Nevada-Fallon Test Range 4.33
-
I am looking at creating my own Nevada theater for BMS 4.33. I have the tools downloaded and working on downloading the data to create the map. Anyone that has experience and wants to help let me know. I know going through the holidays not much will happen, but hopefully first quarter of 2016 I can get a basic map working. I haven’t decided if I am going for the full scale of the old Nevada 4.32 or start with a smaller more managable areas.
I love NAS Fallon and want to create some of the Bravo ranges like KOTAR in KTO. Anyways this thread is to share progress and discuss ideas.
End goal would be able to have a range wide ‘Red Flag campaign’. But that may be a bit more then I can provide. At this moment I just want to get something into 4.33 and working.

You’ll need to use a browser that can directly open a .pdf.

Ripper,
even if I’m just not a theather-maker expert, you always can count on me and the few I can do as a beta tester of your work, when it’s finished.
Best wishes and regards,

Thank you Jackal. As this is currently a one man job, I will take all the help I can get. Once we have something testable I will let you know.
First I sent quite a few PM’s out to different people asking a host of different questions and I want to thank everyone for their responses and taking the time to help me.
I have read every thread I can find on this site (and others) that concern NV. I will be looking to create a large scale theater as there appears to be visual issues at altitude in small theaters. (Think about flying at mach in Switzerland.)
I have also decided to steer as far away from any PMC/other falcon politics regarding this theater and attempt to do everything from scratch or with written aproval from third-party devs.
Over the holiday I will take some time to create the scope of the project, list some short and long term goals, and workout a working timeframe to complete these goals. Again first up is getting a map/data together Q1 of next year.
Thank you guys.

Make it work/operate like the Range Guide, and it WILL be the best one yet…!

Guys this theater is not a realistic theater ATM. The tiles get too repetitive in this theater. As I have worked on and released a version of Nevada it is not even worth the time or effort. My Nevada theater is still on my hard drive but I am not going to waste time in converting it to 4.33.

Thanks for your attention, Ripper.
And as a fist proposal by me, I’ll drop you this idea for a campaign: an invasion of California (and Nevada too, if for this) state(s), having John Milius done it or not, this doesn’t matters. For instance, can you figure the face of all of those actors realizing that and its consequences for their future? And those poor gamblers and mobsters in Las Vegas too?
Merry Christmas, and best regards,

Still doing some research. I was able to get the PMC campaign into 4.33 and fly around a bit.
I understand what Lawndart was saying more now. The reason this theater is so repeative is the sheer size of the land. If you look at the theaters that work best they all have large bodies of water that take up 30-40% of the map. This allows you to have less repeative tiles on the land.
Scale of the map will be the biggest thing to determine.

PMC Nevada in Peregrine software. Just using this to test out the software and get an idea of what is going on there.
One thought I have is to not make the airbases different, or to only use a select few of the stock airbases and to then limit the number of airbases in the theater. As that should help save some tiles.
-
I’m all for making the terrain as true to life as possible, based on Google Earth or topo map info - how much time/effort/disk space would something like that take?
-
Idk. I am still doing some research and may wait for Peregine software to be fully released before I start.
-
You’re making me curious about just how this is done…I’ll be following.

Good idea
that will also limit the amount of work for nav stuff and airbase stuff.
with my airbase, navigation and Kotar experience, I would advise to stick with 5-6 airbases in total, a lot of MOA, two three different ranges (or maybe more) that will be more than enough for a specific training terrain allowing many different scenarios.
With a decent navigation suite and support, it’s a great initiative.
I have been dreaming of Nevada in BMS since flying Falcon 3.0 And that’s now the only reason why I go DCS from time to timeI already did some work on Nevada ideas but none were brought to conlusions. I hope yours will
here’s a prototype of the ONC map I did ages ago:

I am thinking 6-8 airbases total (with two different AB designs).
For Sure: Nellis (KLSV), NAS Fallon (KNFL)
Almost certain: Tonopah Test Range, Groom Lake (KXTA), Wendover Air Base, Hill Air Base
Potential: LAX, Luke AFB, Edwards AFB…
I am reading and researching Red Flag to see the areas, bases, and get an idea of how it works. That way I can use bases that are used for it.
I am looking at doing four ranges total. 2 for Fallon (Bravo 19 and Bravo 20) and 2 for Nellis. I may look at including TE’s for each range. I have thought about doing some TE’s for Fallon that mimic Top Gun hops.
I would like version 1 to have atleast one working Red Flag campaign. In future versions we can include additional campaigns.
I also like the water in the corner because we can park a carrier there and fly navops to the ranges…

There was an interesting document on DCS a few days ago, let me see if I can find the link

I’d suggest adding Chreech AFB as well, if you are going to go as far south as Nellis…it’s a simple one, and in the area. And if you’re going as far south as KEDW, then you should include KNID - since you are doing the Navy thing as it is!
That actually makes more sense than a CV, really.
