      Help (again)!

I am a recent returnee to this Sim having last flown regularly using F4 Allied Force. I have an X-52 (non-pro) stick and throttle and have been having a bit of trouble setting it up. I am also re-learning the F-16 but so far, so good…except…

      1. I still can’t find the gun command to map it to my trigger. It is not on the list of tasks in the in game setup menu. (Reported here under the Saitek subgroup)
      2. I made a change to the second hat switch to use it to slew my radar cursor. I got it to work and now the screen freezes mid-flight and I am unable to see only the top of the hud, the key commands don’t work and the plane departs from a controllable flight path.

I’m usually pretty patient and love solving puzzles but this one has me stumped. I just don’t understand what’s going on. Do I need to do a full uninstall/reinstall? Help…Please.

look for dash1 page 54 and following

        SimTriggerFirstDetent
        SimTriggerSecondDetent

in a normal situation that can’t be induced by the remapping of the cursors.
        can you give more information?

Sounds like there’s something else mapped to that hat switch? Maybe your axis are assigned wrong? This is exactly what happens to me when I don’t run my TARGET script before flying; the axis get screwed up and my throttle ends up controlling the rudder or something.

Ok…I double-checked and there’s nothing else assigned to the switch. I took a quick flight last night after posting and everything seemed fine. This was the first time this happened so I’ll just see how it goes. What’s the “TARGET script?” I’ve never heard of that. Sounds like a useful tool.

            Thanks for your help!

TARGET is the programming software for Thrustmaster products. Saitek’s version is the SST. 🙂

                Thanks, Red Dog:

Here’s the issue with the mapping…I’m having to map the buttons in-game (because I don’t know another way…help again) and when I attempt to map the second detent, the first detent of the trigger is captured instead. Right now I have the pinky switch mapped to the second detent…not optimal! Any suggestions in resolving this issue would be appreciated!

As far as the departure from controlled flight, the only thing I can point to is the remapping of that hat switch. I’ve confirmed that no other tasks are assigned to switch. I flew last night after posting my initial query and after one or two failures, the problem seems to have resolved itself. Other than that hat switch, do you have any suggestions regarding cause? Just want to make sure that I check everything out and possibly resolve the problem once and for all. I think my axes (sp) are assigned correctly.

                Thanks!

I was afraid of that! SST is apparently not compatible with Windows 10. When I tried to load the software, I received a message saying that it was only compatible with XP.

Sorry, can’t really help you regarding SST. As for mapping the second detent or mapping anything in general, my suggestion is to edit the .key file directly instead of using the in-game method. Use Notepad++ for this. However, I think the quickest way for you right now is to find a profile for your X-52. You’ll learn quicker that way and get in the air sooner rather than later. Head on over to this sub-forum to begin your search. Good luck!

I agree with Ice’s advice to start with a ready-made profile, especially for the part of the curve you’re on. Someone more experienced has already done all the work. You’ll get accustomed to it and spend more time learning the jet instead of editing your stick. Over time (two weeks or two years) you’ll find things you want to add, chop or change.

This what I did with Dunc’s files for my Cougar, and didn’t waste any of my early time in the sim trying to figure out how to set up my stick. As time has passed, I’ve modified it a little to taste, but it’s still mostly the same profile that came with BMS.

Find a good one, go with it and learn it. Personally I think you should look for a profile that puts the commands as close as possible to what’s in the real jet. Then over time as you become proficient with it you can suit to taste.

If you decide to start editing the key-file, like Ice said, best to do it manually… You may want the following guide made by Kolbe, hosted by blu3wolf although since you can’t use SST it’s probably going to be irrelevant but still… Also have a look in “BMS-install-folder>Docs>Key Files & Input” and have a look at “BMS-Full.key” all the way at the bottom… There’s comments explaining exactly how to program the buttons so that you can customize whatever you like… If you need any help with that, don’t hesitate to PM me since I’ve got quite some experience with it… I used morphine’s profile as a basis back in 4.32 & transformed it into something quite different (though there are still similarities since I did agree with some stuff) & have also been helping out most of my fellow squadron members to set up their controls 😉

Well, editing the .key file can have nothing to do with the HOTAS programming software… you can add DX functions directly.

Nupe2, can you not install SST under Win XP compatibility mode? Then again, I’m just guessing here. I’m sure you’ll get better help on the Saitek sub-forum of this site, linked above.

Thanks Raffson, Ice and everyone. I’ve found a setup and files that I’m going to try this evening. Stay tuned and yes, I want to get up flying and stop fiddling with this stick. Ice, I have also been away from pcs (MAC guy) for quite a while so I was unaware that there’s an XP compatibility mode. I’m going to give this profile a try (I don’t have the name in front of me but I believe one of you guys pointed me in the direction of this one).

Thanks for your help and for following up. Do you do taxes too? 😄

                              Cheers!

You’re on your own with taxes!

                                Good luck!
