Why does the Maverick LOS Circle in HUD not line up with the WPN display crosshairs?
-
I understand boresighting but in BORE and VIS mode, I noticed the Maverick LOS circle in the HUD never lines up (coincides) with the cross hairs in the WPN display. The Mavericks always hit the target locked up in the WPN display crosshairs, not what’s in the Maverick HUD LOS circle. I’m kind of confused. I thought the WPN display crosshair = the missile seeker head = the HUD Maverick LOS circle. Obviously I’m missing something here.

You need to boresight the maverick by the sounds of things.
The maverick mounting procedure introduces a variable alignment of the missile seeker with the aircraft boresight line. So, you need to boresight it, to determine the relationship accurately. The WPN display shows you where the missile seeker is looking. The crosshair shows you exactly where in relation to dead ahead on the missile that view is. The VIS circle in the HUD shows you where the MMC thinks that view is in relation to the aircraft axes. Unless you have performed a boresight, it probably is not accurate.
You dont need to perform a boresight to use the missile, but you do if you want the HUD circle to line up with the WPN video. You can just use the WPN video if you like.
Been a couple other threads on the subject recently. Search might turn up some more detail on it.

Thanks. That makes sense in that it’s consistent with the misalignment/boresighting issue. I’ll try boresighting the Mavs and then use VIS/BORE and see if they line up.
Update: Tested and yes, boresighting the Mavs lines up all three symbols:
a) VIS Mode - WPN crosshairs, HUD Mav LOS, HUD TD box
b) BORE Mode - WPN crosshairs, HUD Mav LOS, Cross (E-O Reticle at Armament Datum Line)
