Aim-120 Post Launch
-
Hi,
I had an incident today where I fired an Aim-120 at a Mig, i quickly lost lock as I very low and trying to avoid the fight all together, I imagine i lost lock before pitbull. The missile apparently ended up hitting a friendly aircraft who happened to be nearby. Could someone explain to me how the Aim-120 works if lock is lost on the FCR before pitbull? Does it just try and acquire a target close to the originally locked aircraft?
Thanks,
-
Well, even if you maintain the lock, you can still hit a friendly. Thats why you dont shoot missiles at friendlies.
When the missile gets close enough to the target (or to the targets last known position, if you lost the lock) it switches on its own radar, and tries to find a target where it thinks it was supposed to be. If a friendly happens to be in the way, well it sucks to be them.

So in this situation, I shouldn’t have fired any type of missile? simply because of the friendlies? I imagine the heaters could cause problems as well if a friendly runs in close.
-
Heaters are less of an issue because they never have a search mode, but IRL the only time you will see someone shoot without a Clear Avenue of Fire is when them not shooting results in the friendly dying anyway.

I haven’t experienced it myself, but the guys I’ve started flying with have regaled me with tales of a 9X coming off the rail and immediately homing on a friendly Viper because it was hotter than the target MiG, despite being locked on said MiG. So yes, it’s entirely conceivable that a heater will go for a friendly if they happen to be hotter than your original target.

Exactly.

Shouldn’t happen normally. But we had that in our squadron also a friendly kill with an Heater (IRIS-T i think) despite the fact the sensor was uncaged and pointing at the bogey. At least the pilot firing it said so

Hmmm, not unheard of…. if you can find a repro case or at least clues on how to reproduce, that would help.

Have to add it was 4.32 with Aegean 1.6 ….

Or use SARH AAM.

Yes, the benefit of having missiles which are hard to hit anything with is that they wont hit friendlies either….

Now AIM-7F/M have the kinematic range wha they have in RL and deserve. Yes, they are vulnerable to many things but at least you can have someting.

Try Instant Action in Ace mode and report back
I expect to see you with a few Alamo-A fragments through your forehead

It will lock on to the first aircraft that enters it’s WEZ regardless of friend or foe if you lose lock before pitbull hence launching in furballs is not smart. Normally the friendly will make a radio call advising you he is very unhappy.

that’s an important one
the Problem has been known to happen on 4.32, but we could not reliably reproduce as it is a very rare.We have yet to encounter it in 4.33, but if you do, please let us know.

I thought instant action was bugged and unsupported? I had even thought I heard murmurings about the button for it being removed in future versions, but 4.33 has come and lo, it is still with us…

might change in the future.
but for now, it is here and will not go away till we’ll have a fitting successor.
