After many attempts at trying to learn this sim and being put off by the learning curve I have decided to really go for it this time… so expect a lot of request for help 😄

Right I have managed to set up my controllers… I think. The axis are working fine just not sure about the button mapping.

First request for help / advice

What would be the recommended or best advised setup for the flares / chaff and the MFD’s in the data cartridge setup pages.

      Thanks

        Welcome back.

For chaffs/flares, I had always learnt to use 1 chaff or 1 flare at a time, and push the command several times. I started to configure it that way and have never changed so far. I configured my CMS hat to reflect that, not hesitating to configure a non-existing slap button on it. I have 2 positions on my CMS hat that launch either 1 chaff, either 1 flare. On a side note, you need to rely on movement (i.e. fleeing away and adding to missile decrease of potential energy) more than you ever used to in other games or sims before. And above all, avoiding the moment you get shot at.

For the DTC, go through BMS-Training. As you progress, you’ll see what you want to have when you start the aircraft. This will change over time, it’s part of the “game”.

It really depends on what threat(s) you expect to face, but a quick search for ‘countermeasures program’ brings up several threads worth reading.

Here is the most recent: https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?29222-Preferred-countermeasures-configuration&highlight=countermeasures+program

Don’t even think about chaff and flares. Your time with the sim is better spent elsewhere at this point.

There are so many options with regards to the MFD pages, can you please help me with a good all round setup to get me started until I get more familiar with the sim.

              Cheers guys

Keep the default one and change it over time.

If you’ve only set up your controllers, this is the place to start:

                  Falcon BMS 4.33 U1\Docs\Falcon BMS Manuals\BMS-Training.pdf

You will not need to use chaff or flares, or understand the DTC, for some time.

For assistance with controller setup, it would be helpful to know what controller(s) you are setting up, brands and models. I like the following MFD setup:

                    AG AA
                    MFD LEFT FCR-SMS-TGP FCR-SMS-RWR
                    MFD RIGHT HSD-HUD-WPN HSD-TGP-WPN

These are the CMS settings I use, and most of the guys in my wing use something very similar:

These are the MFD pages I use. This setup was given to me by a real world USAF F-16 pilot (with some modification as BMS doesn’t have the ECM page yet):

Hope you find that helpful. Cheers!

Regarding MFD layout “To the beginner there are countless possibilities. To the master there are few.” There is a sort of “default” configuration baked into the jet before loading. I like to use that as a template for the rest. FCR/SMS/HSD appear in all 5 modes in the same spots in all modes in my config. NAV gets DTE and TEST but the rest don’t. If the page has no direct involvement during the flight (WPN, TGP, FLCS, HAD, etc.) leave it blank. You can always custom configure a few blanks to some mission-specific page while you’re waiting for taxi clearance (or more properly for that particular flight in the office).

Blanks are good, consistency is good. Have what you need and need what you have.

For EWS, 1-2 flares on PGM6 is handy. Don’t worry about chaff or CMs much at all. You can have a very long and illustrious career in BMS without dropping a single countermeasure. It’s dealing with single digit % points on enemy Pk at the best with the possible exception of older heat-seeking AA missiles. If you spend more than a second thinking about it during an engagement that second is probably better spent doing something else more effective to counter the threat.
