Let's change all of the keystrokes in 4.33 - ya that's a good idea (NOT !)
-
Whose “brilliant” idea was it to change just about every keystroke in 4.33 from 4.32 ?
I can only assume, that either :
a) You don’t use the keyboard anyway (have all kinds of HOTAS / hardware switches)
or
b) The new layout is what you’ve always used, and thought it would be best for the rest of us to use your layout ?
or
???

Well, if you are not happy you can always go back to 4.32.
New keyfiles are better organized, better described, you have all the explanations and description with them, all HOTAS function are mapped so NO, it is not hardware dependent. Yes it is a process to adapt to them, and guess what, everybody in the dev team did. Personally, there is no way I’m going back to the old keyfile.
And if you still feel like “OMG I CANT FIND THE FIRE BUTTON”, you do know that you can use your old keyfile as long as you check for callbacks changed… (Docs->Key file and Input -> BMS Callback Updates.pdf)

That doesn’t answer the question of why the actual assignments were changed.

I’ve an idea……why don’t they change them to just your specific requirements mstram…then everyone can set up their files again just to please you…
-
mstram,
I read that the changes happened because of new functions that were needed for carrier aircraft like the F-18 and Harrier.

Typical response
And we will keep telling this typical response to people only complaining and criticizing, without trying to understand why stuff has been done this way. Or its just me that didnt get the memo that we owed you somehow.

Well, guess what, the answer is in your doc folder. Same folder as the doc I linked before, BMS Key file Manual.
-
mstram,
don’t believe that users of “HOTAS / hardware switches” didn’t have to make adaptions as well. There are people who spent hours to get HOTAS profiles or entire home cockpits working with 4.33. Everyone around here expected the changes and new stuff introduced with 4.33 to be of significant order, whereas changes to keybindings and callbacks simply had to be made. I had to overhaul my TARGET profile and key settings as well, but since everything is now set as desired, I’m now fully enjoying Falcon again.
So once you get yourself comfortable with the new keybindings, whats next? Asking whose “brilliant” idea it was to change just about everything related to Mavericks, many avionics related features, JDAMS and such? Maybe you should give it a chance.
I don’t get the point.
-
Young players , everything must be ready and easy less than 1min

How many fighter pilots (or simmers) does it take to change a light bulb?
Just one. They hold it, and wait for the world to revolve around them.
-
Who do you think you are? Work thousands of hours adding new weapons and avionics, new tiles, improving shaders, writing very long manuals, realistic weather, even the light of the airports are off when we are not landing? What the hell you were thinking? We don´t need to save energy here.
If that was not enough, you evil devs organized the DB and those keystrokes. Who authorized you that? I wan the chaos of other Falcon versions back!!!
And to complete….for the first time in the history of a PC mil sim, electronic warfare is coming to life…I can see electronic bands for the RWR!
And, come on, how could you do that for FREE??? I really cannot understand what you were thinking when you decided to do all that.
-
Hi ms, but :nosep: is that realy all you got, some keys changed ?
:munch:
-
The new keyfile is a million times better than the old one. Everything is just much more logically arranged. (No HOTAS here.)
-
I didn’t do the work but if you want someone to blame for motivating this change, I’m probably the person more responsible than anyone else.
Sorry you don’t like it. There were however sound reasons for making the changes. Changes that have in fact been long overdue and will end up making life easier, probably for keyboard-only users more than anyone else actually.
Change is of course painful to some degree or another so there’s no denying that you feel that pain. It is my hope that you will eventually come to see that the layout is better now and that the difficulty in relearning a few key bindings was in retrospect worth it, even to you personally.
-
Oh, I love the new layout!! I was fiddling with the .key files before Kolbe came onto the scene and I must say that was very annoying! I’m so glad Kolbe has come up with a good arrangement and also that it is official in BMS now.
What I am confused about is the difference between the Full.key and the Pitbuilder.key. I expected Pitbuilder to just “add in” and keep what is already in Full. For instance, in Full, DF/MRM/Cancel was mapped to D/M/C keys. In Pitbuilder, it is SHIFT+N/SHIFT+M/SHIFT+, so it gets confusing. I use Morphine’s profile for the WH but I also use Helios for my “pit.” Because of this, I didn’t really want to use the Full.key as I use the switch state callbacks instead of the toggle callbacks. However, with the new .key files, I had to fix the TM WH profile as well because the new key bindings “broke” it.
Not complaining though!! I know I’ll only need to do this once, and then I’m sorted… at least until 4.34 comes out!

What were the “sound reasons” ?
How does re-assigning (some of the) shortcuts that have been the same since the original Falcon, “make life easier for keyboard only users” ? (Which I’m not, I do have a “controller” of sorts, just not a HOTAS).
Here’s a thought, why not leave the working shortcuts as they were, and anything new leave them as unassigned ?
And / or put the new shortcuts in a new key file, and include the old one. (There are two or three files there I see (“basic … full” etc).
Yes this is a “first world (very minor problem)”, but it could IMO have been handled better :
A friend of mine, (who knows better than me to post here) sent me his comments :
“Man, they made a mess of the keyfiles. No rhyme or reason to the changes, it’s taking hours to look up and change my hotas mappings.”
“The annoying problem is that they changed the modifiers for the same keystroke in quite a few cases. So if the original was something like Ctrl+key they changed it to Shift+key or Alt+key, instead of preserving the original and adding new ones. That’s the part that is cumbersome, it’s a pain in the ass to find the original keystrokes in the comparison docs, because the old strokes they are documenting don’t necessarily correspond to the 2 or 3 standard keyfiles that were in use in 4.32. And some keystrokes have been depracated and removed for some reason.”

The arrangement, headings etc are very nice. Especially in the U.I editor, (the only thing I’m using as I can’t get the spreadsheet editor to import a file).

Bulldust. Only had to read two manuals to see where the keyfiles disagree with each other. Big complaint over 4.32 was that the old manuals included had old key combos that stopped being accurate in the year 2000.
Anyway, you dont like it, make your own. That’s what Kolbe did, and the BMS team liked it enough to make it official.
@mstram:Fixed your post.
BullSHIT.

On a side note I love the new Key layout, if you don’t like the bindings then change them, it only takes an average level of competence to do so and a few hours of your time.
I did !
Edit: I didn’t change much & I had my reasons.
