ACMI recording
-
This evening, I flew with one of the other members here and only turned on the ACMI mid-flight. Still, I ended up with a 250+MB .flt file that converted into 330+MB ACMI. The compilation took almost 20 minutes, and thanks to gza036’s tip, I just exited the game and compiled it later in the evening. This got me thinking, what would happen if I turned ACMI on at the runway prior to takeoff? I’ll get a bigger ACMI file which means longer compilation time after a mission!
I wonder how you guys deal with bigger recordings? I have my limit set at 500MB and so far have not hit that limit yet, but then again, I’ve not been recording everything. Any tips for someone who’d like to do more ACMI recordings? What’s the best way to deal with the long compile times after a mission? Does it help if I turn off ACMI earlier, or does it just start compiling when I exit the mission and not when ACMI is turned off? Is there any way to skip compiling the .flt file and go to the debrief screen straight away?
Any tips, tricks, and advice would be greatly appreciated! I also have the Pro version of TacView so if there’s anything there that would help…
Thanks!

Campaigns get big, TEs are much smaller. I’ve done a chocks-to-chocks VHS recording in campaign. 20min is roughly what I remember the compilation time (Ctrl-S to quicksave before backing out is a life saver). The file size limit is just per file. It’ll make 2, 3, 4, etc. files if it hits the limit for a single file. As TrackView’s stitch feature is kinda balls I try to get it all in one file.
The .acmi.zip file should be an order of magnitude or more smaller than the .vhs that BMS spits out (how is .flt different?). I haven’t that canceling the AVTR gear speeds up the decompiling time in any way although I try not to exit with it still on. By the time a flight’s over everyone wants to run away to the bathroom, fridge, shower whatfor washing off the shame by then anyway. I kinda like it as a decompression time before coming back to debrief.

On my little own, I’m with all Frederf’s.
I got his same experience substantially, except for this matter: I chose to extend the ACMI recording time to its limit (1 Gb IIRC), just because I’m lazy and didn’t want to waste my time in joining several ‘tapes’ if in need to get an overall mission analysis.
A few times I took advantage of that effectively - I’m meaning of a 750 Mb circa file, covering all several packages’ activities.Hope this little helps.
With best regards,

If it hits the limit (say 500MB) and ends up making 3 files, does that mean 20min compilation per file = 60min?
.flt is the un-compiled data, .vhs is the compiled data.

Campaigns get big
I was the other pilot and this was in Rolling Fire on the first morning so they don’t get much bigger than that. Upon exit I was in the ‘leaving aircraft, standby’ screen for more than 5 minutes anyway. Does one guy saving the ACMI effect the exit time on other players in his flight?
It’s always possible I had recorded my own ACMI ‘uncommanded’

Times I said are very rough and for the whole process. Maybe it is a rule of thumb that 1 hour equals X minutes compile time. I haven’t actually timed it with a stop watch. Any minute staring at a black screen feels like 5.
The only effect on each other is that if server has to wait for one guy to get to debrief before he can start his exit and compile. Server going 2D in the middle of someone else heading to 2D is usually a client crash.

How do you compile??
