So my grandfather was a fighter pilot and flew p51’s and meteors, he later became an airline pilot and flew some regional turboprops… and now he started trying to learn BMS with me since he can no longer fly…
The main issue? his eyesight isn’t what it used to be, he can’t read the info on the HUD unless he zooms in so much that the HUD about fills the screen (i have a 1280x1024 monitor, a very old one…), so the question is can anyone make some kind of mod that would help with that and can be easly activated/deactivated? i have tried changeing the color of the HUD and while it does help a lot, it’s not enougth…
Also we will later encounter problems on the MFD’s and stuff and will probebly need the same type of help so if someone could also help with that it’ll be great.
Thanks a lot for all who try to help! it is greatly appriciated!! -
Best thing IMHO is to buy a TrackIR and zoom to fit your requests.
Best of luck -
You can also set up the HUD on one of the MFDs so you have a better contrast, green on black
-
What about getting him a pair of glasses optimized for his head-to-screen distance …. a pair of ‘computer glasses’.
??
It’s helped me a lot, but I think my eyes aren’t quite as old as your granddads.

ff6 had a cheat that showed mfds in hud only view. this kind of mod mixed with track ir would probably work best. but i have never seen it in bms. i think it worked in easy mode only. i wonder if its in bms code but not used. track ir can be set to zoom as much as you want with a tiny bit of head movement. once he gets used to it, the head movements will become natural reflex. edit: i just checked. that mfd in 1 view didnt work.

well i do have free track, but i think if anything it’s better to use an axis on the joystick cuz it’s innacurate. it’s a problem for him thougth, he’s haveing a tougth time getting used to all the battons and stuff, and yes track IR is a problem for him too… but i guess we’ll have to keep trying… i will try to test some stuff that you guys suggested, but i don’t think any of these will be nearly as good as enlarged text on the HUD and MFDS, so if it’s possioble i’d love to see that happen, i’m sure there are others out there who want it too…
thanks a lot for everyone who responded so quickly -
Im still getting used to all the buttons and stuff LOL
-
Yeah he’s not alone there! I don’t know but maybe extraction/YAME multi monitor setup can help.
-
My suggestion is the same as those who said about Track IR or Free track, set the zoom to the Z axis and get used of that, pretty good.

This should do it…

i’d love to know how to use that becuse until i get enlarged text this seems like the best option… he’s not gonna get used to track ir quickly and he’s not gonna buy a pair of glasses just to play once a week or so…

With an extra monitor the mfd
s and other information can be as large as you require within the available space. A 2nd hand 15 or 17" would be fine. Having the Hud to one side of the action would be awkward but if the main screen, seat height, aux screen/screens could be positioned well then might be the solution. People are giving away older/smaller screens so investment to try out could be minimal. Obviously suitable outputs from video card needed. I own trackir and I hate it/don
t use it.I think there MAY be way to increase font size but not aware how. Keep asking.
Also that 4 mfd suggestion might help. -
well the 4 mfd thing is defently cool but the other screen option is a no go for me atm… we’ll test the trackir opion when we can, but i still hope for a diffrent HUD font size…

(i have a 1280x1024 monitor, a very old one…)
How about upgrading the monitor to a larger tft or tv? A 32" Full-HD TV would help your grandpa because the HUD would be bigger on the tv than on your old screen.
If your computer has enough power a 27" 2560x1440 monitor could be an option too. Both options that I’ve mentioned don’t cost a fortune anymore. -
12801024 seems not high res enough to read HUD. I recommend 19201080 or above, also buy an as large monitor as possible.
-
when read the HUD is needed use the view nº1 only hud view, or just zoom in the MFDs when needed.
you can try also, the next code:
// font settings for displays
hudfont 4;
hudwarnfont 6;
mfdfont 7;
dedfont 10;
pflfont 10;
rwrfont 11;
hmsfont 13;is in the files
C:\…\Falcon BMS 4.36\Data\Art\ckptart\3dckpit.datadd +1 to each number, that will increase the font, there is only 2 fonts available, the default and +1
you will have to do the +1 thing in all subfolders, in all the 3dckpit.dat files

Hey bud, I have a very similar story to yours, my grandpa also flew the P-51 and other types, mainly the F-86 and F-84G. Now he’s 87 and has macular degeneration in both eyes, so nothing can help him see numbers and letters on a screen. However until a few years ago, I was also playing falcon and other sims with him. He used a pair of reading glasses and could more or less see ok. The real problem was listening to his complaining about how "they used to bomb without needing a CCIP

…heh…me and your Gramps would get along, methinks.

well i’ll try revientor’s answer, seems solid. and thunder: that’s the kind of thing i whish i can get to with my grandpa, never been lucky enougth to have a famaly member play with me, espceially one that is a real life pilot… also i kinda like flying the older planes in BMS so… i guess we’d kinda get along on that XD
