Completely new to BMS, some dumb questions
-
Hi, am struggling through training sessions and am watching various different tutorials on youtube and also reading the training manual. Apart from having a king size headache (mostly caused by the volume of TLR’s) … I have a couple of issues / questions;
-
On the various tutorials, including some of the ramp start tutorials, they show the MFD1 and MFD2 to be multi coloured (blue & white), whereas when I select the training assignment under groundsops, in the F16 I get, I only see green MFD’s … is that due to folk on youtube selecting a different block F16 than is assigned in the groundops training mission, or does my install have an issue … which could possibly be causing 2) …
-
On the HUD, on all the videos I’ve seen, there is a box next to both the air speed and the altitude, showing the exact airspeed and altitude… however in the HUD on the F16 I get in the groundops mission, I don’t get any of the boxes pointing to the alitmeter or airspeed. Is this another block thing or have I got a problem ?
-
How do I determine which block F16 I’ve got in a mission ?
-
Where do I find a manual that helps me understand the MFD’s in the F16 ?
Thanks and sorry for the dumbness.
-
-
1 & 2 : it is just Block/Version dependent. Do not worry about it, this is not a bug.
3 : Briefing page.
4 : in your “Docs” folder.

you don’t have a problem and you guessed it right: as the training manual says page 9:
Although the Block 15 has no EGI and no coloured MFDs the procedure to start up the jet is just the same as in the Dash-1 Section II Chapter 1: RAMP START in 3 SWEEPS.
- How do I determine which block F16 I’ve got in a mission ?
in the UI, briefing page, arming screen, ATO, …
- Where do I find a manual that helps me understand the MFD’s in the F16 ?
the dash 1 in your doc folder has a whole chapter about MFDs: chapter 1.4

I was thinking “There are no dumb questions”
Until I read your Number 4 question
Almost everything you need in there…
-
“He who asks a question is a fool for five minutes; he who does not ask a question remains a fool forever.”
-Chinese proverb -
“He who asks a question is a fool for five minutes; he who does not ask a question remains a fool forever.”
-Chinese proverbI have a lot of five minutes under my belt
-
Pfft!! Some of my “five minutes” took way longer than five minutes

Polyfiller
When I started 5 years ago and being new to falcon which has evolved over the decades I didn’t really know where to start and there are lots of old manuals that didn’t apply anymore. Everything you need is in the docs folder and sub folders.
Take the time to go through the current manuals (BMS Manual, TO-BMSF-16CM-1 & 34-1-1). You can read it cover to cover but you will still need to go back and reference it. You can also pick a section and study it in the manual then practice it.
Also in the Checklists&CockpitDiagrams/F16Checklists Folder you can find some docs that fill in the gaps as well, Avionics checklists, Weapons checklists etc…
Take the time to learn the airplane and then go to the weapons. I realize this postpones some of the fun but there are lots of things to learn about the airplane that you will use in each mission and everyday flying so learn to walk before you run.
Then some of those basic questions can be answered before the need to ask.
Joining a Wing is also a great place to start.
A generous member here offered a little of his personal time to assist me when i started out and it really got me moving in the right direction quickly.
I’ll pay it forward as well, just PM if you need a little assistance.
Concerning some of the colorful commentary you may see on here, just ignore and move to a more constructive reply.
Cheers

Hey Sandman!! The quicker he’s used to the madhouse, the better!

As the OP quires have been solved
“He who asks a question is a fool for five minutes; he who does not ask a question remains a fool forever.”
Here’s one for you
“Man with hands in pockets feels cocky all day”

You guys been playing Civilization lately, good. Keep the quotes coming with Techs
I could imagine a BMS game with techs being new versions and updates, with their own special historical quote. And when you check the number of turns to reach them, it always says 3-4.

What a boring bunch with no sense of humor, or just no sense.
I’ve done my fair share and some more Training, assisting new members and not so new pilots with their setup and hardware problems, maintaining servers, vetting new members, organizing large scale events for almost 20 years now.
I reserve the right to point out, what in my view, was a dumb question. And as you dont like it Bill you might want to go :rtfm:

Where’s that popcorn smiley again??

If you want to be that way, Shadow I was never really all that impressed, I’d of thought with 20 years you might know more than you do. I don’t think you’re as knowledgeable as you say you are. I notice that most of your posts are a little bit mean, rather than actually helpful, but to each their own as I said, not really impressed.
Way to treat the new guy calling his question dumb. Refer to the cocky proverb with hands in pockets….

If you look at my post Shadow, I was not pointing the finger at any one person or comment specifically.
Simply stating, don’t let colorful comments shy you away from asking questions. First look to the manual and then when you’ve made an honest attempt, feel free to ask away.I’m sorry you feel you’ve been attacked, that was not my intention.
Can we Hug it out?

One year ago, Shadow posted that for me.
Hi LorikEolmin
I hope your next post on this forum receives a more gracious, less condescending response.
It some times feels like being behind enemy lines.
Hang in there friend……Shadow
You’re all good guys, gals.

Oh indeed! I will disagree with Sandman here though… don’t ignore the colorful comments… all BMS and no banter makes for a boring forum.
But by all means, feel free to ask silly questions here, that’s what the community is for — helping others out. Some people think it’s just for the “elites” to be patting each other on the back, but it’s not. At the very worst, you’ll be told to RTFM, but if the dude’s got any decency, he’ll actually cite page numbers for you to look atSometimes, you’re looking for something but you don’t know exactly how to search for it… either you don’t know the terms or the procedure, or you’re reading the paragraph but nothing just gets absorbed by the gray matter. It happens… more often than some care to admit! Again, that’s what the community is for.

Having agreed with Ice, I would just like to add that what I would prefer to see is a noob post that opens with something like:
“listen guys, have looked through all manuals which are a bit overwhelming but please point me to where I can find……”I spend a lot of time reading through the manuals on a regular basis because I always consider that I may have missed something (but then I am also somewhat of a scan-reader and do not spend enough time flying to remember as second nature)
The problem is that if we are not prepared to put time into reading the manuals at all (even when the Launch Page clearly calls them out) then we risk to forever ask the dumb questions -
All, thanks for the answers and advice. I did look in the Docs folder but didn’t know which manual specifically covered the MFDs …… I currently have open the BMS Manual and BMS training and one of the checklists. I’m guessing from the replies I need to start going through the TO_BMS1f manuals next… still very new to this. I have managed to do ramp start and take off. Still so many questions I need to answer (mostly for myself).
For now … many thanks all. Been involved in building mods for other games (Freelancer, Silent Hunter) … but have to say … BMS has blown me away in terms of quality of mod … it is, quite simply, staggering
