HAS Mode DEAD Question
-
If an emitting radar shows up on the HAS screen, does that mean it is within the range of the AGM-88? Thank you for any assistance.
-
No.
Lock up the target, and observe the carot within the bracket on right side of HUD. -
No.
Lock up the target, and observe the carot within the bracket on right side of HUD.In HAS all I have on the HUD is a rectangular box. Once I TMS Up on a SAM, no bracket appears on HUD (like it does with HAD mode). The HAS page on the MFD turns into a cross and the targeted SAM radar is highlight, but that’s all I get.

From the training manual (chapter 12.2, page 111):
HAS mode does not provide HUD in range cues as the missile is unable to compute range to the radar. We know that the HARM missile has a range of 60-65Nm in BMS so in range must be deduced from the HSD and PPT threat rings.

Sorry… I was thinking HAD

Thank you Guys. I really have read (and reread, and referenced) the many manuals, but obviously did not recollect (or find again) that bit of info. Here’s why I asked the question:
I am in a campaign at a point that China has joined and I chose a SEAD mission for an OCA package deep into enemy territory. I was preparing on the mission UI map but there were no indicated SAM or SAM units to prepare target stpts or threat rings for anywhere near the target. The only information was a reference to SA-10’s being a threat in the briefing. For what I was flying, HTS not an option. No prepared STPTS, so no PB option (as far as I understood). A SAM 10 radar appeared on the HAS screen, I locked up, but had no reference to distance from.

From the training manual (chapter 12.2, page 111):
I ran this mission and for reason did not think of this to reference. My bad. Thank you

Yeah SA-10 threat circles never on planning map. But PRC and CIS always have them and as soon as they join the fun first mission should be hit them with AGM-88 asap. In HAS any symbol right above the top line or close to it is normally engageable. If you have a wingman lock up the 10 and ask him to attack it the radio call will tell you how far away it is. At 35 miles or less and its emitting means you will probably destroy it, at times even out to 50 but note you will also be engaged often with no cockpit warning and the only way I have evaded the mighty SA10 is diving and getting low awaiting my harm to [email protected]:

Use the search mode and low altitude for the rwr. The SA-10 search radar tends to appear on the rwr at about 83nm. You can hear it’s tone. Listen carefully for a tone change and then you will know it’s changed from search radar to fire control radar. This usually happens around 55nm. It will shoot at you shortly after with no launch warning. You can use these things to get an idea of its range and when you can fire the HARM. You don’t want to get any closer than about 45nm before pumping or it will get you.
You can also try to triangulate its position using the rwr. Another method is to use acmi tape and treat it like Intel so you can place a ppt on the map to shoot in RUK mode. The acmi method takes quite a bit of effort to know your position but after that you get the bearing and distance to the flap lid.
