This might seem like a stupid question. Now before everybody jumps in and tells me that IFF isn’t modeled in BMS, and check older threads discussing this of why it’s not, I know this. What I want to know is why there is a command in the BMS key file for IFF in and out, and specifically what do they do if IFF isn’t modeled?? Also looking through the threads in Joystick section, I see alot of profile with these two commands binded somewhere on their HOTAS setup, which grabs my curiosity as to is if IFF is indeed working.

IFF is not modelled in BMS you’re right.

The IFF in/out stencil on the throttle is historical (just as for the Range knob which has no longer something to do with gun sight range adjustement.)

In BMS.key, IFF in/out command is for the IDM (dadalink)

Refer to BMS-manual.pdf for more details about HOTAS commands and IDM operations 😉

IFF In is to transmit ground targets via Datalink. IFF Out is to transmit A-A targets via Datalink. The Range Knob, by default, will adjust the FOV (zoom) in the TGP page, if you have a Targeting Pod installed.

…. And fine AG radar gain.

It does work. Pay attention carefully.

Just to bring up an old thread. I have been wondering about this IFF IN/OUT hotas button too. So it’s something that was on older models but isn’t used anymore?

I looked at the F-16 A/B model manual and didn’t find any info about it. So in real life do the pilots only use that switch for ATC comms (fwd/aft)?

The name is misleading since it does not relate to IFF anymore. It is used for datalink purpose - IDM especially in BMS, L16 as well in the real jet.

That would be detailed in a A/B model -34 document of which I know no public example.

Oh yeah, I found that site a few weeks ago. Couldn’t believe there were manuals on there I had been searching for (for a few months!)!
