      Hi

      I would like to know what is the maximum range a VORTAC can send its signal. Yesterday, after a refueling, I tried to get back to the alternate airfield, and set the TACAN number corresponding to this airfield, but I just got signal from the VORTAC when I was 70 Nm out the airfield. I took the right direction because I knew the alternate airfield was set as one of my steer points, so I headed to this steer point, And when I got close, TACAN became active.
      What if I had my flight plan broken, so I didn´t have directions on how to get near to the airfield? How would I localize myself in the space, to know the right direction to follow?
      In DCS, TACAN works for long distance (may be A-10C avionics are better?)

          Depends on altitude.

          D = 1.23√H (in ft)

          D = Distance in Nm
          H = Height in ft

          Usually IRL, you can receive it up to 150 - 200+ Nm …

            In BMS Korea, there are two types of navaids: the enroute and the terminals.
            The enroute have longer range (150-200Nm), the terminals have shorter range (40-70Nm)
            Use enroute to navigate Korea wide, use terminal to approach an airbase

            The difference can be pinpointed on the interactive map:
            http://www.ravico.com/ST/BMS_KOREA_interactive/index.html
            subdued tacans are terminals, the others are enroute. you can also see the difference on the hi level map, the enroute are the ones at the airways intersections
            http://www.ravico.com/ST/BMS_KOREA_interactive/index2.html

            Before I hear moaning, please understand there is a huge difference between a theoric (power) range of a navaid station and the reading you can get in the reality depending of terrain, elevation, slant range, navaid maintenances etc etc etc
            The BMS code is unable to fully implement the reality, therefore compromises were always required the above is the best compromises possible, IMHO.

              In the past, ranges were used to be rather low compared to RL, but now, it is way way way better than before and fit with what we can see most of the time IRL.

              All thanks to Mav-Jp and Red Dog works … 🙂

              Note also that LOS (earth curve, maybe mountain also (?) but I do not remember exactly sorry.) is implemented. You will receive the TACAN at further distance with height increasing.

                  What I do in that case is to read the actual geographical coordinates at the DED, hit alt/tab, go to the Korea map and there, searching the latitude and longitude ( only degrees are shown) intersection you can roughly determinate your position and so, the nearest field or airstrip to go
