Laser-guided bomb - Pickle like a dumb bomb or DLZ?
-
Hey folks,
I noticed there being a DLZ indicator on the HUD when deploying GBU-24 / 12’s, but could not find anyting in the manuals about it.
Question is: Can LGB’s be released in a launch zone (like JDAM’s) or only when the fall line hits the FPM?
Cheers, and appologies in advance if I did miss it in the manuals.

Been too long since I did anything with 24s but for 12s it really isn’t a DLZ, you should indeed just deploy them when the cue hits the FPM.

LGB’s are just ballistic bombs and have no glide capability so you have to wait until the cue meets FPM, of course it would fall short if you drop it earlier manually.
JDAMS have some glide capability so they have a DLZ.

It’s not a DLZ well it is kind of. The top of the bracket is supposed to represent the maximum toss range (45 degrees). The bottom of staple is supposed to be the level release range. Inside this bracket the idea is that you can do some kind of toss and get a solution to occur between level and 45 degrees. In BMS it seems the top of the bracket is the level solution and the bottom of the bracket is ???. The bracket is present the same on LGBs as well as Mk-80 dumb bombs or CBU-87 or anything loftable (no MK-82AIR/R/SE).
It is not like IAM where there is a launch acceptable region (LAR) where you can drop anywhere inside. It still releases when the cue hits the FPM like a dumb bomb.
LGBs drop very similar to dumb bombs except the constraint (left right miss) is much looser. With Mk-80 type a small miss to the side and computer will inhibit release. With GBU-12 (or any LGB) you can fly 1/2 mile to the left of the target line and the bomb will still release when you pass the “3/9 line” of the solution.

but,in 4.33, there is never a second solution cue with the LGBs.correct?. and another thing i noticed is when flying low ie for a loft, the bracket is just too small.like 1mm small. u eventually get the circle to flash 3 times but the caret is nowhere near or inside the bracket.

Flashing circle is pull up cue for LOFT.
once you get the nose up, you’ll see the DLZ open up
if you keep pickle pressed, bombs will release when the carrot hits the DLZ -

You get the countdown/cue-drop to max loft the flashing circle and the solution countdown/2nd-cue-drop at the current release solution just like Mk-82. The only thing that is different GBU-12 vs MK-82 in CCRP is if the computer will prevent release due to left/right misalignment when solution is reached (dumb yes, LGB no).
Bracket is either wrong in BMS or different from my information about it. In BMS top of bracket is solution and max toss is an invisible point above top of bracket. For loft use the clock counter in the lower right corner. The max loft circle comes on solid, then flashes, then disappears. You aren’t inside max loft area until the flashing circle stuff stops (circle stuff is all immediately before entering the max loft range). Max loft is better in 4.33 but going for exactly 45 degrees solution leaves zero room for error. Waiting a little closer for 30-40 degrees solution is more secure.
