TGP camera control question
-
Hello folks,
Got another stupid question- is there a NON tracking mode for the TGP camera ?Here’s what I was trying to do : I need to set the camera to a fixxed FOV ahead of the aircraft and slightly down as I have to bomb an enemy runway at night, lights and radar are OFF as it’s a high risk area with multiple AA guns and am using CCIP for the Durandals because the airport is a target of opportunity. Going in at treetop level in the dark is dangerous enough but I’m trying to do it without any RF emissions if possible. I can’t get the camera to stop tracking the CCIP pipper, it it even possible ? I cannot get the camera into SP mode with the radar off (no TFR).

Thats what LANTIRN is for. Related, you shouldn’t be heads down under a 1000 feet AGL.

Set the end of the runway (at the threshold) as a precision target steerpoint. Set your HSI course to that runway heading. Switch to your pre-set steerpoint and use the HSI to turn on to runway heading.
TGP should slave to the steerpoint (i.e. the runway threshold) and you can fly (mostly) the steering caret/cue in the HUD to the runway.

<edit>disregard- TGP is wrong gear for my mission. RTFM. *headdesk</edit>

Yes, there is a non tracking mode for the TGP. Put it in AA and follow it up with a TMS down. You should have the TGP pointed about 3 degrees below the gun cross, IIRC.
If you want to fly low level missions, you might consider an aircraft which is equipped with FLIR, or simply NVGs. Either should be sufficient for a zero emissions mission profile.

I’ll try that, but wouldn’t it revert to it’s previous behavior when I go back the AG mode ?

In 4.33, I believe so, yes. Hence my other, repeated, specific suggestions. Using the TGP below a thousand feet AGL is not just a bad idea.

Understood.
re-reading the LANTIRN doc would indicate my problem is carrying the TGP at all. I didn’t realize the TGP camera and the NAV pod camera weren’t slaved together, and I’m fighting the TGP camera. Thanks for the bitch-slap.

OMG, the F-16c-M50 isn’t fully LANTIRN capable ? The targeting pod camera works, but there’s NO FLIR camera on the NAV pod at all. How can that be, if the NAV pod is loaded, how can the camera NOT be usable ?
-
Two different pods. The F-16CM-50 carries the Sniper XR ATP, not the LANTIRN TGP.
You will want to fly a non CM aircraft, such as an F-16CG-42 for instance. In short any jet that carries LANTIRN instead of Sniper.
And because Im a broken record…
@AFI11-2F-16V3:
3.31. Targeting Pod Operations. Do not use the TGP for anything other than navigational SA
below 1000’ AGL (e.g. VID or aircraft, designation for weapons deliver). -

I get that, but I haven’t found an equipment or capability list in the docs for the CM A/C, and am a little confused why they would remove the pod type identifiers from the loadout screen, I had no idea till you told me that I’ve been using the sniper all this time. I mean seriously- why would the default ‘general’ duty A/C in the default campaign be so gimped when the ‘A-A’ specialist squadrons A/C have the ability to use the FLIR camera from the NAV pod, it doesn’t require the TGP at all.
https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?24255-Dash-34-feedback-on-the-LANTIRNSorry, I’m venting because I’m extremely confused. It just doesn’t make sense to me. Is the CM-50 carrying a different NAV pod than the AAQ-13 ?
-
I don’t think CM 50s carry any nav pod cause low level isn’t really their (or anyone’s these days) thing. They want their HTS pod instead.

A shame. I hate to abandon my current campaign because the pod loaded isn’t being used fully by this particular model, and isn’t supportive of the way I like to fly. I just hate to select the dedicated A-A squadron that does have the A/C capable of using the NAV pod to it’s fullest, and go rogue and make up my own missions while wingman is flying high cover.
*shrug

so yeah, as above, the CM isnt carrying LANTIRN at all, so no AAQ-13, no AAQ-14, just the AAQ-33. To my knowledge the pod type has never been identified on the loadout screen, but from the thread you linked, that feature may be coming soon, perhaps in a world, three to four weeks from now.
For what its worth, you should have been able to see that your wingman had the Sniper equipped during your ramp start. It is quite visually distinct from the LANTIRN.

My last extensive experience with F4 was under SP2, so I couldn’t tell the diff between a sniper and a spare tire. They also didn’t have CM’s in that build either. Thanks for the HU on a possible feature inclusion date.

Lest you be much disappointed three to four weeks from now, I should point out that its a recurring joke that any and all improvements are three to four falcon weeks away - the length of a falcon week being rather indeterminate and subject to change. A bit of a play on developers having an update coming out three to four weeks away… and three weeks later, its still three to four weeks away. Ad nauseum.

…for my own reference in the future.

If it’s any consolation I removed my pilot in the campaign to a different squadron that fly’s the KF-16c-32 and found the magic I’ve been missing. Problem is, the unit is so far out in the sticks that the enemy can’t even find me. The old blk 32 has it’s quirks but it’s a whole lot less a video game object than the CM50 was.
Now once I’m up to speed on campaign editing and can get a C32 or CM42 to replace a frontline 50/52 unit I’ll be golden.

Yes, this is possible to do. What you need to do is take a HUD (preferably a HMCS) mark near the location you want the TGP to look. To take a HMCS mark:
1. MARK [ICP 7] until HUD
2. TMS FWD & HOLD, look where you want to place the mark and release
3. TMS FWD one more time
4. M-SEL [ICP 0] to make it your STPT
5. CZ to remove the slews
6. Your TGP is now looking at this point -> Can now refine it with a TGP MARK.However, 1,000’ at night is very low to have your nugget down in the TGP. We’ve killed a lot of dudes this way. Additionally, at the low graze angle you’re not going to see much in the TGP and at night it’s going to be awfully difficult to take a HMCS mark unless it’s well lit.

Can we do a HMCS mark in BMS?
