Hello, i already own warthog stick and hotas, pedals, and tir 5. Problem is all the abovementioned stuff are great for a semi/permanent rig. My wife just declared war to my simhobby focussing on my sim gear, ence the need to find a compact version of my rig without loosing to much in terms of flying experience (i play dcs helis and a 10c and im learning the ropes of bms 4.33)
Any advice will be very apreciated!

Rather than changing the hardware, find a compact room where you can use them without your wife’s wrath
Or tell her than a sane hobby is better than going out to pubs with friends. at least you’re around when she needs you

        🙂
        Good luck

A good talk with the Mrs. and a desktop solution come to mind… but it all depends on available space. Do you have a pic of your current setup?

What is “She Who Must Be Obeyed” complaining about? If its the HOTAS etc occupying the desk then get a Powered USB Hub ans set up your controls through this. When finished disconnect the HOTAS etc and put away someplace. So long as you connect the controls into the same ports on the hub then you should have no issues with control order etc and be up a flying with little prep time.

Alternatively if your misses sews get her involved by asking her to make you something like this.

Makes the sticks look nicer. Or maybe get her flying too …

My wife has learned that there are greater evils than my hobby… namely a few friends whose relationships broke down due to their husbands/boyfriends using their “hobby” (basketball) as an excuse to, um, basically play with different balls. At least with THIS hobby, every Paypal purchase comes with an email receipt and sometimes a nice little delivery after a day or so. At least with THIS hobby, she knows EXACTLY where I am and EXACTLY what I’m doing. With 5 screens, it’s difficult to miss 🙂

As for the OP, there have been others that have build their rigs that can fold away into an ottoman or can be rolled into a cabinet. One guy had a small room, like a cupboard-under-the-stairs type, and had his setup there. I don’t think it was wide enough for a 3-screen setup! A few other simmers have modified their tables so that the HOTAS can tuck away underneath or into the table when not in use.

BTW, all great advises here! 🙂

If nothing gives, why limit yourself. Time to find Wife 2.0.:razz:

On a slightly more serious note, it would be good to show us your current setup and how it ‘limits’ her. Is she using the computer as well? What kind of work is she doing on it? If she uses it as a casual user (i.e. Facebook, Skype, websurfing), I would get her iPad. In addition, it also depends on your room constraints. If that’s not an issue, think about setting up your ‘workstation’ and hers.

Try building one of these -

Plans at the bottom of the page.

Thank you guys, great advices! I can easily put away and ‘‘hide’’ stick and hotas and tir , while i have no place to hide the rudder pedals… that’s why i start thinking about a twist stick (z axis i mean), my idea is keep the warthog hotas and look for a good stick with rudder.
Searching the web i found mixed up reviews over saitek sticks, and sparse info over Vkb sticks, no idea about other solutions.

And thats why i hardly fly .
Wives are great but they dont mix with sims (generally speaking ofcorse)
They will never get this hobby just like i will never get the need to clean the house every 3 days

Well that’s where you got it wrong , with all due respect 🙂
Do clean the house with her every week (we do it once a week) and i’m quite sure she will let you enjoy any hobby you want 🙂
                          it works for me 🙂
Some smarter than me will hire a maid, but i’m telling you it’s not going to work. It’s all a question of sharing. If you share workload, she will share in return and let you hobby

                          diavolaccio,
here’s maybe a solution for you if you really need to get rid of your rudder. Don’t replace your Hotas with a twist cheap joystick.
Just discard the rudder, stow it away and program the rudder left and right on the radioswitch of the throttle for instance (any button that suits you will work)
let’s face it, you don’t really need a rudder often in flight; so it’s not like a rudder is used extensively in BMS except on the ground. so if you can live with that compromise you can keep your hi quality Hotas

There’s always roll linked nws. No less realistic than a twist stick in the viper 🙂

Appeasing She Who Must Be Obeyed is an essential part of life and helps with the positive flow of energy around the house. That, or return to being single. Personally, I like having my meals delivered in-flight 🙂

As for the rudder, it will be UNDER your desk so not much point in hiding it, unless you spray-painted it some neon pink or something. Saitek Pro Flights should be enough for BMS work.

                                Wives are great

                                Sorry, lost me there.

                                no idea about other solutions.

I got tired of having my pedals under the desk and finding somewhere to put them when not flying so I’ve been flying without pedals entirely. Couple the rudder to the stick when there is weight on wheels so you can turn on the ground. This is obviously removing the ability to actually apply rudder in flight, but honestly I haven’t missed it at all in the F-16. Other aircraft are different and might need a rudder. But when flying the Viper it’s fine, at least for me.

I see a few others have made the same suggestions, so…

                                +1

Rudders are required IMHO, especially here…

still wandering what the space the rudder is using now would be used for when the rudder is gone…

But… what if you would attach it to a wall that might be (and probably is) behind your desk?
Just a ledge or a couple of screws would do…

I do something like this…I built a desk from a tubular keyboard stand, and I have a treadle bar underneath the desk that I have my Saitek pedals attached to. I have to lift my feet off the floor to put them on the pedals, otherwise the pedals are simply out of the way but always in place.
