a similar problem where I could hear some sounds in game (engine, missile launch, gun firing) but no voice comms, sidewinder tone or RWR. The “Mal & Ind” test button produced no sound at all. I was able to confirm partially functionality using the Setup > Audio page, where you can test sounds (and I could hear some, but silence on others). Also, the gentleman who normally reminds me that “the airlines are hirin’” at the end of an Instant Action session was also mute
My headphones were correctly set to stereo in windows. I put them to 5.1, reverted back, restarted BMS and it’s all working now. Thank you! That was a very frustrating issue to troubleshoot. It may be related to windows 10 as I had recently installed that. I also have an Asus motherboard with their customised integrated audio chip (Maximus VIII Gene, with SupremeFX 2015 audio) which could be a common point of failure.
