Request tips on dedicated server flight that never cancels
-
We run a dedicated server that relies on a server flight going into 3D before the mission start, but this flight sometimes cancels before the players are done flying. Are there any tips on how to frag a dedicated server flight that you will keep on the runway and that you manually exit from at the end of the playing session?
Normally, we set up a C-141B as a training flight out of Kadena. His steer points are quite far east and west to increase the mission time. The server flight takes off to taxi. Everything is fine: he goes into 3D as expected. Sometimes it stays committed for the duration of the player flights. But sometimes it cancels while the players are still flying. When it cancels during active flight, players get the End/Continue dialog box on their screen. It doesn’t seem like multiplayer is impacted, but I have been led to believe that not having the server in 3D will cause problems in multiplay.
Are there any tips or tricks on how to frag a server flight that will never cancel? Any help is appreciated!

As you may or may not remember our only 100% method was to crash the server flight, or I should say, allow the AC to ditch out to sea. Away from all other AI units from entering its bubble, thus keeping “local load” to a minimum.
Then when presented with the option to exit the flight, cancel and remain in 3D.Yes it does increase the workload for the individual overseeing/controlling the host, but it works.

Top notch! Thanks guys!

I am curious for my information, how long your typical flight sessions last. Hours or days ? How many on server at same time ? There has been some discussion and evidence placed on more than one forum that having the server in 3D is not so important/beneficial as has been long stated. Thanks

Since the developers say that it must be on 3D… anything else is pure spequlation.
About time depents if it will be a TE or an online 24/7 campaign.

I did not ask you for non information. It is a FACT that people are doing just fine staying in 2D. Please do not reply. I am only interested in the OP`s response if any.

Sorry i did. Next time set the responders list prior or at the same post please.

I don’t think it’s non-information, it’s fairly well known and recommended that the server be in 3D and he is kind of right. If it does work in 2D (if there is a way), it isn’t sanctioned by the devs and there is a reason for it, mostly due to multiplayer stability. Finally I don’t believe you can really fairly ask anyone not to reply directly to your question, it is a forum after all, maybe you should PM the OP instead?

Experience proves 3D is the desired condition.
I could go on with years of examples, but do I have too?
Actually if you want a list of issues I could do one in the morning.

My typical sessions last 1-2 hours with 16-24 players on the server at the same time.
Prior to running the dedicated server in 3D, our team experienced issues such as phantom bandits and phantom missiles that would blow you out of the sky without warning. I recall there being other weird issues such as targets being hit but BMS not counting it. After running the server in 3D, these issues went away. But there have also been a number of patches since we started doing this.
I have heard from some people that it is indeed safe to run in 2D. I am nervous choosing this option given past experiences and the risk that it ruins an entire flight for a large number of people. But if there was hard proof that you can safely run a campaign in 2D, with or without config changes, I would certainly do that because it makes hosting easier.
Thanks again for the help, the atc.ini fix works great!

What would be nice to know are the issues in 4.33. Maybe some have been resolved. But also whether or not BMS has a good idea what causes the issues and what sort of priority they are placing on clearing those issues up. I know it’s volunteer work here so i am not trying to be demanding, I am just saying it would be nice to have this information.
BMS is amazing and it’s mind-boggling what they have done so far and if they can apply the attention to detail they have to the flight model to other areas the sim could really do a lot for its reputation and become THE sim. Less workarounds and more “just works” for multiplayer would be on the top of my list of wants.

Also did you guys see this post, it may help:

To me, it is…

Well said Lorik.

Darkfib3r covered some issues, others include, but not limited to:
AI Aircraft skimming the ground together with the inability to score a gun or missile hit on them.
AI flying backwards.
Problems/inconsistencies with spawning into the MP flight.
Unreliable AWACS calls
Problems with Data link. (Hard enough to get everyone on the same page at the best of times).
Kills showing as damage only.
Home Airfields disappearing. (Empty ground texture)
And more, but my brain is currently in 2D :drink: (2D = two drinks or more)
While it is true that many of these examples present them selves at other times they are almost always related to MP connection issues of one or more of the server clients.
