Harpoon or AGM65G for Ships?
-
Hello,
So we now have the Harpoon and AGM65G for use on ships. What are the advantages/disadvantages of each and how to we select the right one for a TASMO mission? Also, how many Harpoons or AGM65G’s does it take to sink an aircraft carrier in BMS? I keep shooting Mavericks and the thing is practically indestructible
Thank you

Harpoon is the weapon of choice…longer range.

The right weapon for engaging seagoing vessels is the AGM84 (and others simillar). As Drac said much longer range than the maverick.Plus it has special flight profiles to dodge ship’s SAM.

Thanks, P, for giving me something to research on this slow work day.
Comparing the Harpoon to a Mav-G, the Harpoon has a warhead of 487 lb,a speed of 460 kt., a sea skimming profile(assuming BMS models that), and as Dracfalcon says, longer range.
The Mav-G has a 300lb warhead, speed of 620 kt,and no sea skimming.
To answer your question,IMHO it will take more of either to sink a carrier then you have. In fact, the only advantage Mav’s may have(if you can get close enough) is to put enough holes in the flight deck to take it out of flight ops. -
Also found that the Exocet (AM-39) on the Mirage quite good as well.

You need to choose the right weapon for the target…small ship, large ship, fast ship, slow ship, ship with onboard defenses? All combine to determine which weapon is appropriate.
-
None of that really modelled in F4.
still the Harpoon is the better choice in the game. More hitpoints against ships.

I find that hard to believe, particularly the shipboard defenses part…you don’t get any RWR indications for ship targets in BMS? Harpoon for standoff, Mav for in close…similar to A/A, as far as the decision making goes.

Ships wont shoot down harpoon or any weapon so if you launch at range it will hit.

No Harpoons
No Exocets
No MavericksIt is time for you to grow up: GUNS! GUNS! GUNS!
-
Guns for inflatable boats and ducks, AGM-65G or LGB’s for patrol boats and similar targets, harpoon or exocet for anything bigger that can shoot back.
Right now, ships don’t have a missile defense so most of them are easy prey. Until you meet those guys with SAM’s… Pretty nasty.
-
AGM 84A, more than one though.

…I’m not talking about them shooting down the weapon - I’m talking about them having the ability to shoot ME down!
