Falcon crash after adjusting graphics
-
I just reinstalled Falcon BMS after taking a couple years off. I got everything working and I flew around a bit but the cockpick graphics were bad, went to setup and changed the graphics to 1980xwhatever from 1440xwhatever. Now I can get into the game and go through the menus normally but when I try to get into the 3D world the game crashes. It also completely freezes when I hit the “preview” box in the graphics setup menu. I’m no computer whiz and just getting the game running is a small victory for me, I know there is a crash log but I’m not sure where it’s located and I don’t know how to read it. Graphics card Nvidea 570, windows 10.
Thanks for any help guys!

Try deleting x:\Falcon BMS 4.33 U1\User\Config\dx9display.dsp and go set up the graphics options in Falcon BMS again. It will re-create the file when you start.
-
Well that didn’t really work and after messing around a little more the game wouldn’t even load at all so I reinstalled and adjusted the graphics again and everything is fine. Makes me think that it wasn’t the graphics in the first place… I have to redo all the stick and key settings again and hopefully everything stay how it’s working now. Thanks though!
-
Well this is frustrating, I am having the same problems again after adjusting the stick and key settings. Doesn’t make any sense to me.
-
I believe i found the crash log. This is what the top part said, there was a lot more to copy and paste but this looked like the most important part. It’s all jibberish to me.

I really screwed the pooch now. I uninstalled a second time and must have done it wrong. When I try to reinstall, right after I click the setup it tells me:
“the registry entry points to a folder that does not contain a valid Falcon BMS 4.33 install. Please restore the missing files or remove the registry entry (HKLM\SOFTWARE\Benchmark Sims\Falcon BMS 4.33) to be able to install the product again. Path: C:\Falcon BMS 4.33”
#&*$@&# computers raise my blood pressure too much…
I tried finding the (HKLM\SOFTWARE\Benchmark Sims\Falcon BMS 4.33) but can’t locate it. I even tried a system restore and it did nothing, then I deleted everything Falcon except the original Falcon.exe and redownloaded it and it keeps saying the same thing, I can’t even reinstall now.

Thanks for that link, it seems like it was made to cure the problem I am having but it hasn’t worked.
Edit: Spectacular, after reading through that thread agave sent me I was able to find the file in RegEdit and delete it. Im in the middle of reinstall right now. I freed up some disk space because my computer was a little full, doubtful but hopefully that will help with the game crash after adjusting the stick and key map.
-
Game is running but still crashing trying to enter 3D world. All I did was adjust the graphics settings this time and it started crashing again, no adjustments made to the keys.
-
“Adjust graphic setting” really doesn’t tell us much
Nor have you posted your system specs, unless I missed them.
A 1 GB card may be a little weak….
Can you run the Falcon config program and try disabling shaders? -
I believe I have narrowed it down to crashing after I have set targets in the 2d world in the DTC. I go to campaign and designate and save different SAM radars as set points for my GBUs, I have made one adjustment at a time and have no problems currently but I haven’t played with the DTC after my most recent install.
I’ve got Nvidea 570 graphics card, windows 10 and a 250GB solid state hard drive, which i just cleared 11GB out of it. I’m pretty sure its the DTC that was messing me up.
-
I’ve figured out its the Data Transfer Cartridge that was screwing me up. I was setting targets the old way by designating targets as a waypoint then saving it in the DTC, I have been flying fine and done a little target designation without the DTC and things seem ok.
-
Now I have to reinstall again…. I was designating targets without saving them in the DTC and it still crashed. Basically I was making WPT 15 barlock B, WPT 16 square pair, WPT 17 spoon rest etc… Does setting targets to a WPT screw everything up if there is no WPT set in the flight plan? And why the heck does it ruin the game? I can’t even get into instant action or dogfight after setting these WPTs??? Just 3D crash, even though I didn’t save anything once they were set…

…. Does setting targets to a WPT screw everything up if there is no WPT set in the flight plan? And why the heck does it ruin the game? …
No, not at all. As a matter of fact what you’re doing - putting pre-planned threat points on a map and assigning a target/steer number but NOT saving them - is the same as doing nothing at all. If they are not saved, they are not ‘set’.
…. I can’t even get into instant action or dogfight after setting these WPTs??? Just 3D crash, even though I didn’t save anything once they were set…
I think you have some other issue. A corrupt file or something. Confirm NO mods or add-ons, what theater, and whether you are copying/retaining ANY old files (logbook, config files, etc.).
….
Can you run the Falcon config program and try disabling shaders? Also, have you followed the previous advice and opened the launch Configuration menu and reduced graphic settings, especially shaders and shadows? Also, disable the intro movie if you haven’t already.
-
Looks like another -window on the shortcut case.

Everything is bone stock 4.33 playing in the Korean theater, no profiles or anything saved. I can fly and have flown a bit but once I try to set targets as WPTs its done, EXCEPT in the LGB training mission where I set the “yellow crane” as my #7 WPT without saving in the DTC and i hit the yellow crane.
I haven’t done anything with the configuration settings since my first install, my graphics card should have no problem with this game, I adjust it to 1980x1080 w/ multisampling set to quality 3 or 4 and things run smooth and look great. I flew a bit in instant action and LGB training just to find out what the keys are and get my bearings for all the new stuff. I have flown in campaign with no problems until I mess with the pre planning set points.
I’ve been helping out at a horse show down the road and have been running back and forth, haven’t had much time for messing around with this today. Later tonight I will hit it hard and try to get this solved.
Would a full crash log be of any value?
-
Donchyaknow, I went into the configuration and shut off the intro movie and the fresh install has been working. I’ve adjusted the graphics and set WPTs, example: I set ground attack WPT 6 on a square pair and launched the game no problem then discarded mission and went and set WPT 6 on same square pair then set WPT 24 on barlock B then saved in the DTC and the game lauched fine. I haven’t remaped my keys and stick yet but I’ve got to run and I don’t think that was the cause of the issues in the first place.
Thanks for the help guys! The Migs are gonna be hurting.
-
I just remapped the keys and put 6 different radars into the pre planning thing and CRASH! Unfortunately it was the game that crashed and not my plane. Reinstall time.
Edit: I’m about to pump my computer full of .45 ammo. After my 6th or 7th reinstall I got the DTC to work correctly, I flew and destroyed a SAM site. I went to the next mission, cleared the DTC and selected new targets then crash…… I deleted x:\Falcon BMS 4.33 U1\User\Config\dx9display.dsp then redid my graphics and recleared the DTC then tried to fly with an empty DTC and crash. Then I deleted x:\Falcon BMS 4.33 U1\User\Config\dx9display.dsp again and tried to fly in instant action without adjusting the graphics and crash.

If this actually means anything I hope it helps.

So, do you have both 4.33 & 4.33 U1 installed on your system?
Indications are yes.
Because you say “Then I deleted x:\Falcon BMS 4.33 U1\User\Config\dx9display.dsp”
and your crashlog says “‘C:\Falcon BMS 4.33\Bin\x64\Falcon BMS.exe’, run by Matt.”
Note the difference in the underlined parts?
It might be a good idea to UNINSTALL 4.33
