It might be time to look into a Vietnam theater again
-
If this team comes together as envisioned, it will be a “Super Power” theater building team. Able to accomplish theater building in half the normal time!
-
Not to interfere with what Dave is doing I have overlayed PMC Tactical 128 seg theater with simplified, but historical Vietnam War map and cropped (with red box) 64seg out of it. It looks pretty possible to make 64 seg theater and encompass all major war areas in North Vietnam , South ABs and Yankee Station. The center of this theater is @ city of Vinh.

Nice investigation my friend Ted.
Just give it breath ;).

Dave,
It is good to see you my friend. I was getting genuinely worried about you. To the point I was about to look for your old phone number and make sure you’re ok.Keep in touch.

Sorry M8, the RL @ Robert Bosch GmbH is keeping me “pretty busy” ATM!!!..…don’t even want to go into how we are bringing three different systems into alignment.
Lots of man hours are being spent needlessly IMHO…oh well. The “Kid’s” are smarter, at least that’s what they tell me…ROTFLMAO!!!
We will see in a few months though…;)
As far as 'NAM…I like Ted’s idea BUT…we would need some further input from you, as to where the presumed\fictional war’s\scenarios could take place on the MAP???Dave

I broke out my old Vietnam refs but I won’t get to this until Friday night at least, probably more like this weekend. I’ll see what I can come up with.
This is harder than it seems. Ideally we want to include Air Force Phantoms as well, but if I’m not mistaken those guys typically flew out of Thailand and Laos, and refueled before going downtown. Since the AI won’t refuel that’s not going to work from a campaign perspective. That limits us to the Navy and maybe Da Nang unless we fudge some land bases on the west edge of a 64 segment theater. I don’t know if carrier ops are robust enough to go all-blue water ops, although it would simplify campaign building.
I need to spend some time figuring this out.
-
Actually I see you’ve got Udon and Ubon in there, so that would work maybe.
Can a Phantom make it from Udon to Hanoi and back if he’s carrying 3 externals?

No Ted’s got the U’s there……LOL… I’m thinking of bringing the MAP a bit further South.
Also,we can not get “hysterical” here, just will not work with the platform.
As far as the Carrier “Airbase’s”. They work just fine for the AI (at least for GUAM). TIP, place them at 0,0 or 64,64 and the AI will fly 'em BUT they will not show on map. Can do the same for any AB if need be.
As far as the “Diesel Burners”…dunno how they are FM’d in SimData or in the DB anymore. Maybe take a look at what we did in FF to correct those values…Dave

Time for some PIX and further input from the DEV’s.
This is my 80 SEG theater idea.It encompasses most of the “presumed” battle areas in theater. Here is a shot in game (Yeah,Mike……it’s already flying ) of the Vietnam highlands area with Blueprints L2E applied.

Dave, you never cease to amaze me with your talents concerning Falcon 4.0. The 80 segment is sheer genius. Using your map/terrain, I can place F-105 Thunderchief bombers in Thailand. Placing the B-52 in Thailand, as opposed to Guam, would work as a necessary compromise. I can’t necessarily tell, but does your map include Korat RTAF?

If you want my input, the northern border of your theater perhaps to close to Hanoi/Haiphong. Flying & seeing edge of the theater not good and should be rather avoided. But you can test this, since as you say, the theater is “flyable”.
Is 80 seg size any special? I just hope we avoid all those campaign problems for larger than 64 seg theaters. I remember we have just discussed this here.
https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?32-Theater-DiscussionOtherwise very nice and thank you.

If you want my input
NO, we don’t, LOL, just kidding Ted, haha
Yeah, I still think there will be issues for non-64 segment. Guess you’ll have to see.
I suggest the dual approach 64 seg. The war of course had time frames. I say make two theaters, one that encompasses the Northern War and one that has the Southern War(time frames). You wouldn’t have to do much different terrain as they would over lap.
I actually also have a Vietnam theater already setup up that covers the Northern part. Of course it was a WIP. I started it just after BMS was released. I shelved it to move on to something else, then I shelved the something else to move on to another project. THEN I shelved the “another project” cause I got tired of it. THEN I met a beautiful women, AND the rest is history.
I have a Falcon stove here next to my computer. It has 5 burners, 4 back burners and a front one. All 4 back burners are boiling over and the front one is ICE COLD……:D

All input is welcome, even yours Brian……LOL!!! That is the only way community mod’s may get accomplished.
The 80 SEG is an experimental approach and would require constant support from my end to sustain it to completion. Don’t have the time ATM. Just threw it out there thinking someone would grasp the “Sandbox” map approach. Soooooooooooo……Here is 'NAM in 64 SEG with a “hysterical” map overlay:
I can go a little farther north if a 100 mile flyout over Hanoi is not enuff’.
This WIP will be available for Download soon. Give me an hour or two.

Things are getting very interesting. Geez, a guy can’t take even a small break from this place anymore without one sort of craziness or another!

Dave, have you ever take a brake or you want make the rest of us small devs feel uncomfortable?
Your friend Nikos. -
OKIE DOKEY!!! The Developers copy is available here:
http://www.adrive.com/public/ntZsd3/Add-On%20NAM.7z
NOTES!!!
As I have been a bit lazy in the past, here are the install instructions:
1. Extract the zip to your desktop.
2. Copy and past the ADD-ON NAM to your ?:\Falcon BMS 4.32\Data folder. Where ? equals your drive letter
3. Open your ?:\Falcon BMS 4.32\Data\Terrdata\theaterdefinition\theater.lst file with Notepad and add this line
Add-On NAM\Terrdata\theaterdefinition\NAM.tdf
to the bottom of the list, Save and close.
4. Open BMS and select theaters and you should see NAMALPHA in the list.Select it and exit, I guess, I have not a had a problem with the Theater Switcher code since 4.32. (ghost’s…LOL!)
5. Go fly Instant Action to get an idea of what’s to come
6. IMPORTANT!!! E-Mail me your PIN # so I can access your bank account…Just Kidding!!!Developer Notes!!!
This is a standard 64 SEG build for Falcon. It includes some rudimentary elements just to get it “flying” in BMS.It is up to others to polish it.
Finer points:
1. The tiles were built in TerrainView, just to give us\Ted an idea as to how the Coast is situated…;) There is a BLANK texture folder included to build on if you wish.
2. I only included NAMED objectives for now…all NONAMES have been excluded. As well, further work need’s to be done i.e. remove Airstrips. This will further reduce your objective count. As it is now we are at 2500+…
3. UI work is just enuff’ to get started
4. Could not get China dnnet.e00 So we have no rivers\lakes for that area…not worried ATM 'cause I think I have some ARCInfo that I can convert.
5. I have the NAM files that I made for this Theater i.e. the MyData.hdr…etc that I will upload if needed.tired Demer
Have FUN!!!

Dave:
If you are ok with it, I have a Vietnam template that I can incorporate into your Vietnam Alpha. It has some UI work that would look good in your alpha setup.
