Terain Follow Radar Bug Or Pilot Error?
-
Hello all I have been enjoying this wonderful mod for a while now and recently updated to BMS 4.33 U1. I decided to start learning some of the more “advanced” features of the F-16 and I am using the practice TE mission for Terrain Following and reading the Training manual along with it. Every time I turn on Terrain follow to Norm I get a slew of errors and warnings; WARN on the HUD, TFR LIMITS flashes in both MFD’s, Avionics Fault in the lower right warning panel, MASTER CAUTION light and TF FAIL on the Left eyebrow. On the TEST page I get FLCS and NVP errors…don’t know what NVP is. I think I have the setup right as per the manual I went over it 5x checking and re checking switches and the DED information. I’m pretty sure I am doing something wrong but I cant figure it out…this is the first issue iv had that I can’t get past
any help to a newbi(ish) pilot would be great.

TFR involves gobs of time of warmup. I forget the exact modes but you want to be on standby or whatever it’s called for double digit minutes until the text on the MFD changes. Trying to operate TFR before it’s warmed up will throw every error in the book.
TFR limits is almost always too slow. If I remember 360 KCAS and after some time it will auto-disconnect if you wallow in the slows.
NVP, night vision pod? If I remember that’s the part that takes ages to warm up.

Ah thank you for the quick response, The fist time to cold started for the TF mission and the second time I skipped ahead to TAXI (would that effect it?), I’m pretty sure I waited until the NOT TIMED OUT vanished from both the FLIER and TFR. As for the speed the training manual dose indeed state 360kcas but I have tried it 400-550kcas and no effect.

Documentation is only part of the -knowledge factor for advanced systems like LANTIRN. I would recommend you to search youtube for as many TFR vids you can find, and hopefully you’ll figure it out in practice, WITH Reading (and understanding) The Manual first, again and again.
What is missed is an detailed vid for NVP/TFR/FLIR of what-it-is, what-it-does, how-it-works, practically, for the users that are aware of the documentation. On my 2-do list, after finishing a dizen other wip -things…
As for the errors in start up, some are there just for the eye-candy, as happens in real aircraft during systems startup. You can reset these and continue with no probs. The rest errors in flight etc and operation of the system are described in the manuals.

NVP stands for NaVigation Pod, and contains the FLIR camera to generate the MFD/HUD FLIR image and the TFR radar.
In current BMS version the time-in is wrongly configured, it should be 7 minutes as per rl, which prevents in-sim the realistic FLIR boresight in the ground just before take off.
-
The real FLIR timeout period is 7 – 15 minutes, depending on outside temperature.
BMS FLIR timeout is also 7-15 minutes, but random. Maybe one day temperature will replace the random value. -
. As for the speed the training manual dose indeed state 360kcas but I have tried it 400-550kcas and no effect.
You do understand that 360 knots and below will trigger the Low Speed Warning ?( Airspeed scale flashes, LIMITS on HUD and MFD)

Yeap, this is stated in the rl documentation, but the manufacturer has to state so just to be safe. As per my db
in real the image comes at 7 minutes, this was counted in fall & early winder rl missions, so, until a new engine that takes temperature into account for various systems behavior I would recommend to drop the random -logic. Anyway in order to experience 15 minutes time-in the external temp must be -20C.
Similar logic, the max time-in for the real DB-110 pod is 120 minutes, I wouldn’t expect to see such values in a sim, if someday the Recce Pod would be implemented… Except in a new Alaska theater.

That is incorrect. Setting the TFR or FLIR to an operating mode while still in “NOT TIMED OUT”, will have no effect on any system. FLIR and TFR will simply not work until time out period is exhausted.
My bet is that Goldsmack operated a warmed up TFR while still in the chocks or taxing. This will trigger all sorts of cautions and warnings. (Speed warning, clearance warnings, TF FAIL if the radar altimeter is off etc.)Sorry Goldsmack… its pilot error.

As I said. Maybe one day…

In my experience I have to press/release autopilot paddle once on stick, and all of those warnings stop complaining. From the manual there’s a very thorough aftercheck of the system before it becomes thrustworthy
Edit: oh, and don’t forget to check that radar altimeter is turned on

Not if you are on the ground with the TFR in a operational mode, which I believe it is case in this report. You will have to set the TFR to STBY, and then reset the SWIM monitors with the paddle switch or reset the FLCS .

Did u see this, that’s why i assumed rdr standby, coz at least for me it’s never avtivated if joining inflight or taxi

Correct. Activating TFR with Radar altimeter in STBY or OFF will cause problems. Maybe, he is operating the TFR with the Radar altimeter off.

Wow lots of responses and help :D. Thank you everybody I’m going to give it another go today and see if I can figure out where I am going wrong. I have been turning it on in the air as the training manual has stated. As for the Radar Alt…That could be it! I will test today, I don’t think the manual said to turn it on yet I got to there part where your supose to “test” the systems to make sure its working properly.

THAT WAS IT!! Radar Alt was not on!!…I was going to play Falcon 4 later but this problem was bugging me so I fired it up for a test and double checked everything including the rdr alt and it worked!!. Thanks everyone for the quick responses this was really bugging me
