OCA Missions Failures
-
In campaign, I have been on OCA missions and nailed the runways with LGBs. I have escorted flights and seen the same. Yet the missions end up failures. In some instance says no damage, in some it says the flight never made it there. Is this other’s experiences as well and thus just a campaign bug? Just wondering.

If bogies got past you and completed whatever their mission was…you failed.

Thanks, but not sure I fully comprehend your answer. 3x now I have been on an OCA where I had to bomb a runway. I set tgt steerpoint at the section of the runway with a high value (from recon page), and with TGP have bombed and hit it as have members of my flight, but in each instance it failed. If a bug, I get it. If I’m doing something wrong, the heck if I know what!

If the runway was already destroyed you will get mission fail that’s usually the only way if you are the strike flight. Map recon the target just before takeoff and look to see if the runway(s) are destroyed and make sure you hit the operational runway if that is your target. Also, from the map look for friendly aircraft to see if they are also targeting the same target as that happens too. I had issues with Durandels hitting yet no damage hence I use GBU-24 a/b normally.

Thank you. Good points and having played many versions before I actually am aware of them. So I checked that in fact the runways were not already destroyed (actually they did say “repaired”, maybe that has something to do with this) and if other flights were sent in mission I got there before them (or joined an earlier flight if 2 were sent to the same base). Perplexing.

With 4.33 I task almost every mission and leave only some barcaps for the AI ATO so I know wtf is going on in theater. It is a lot of work yet quite enjoyable. The runways will be repaired in 2 hours or so with or without an engineer unit onsite. So first thing I do is take out the sams rolling them back, then hit the airbases and soon enough the reds are no longer up in the air except for helos which fly out of army bases. Right click on any red aircraft and you can see where it came from then hit that airbase quick. Then I systematically decimate (yes with JSOW’s) the red horde and my ground units start advancing. The airbases and sam sites respawn so you have to keep hitting them and completely destroying the entire sam site otherwise they reactivate. Hit the airstrips too because they will have alot of Mig19’s taking off from them. The default loadouts for F16’s now include wingtanks YEAH! but not the F18’s and insure you have the sensor needed for TGP with F18’s. Managing the campaign yourself is very rewarding and you know what’s going on all the time. Hit the nukes, chemical plants and refineries then anything else that is a target.

I can honestly say that if I take all those steps and see the runway is NOT destroyed (remember there are typically 3 runway sections per airbase runway, 2 per airstrip) and I hit it with a fat bomb it destroys it and mission accomplished brother!

This is one of the tricky parts about HQ assigned taskings as you can select an OCA strike and even verify that the place is still alive (hafta do that as well as the HQ is know to assign strikes to already dead airfields) and even then get a fail as the HQ had assigned multiple packages to the same airfield and your package wasn’t the first to arrive.

That’s not “really” and OCA mission…unless you get there before the bogies take off and stop them from taking off. In an “Offensive Counter Air” mission as I know it, your objective should be to deny an air threat it’s objective…if your primary mission is to take out the runways, then technically - again, as I know it - it is a Self Escort Strike mission and you should get credit for taking out the runways. So I can only wonder if the mission ROE itself isn’t somehow clearly/properly defined?

Now I understand you, and indeed that may be what happened, don’t know for sure. Thanks for explaining.
