Newbie Show, the sequel! Campaign madness
-
First 3 attempts at flying a sweep mission (Yep I only know how to use a-a missiles and ccip bombing, but had to start a campaign) resulted in the following:
1. Explosion on takeoff, lol, managed to eject. Nothing to see here folks, just a newbie trying to fly an F-16 in a war. Must have pulled up too hard as I took off.
2. Took over in mid flight, 8 Sams fired at me, dodged 7.:p
3. Tried another sweep mission, and immediately after take off I lost my fellow planes, dunno where they went. I was following the steer points. Then we got an order that bandits were in the area. I didnāt know how to translate the information that I got from the AWACS to knowing where the heck to go. Then I got shot down by SAMS again. :mad:The eject button works very well Nice parachute too!
So here are my questions (I know Iām doing everything wrong here)
1. How do I stay with my other aircraft? How do I find them if I lose them? There are so many contacts on the radar and the TWS that its hard to know who is part of my flight.
2. When the awacs give positions about enemy bandits, how do I use that info to know where to go?
3. Should I be higher to avoid those SAMs? Each time was around 23,000 feet or so.Thanks guys.

Good day, Scotters,
- use the datalink
- do a forum search for Bullseye print out. That should help.
- 23 k sounds like a good altitude. What kind of SAMs are we talking about? SA-10ās are nasty. For them, a desired altitude is about 10 feet!
BTW, which campaign are you flying?
-
Turn off the bullseye radio call in the main menu, it confused the life out of me and still does so I turned it off, now when I get calls for bandits, I know where they are without all the hassle of trying to work it out. Should help with finding the bad guys
-
Drtbjk, I thought it said SA-2s, but Iām not sure. I was flying the first Korean campaign, where the Allies invade North Korea. Things started good, then some idiot kept getting the F-16s destroyed.
Mastersetter, thanks for the advice on the bullseye, that should help me a lot for now.

HAHAHA, thatās TRUE!!!

4th attempt flying again a air superiority mission. Jumped in when they were at the 2nd steer point. After about 15 minutes or so we ran into SA-2s, which all missed, but I climbed to about 35,000 ft. Then 5 minutes later ran into some mig 29s, fire 2 missiles at em, probably I was too far. As my threat warning system rang, I fired off some countermeasures and flares, then went back looking for the migs, and saw an m on the warning system radar coming for me. I thought, that canāt be a missile, nothing in this game is that obvious or simple. Then the missile hit, and I ejected again!
4 for 4 on the ejections so far.
Truth be told, I love this game, and this first campaign is like a vicious pretest that is showing me everything that I donāt know.

About following other F16, flying as a wingman can be a pain with AI. You might enjoy the game way more as a flight leader.
As for the SAMs and MiGs, your situational awareness will improve. Good advice up there. For SA-10, you will only read 10 on your RWR, there will be no missile warning. And actually youāre not supposed to be dodging missiles all night long, the campaign AI throws you in danger in the beginning when it should set more DEAD missions.

Scotters,
I like your attitude, and think how great youāll do in the campaign when you run them out of missiles
I had discovered I was very weak in formation flying, and Lorik is right about the AI as Lead doing strange things at times. Joining a VFW and flying with people is best. I am a proud member of the 20th WFW. They are great guys, and very patient. As soon as I get a little stronger on formation flying Iāll be back flying with them(I donāt want to inconvenience them until Iām a bit more comfortable)). Iāve also been practicing doing the AAR mission and formating on the tanker. Another thing Iām going to start doing is after target(when Iām Lead), is to give the wingie the lead and tell him to RTB. That will give the advantage that the AI will fly a straight path, and will be( I think) good formation practice.
You had mentioned bullseye issues. One trick that has helped me is during briefing, beware of where Bullseye is. Iām not saying to memorize the map, just develop a general āsense of directionā like you would with a compass direction. When you look at a map, you have a general sense of NSEW, right? Do the same with Bullseye. Get just enough of a mental image of the briefing map so that when AWACS says ā100 for 20 milesā or whatever you have a general sense of where that is in relation to the flight path. If you can get yourself in the ballpark, the Bulls date on FCR and HSD when get you on the spot. -
Guys thanks for all the advice.
One more question on the RWR. What does H stand for? Hospitality center?

Scooter,
I appreciate your postthat was me at the beginning!!
One thing that helped me a lot was to follow the training missions beginning with ground operations. I will not go to the next one until I had mastered the previous one by heart. (They kind of build on each other).
I also keep all of my BMS reading material on dropbox so I can read them wherever I go weather I am on my iPad or my iPhone. You could do the same even if you have android.
I also watch the training videos on YouTube. The most prolific ones are from Krause. Also watch videos made by: Callsign Fluffer, Burner Tactical, Cutterject250, Dee-Jay, Frosty Aviator, Gerry Abbott, Revientor (Spanish), Supanova, Tim Morgan.
Donāt give up brother!!!
One final thing, I joined a virtual squadron online. They meet all the time and there is always willing to help.

Hey Pikachu, Iām so nuts that when I started to get into this I had all the manuals printed out at Lulu when there was a sale. I appreciate your advice, and that is what Iām doing now, first learning how to use free fall bombs and then going from there in the training missions. I too like to use the videos, so sometimes I will watch a video on my cell phone as I do a training mission. Its fun. Thanks for all help and advice.
And Lorik, now I know why I keep losing my wingmen! They are all chasing the pokemons!

Funny that you say this! I didnāt realise that Pokemon fad was on again!
Iāve had my callsign since back in '98 when Falcon 4 came out and my son was about 5.
Since then Iāve always kept it! I even put it on the tail of my training F16.
Iāll post a pic when I get home today.
Nice Pika
