When I wasn’t looking my home airfield was attacked and they destroyed a little radar.

Aside from that, everything else is completely intact. Or so I thought. When I went to take off for a routine mission in 3D, I noticed this crazy brown mass on the runway. I saw the AI planes take off in front of me no problem by just clipping through it, but as soon I tried the same I instantly exploded when I got near.

What can I do about this? If the runway had a huge crater in it preventing planes from taking off, then it should say so in the recon screen and prevent flights from taking off. If that were the case, and the runway were just repaired in some hours then I wouldn’t have an issue, but the AI planes can take off just fine and according to the game there’s no issue.

Except, there definitely is one, because I can’t take off without exploding when I get near what I later found out was a crater.

So is this just normal thing that happens? Does it go away after a while?

Like I said, I have no problem with the runway being cratered and useless, but the game doesn’t indicate that anywhere and still assumes I can just clip through the thing, allows flights, and the AI just go through it.

Edit: You can take off from the taxiway if you want to. I’ll never tell!

I noticed that at 2200 the craters were gone, which is about 6 hours after those screenshots were taken. I’d rather just wait it out than trying to game the system, and I’d appreciate straight answers as to whether it’s just some weird BMS quirk that I’ll have to live with or if there’s any more info I should know about how and why these things happen.

Snide remarks aren’t helpful or endearing.

On a more serious note, you can actually drive around the blast pattern (in the grass, on the right side) and still take off from the correct side of the runway. Or take the entrance/exit on the other side of the HAS and do a back taxi.

Just funnin’ around. I type slow and didn’t get the rest out quick enough. You will have to forgive my sense of humor as I am not good at making excuses.

                    FWIW…here is my best guess.

The “kill box” for the runway is the particular spot on the runway that you see in the recon screen when that section of runway is selected. For the runway to show damaged or destroyed in the recon screen, this part has to be hit. In your case, the radar was close enough to the runway, that the bomb that hit it caused damage to a part of the runway that is not in the specific area to register damage or destruction. Not really a bug. Just a rare case.

Thanks, that’s exactly what I was looking for. I know how old Falcon is, so I’m not surprised that weird stuff like this happens, but I like to know the how and why so that I can at least be prepared when it happens and possibly prevent these weird issues.

Looks like I just got unlucky. Now that I know I can just wait it out I think I’ll do that.

Sorry for being so “no fun allowed”. I wasn’t in the best of moods at the time, and earlier in the day I had searched for other people with a similar problem whose threads were full of completely unhelpful joke responses and nothing more. I wasn’t happy with the idea of the same thing happening again.

This makes me wonder though, if I am doing a runway attack mission, does that mean I need to hit a specific part of the runway in order for it to count? If I hit I’m between the “sweet spots” so to speak, but still drop bombs onto the runway, does it not do damage?

When you Recon a runway it will show up as several segments. These are the places, usually 3-4 per runway, you’d want to hit to have it count for “damaged.” I’m guessing this crater wasn’t in one of those zones for your base so it didn’t show up as damaged (and that’s why AI was able to take off). Practically, you want to try to hit where the taxiways enter the runway as these hits are most likely to fully disable the base.

Simple , bring engineers to fix it , maybe they’ll fix L2 terrain too

it would help which airbase is that in what theatre 😉

Actually it is not the runway destroyed at all but a crater next to it and is an old trick we used in the past to take out a opponents runway/taxiways (pvp) when we didn’t have any Dardanelles.

Engineers don’t work. you just have to wait it out, can’t remember how long.

                              Oh, well then, very witty…
I guess auto repair is about 2-3 falcon hours, maybe more/less. I’m not quite familiar with that function, tho it reminds me it did exist something similar in cfg , autorepairbridges … or something like that.

In AF there was no autorepair on by default , or at all?, engineers or bust. have that time table somewhere, for bridges sections too, for AF, more sections more hours.
So it was quite foolish to cut yourself way of advance just to block opponent(computer) in the first wave. Was merely like chess tactics, bit more microm. for ATO.

                              …Durdunalles 😄

I know , I was just mentioning that it was similar situation with bridges in AF campaign against computer, but just similar , this is an exploit, there was a feature. Anyways, thanks for the tip 😉

                                    Hey,

What you see in this example is a bomb which has just missed the runway. You didn’t see this happening before as the craters where not working as they should.
This has been fixed and now a crater is shown depending on the bomb size. It does not matter if the bomb has hit an object or not.
So also in the middle of a field you will see a crater.

As already mentioned in previous posts, these will be removed in time.
But if you want to cheat a little…
Open the mission in MC and go to the “Persistant Object” tab. Here you will find all the craters in the mission.
You can clear all or look for the one you want to remove.

Ha, thanks. Tho, it would be kinda difficult to edit this on the fly in online PvP, still good to know for offline.

What I would really like to see is that lazy engineers doing their job once not lying around in shades with beer cans in their hands…

Anyways thanks for fixing this ‘exploit’.
