Comm talk
-
I’m playing in the manuals today, and found something I just never thought of before. To keep this simpler, let’s just talk about UHF.
On the Ramp, you turn the battery on, in Backup, with radios on and to Both. If memory serves, the preset on the Backup panel is preset to Button 6(which is Package 1 (349.00)).
Guard is 243.00. There does not seem to be a preset for that. So, I’ve always assumed the AWACS chatter you immediately hear is coming in via Guard, and that Guard is the “other part” of the both setting.
Do I have it right? -

Partially. Yes to both tuning the guard frequency but no to AWACS talking on guard as the normal. Guard is the emergency frequency so you should only hear people using that for emergencies as the name implies.

Ok, and thanks, S. So, where is this Guard chatter coming from? AWACS is on Button 6? If so, AWACS is part of your mission package?

I suggest you read pages 7-88 and 7-89 of the BMS Manual in your docs folder. It explains how BMS handles AWACS/Tanker comms. Not on guard btw.

There’s a hard guard transmit switch (squelch on, squelch off, guard). Guard is received in the BOTH position so no need for a preset.

Thanks, heading there now.And thank you also, Frederf
Update-“AWACS and tankers are “smart” like your flight members. They can communicate on any of the 14 well-known default frequencies.” -
Now in 4.33 you don’t have to use preset freq in the backup panel. You now can tune UHF to any Freq you want. Just make sure the switch (drawing a blank on the name, buts its just under the Preset Freq) is set to MNL and not Preset. Check out Page 24 on BMS1F-16CM-1 manual.
