I was looking for the thread where I thought I saw this as a known issue, but did not come up with in in search. Just curious:

I set target steerpoints for 3 targets at an airfield, different from mission steerpoints (used WDP btw). I set 1st target steerpoint when 20 miles out from airfield, designated on FCR and on TGP and told wing to “attack my target”, did the CZ dance, set next steerpoint, designate etc and told element to do the same, CZ dance and set the last one for myself and took out the target. Wings dropped 1 bomb and missed each one. Used GBU’s with TGP obviously.

Am I missing doing something or is this just the way it is?

      thank you.

        Hi,

Note that in a campaign mission, it MIGHT be possible that because of a known bug (well at least known to me :)), and because of some changes that were made to the AI LGB Basket “time freedom” than 4.32, the AI sometimes can miss the designated target when there are many targets in the close vicinity (i.e campaign environment). I saw this bug as well (in a campaign mission in ITO) and tracking it down proved me that the AI seems to be “looking” for different targets during a bombing run and once he find a target that satisfy the LGB targeting solution, he will drop his bomb there, even if the bomb actually has no chance to hit, and usually you will see it dropped short of the designated target.

FWIW I already fixed that for next Update, and I also on the way found some AI “Attack targets/Attack-My-Target” related bugs, a known example (again known to me :)) is that if you have some enemy ACs/choppers nearby and you are just about to attack your target with your wingman/flight, once you give them A-G attack command, they can suddenly go AA mode and run chasing those enemy airborne targets instead of the designated A-G target that you instructed them to attack. It maybe sounds good if there actually serious airborne threats to your flight, but I saw them (and reproduced in campaign) going to chase some C-130 or some choppers 15NM out instead of dropping bombs on a dangerous AB that hosting enemy RAFALEs. This kind of bug also expected to be fixed in an update.

Thank you for your explanation I-Hawk. It has to be very difficult programming AI responses to have them react the way we want them to. As I only play SP in the sim, it is very satisfying when in fact they do handle a particular situation the way you think they should, regardless of the outcome.

Yes, in-fact I also fly a lot of time SP and I felt on my flash how it is when i plan a critical AB attack with my wingman and suddenly he is missing or not going after the target I instructed him, that is very frustrating and actually that’s what drove me to find those bugs in the first place 🙂

AI in campaigns sometimes will not drop ordinance though the target is available including bombs on runways and sead escort not using jsow on aaa during OCA strike I just watched. The strike flight did hit the runways but the escort flew over and rtb with their ordinance while the strike flight was being engaged by K19’s. SO often things work fine yet for some unknown reason AI will do dumb stuff.
