HUD and SA Bar Colors
-
So I don’t know if it’s me or the sim. I am color vision deficient.
Anyway it’s daytime I am flying over the clouds and I can’t read the bottom of the HUD against the clouds. However, I can easily read the HMCS “hud” against the clouds if I look out the side of the canopy.
Now here’s the real strange behavior. Even though the HUD and HCMS appear to be displaying in the same color, when I swivel my head back to the HUD I can read the bottom of it for a few seconds before it fades out again. I swivel off the HUD to HCMS and back and again I can read the bottom of the HUD.
Is the sim doing that or are my eyes playing tricks on me?
I am using bright white for the HUD as, strangely enough, that is what shows up best against white clouds for me.
Also, is there some way that I can config the HUD and-or the S-A bar colors? I know Alt + H changes the HUD colors but I’d really like to have just plain old black so I could actually read the HUD against bright white clouds (so I am looking for a way to change HUD colors to any RGB value not just the predefined set). And the S-A bar is too bright at night for me and my eyes aren’t able to adjust if I use it. Thanks.

On a side note, I’m not certain about what you describe (I wonder about HDR but it may be a stupid guess), but troubles to clearly see the HUD depending on what is behind and brightness of the clouds appears to be a real (life) phenomenon.

Vandal,
I’ve never seen(no pun intended) your HUD fadeout thing, but you may want to try the yellow color. I have issues with the Hornet HUD and that helps me a lot. Another thing I experimented with is cancelling the HMCS blanking over HUD and/or heads down. You do that off the ICP in 'pit(list>num 0>num del)
As far as I know, you can’t change the SA-bar brightness or color(at least I’ve never found a way) -

Your eyes aren’t tricking you. If you look at the HUD (HUD between you and clouds), you barely can read it, once you look at a dark surface and then backup, it adjusts the brightness/contrast again, so you can read it for a second or so. Like your eyes, BMS adjusts a bit the brightness/contrast between bright and dark surfaces.
You can also try to put the HUD on one of your MFD pages…

@LorikEolmin Yeah it should be an issue in RL I would think. And as a general rule I don’t mind contending with problems that also occur in real life, that makes it more of a sim than a game, but on the other hand I would LOVE to be able to simulate having perfect color vision and hope that others can understand why.
@drtbkj Thanks! I did try yellow (in fact all of the Alt + H colors) and it helps depending on the time of the day, weather, etc. to go white or yellow or my favorite is light green (I think lol) at night. I’ll try experimenting with the HCMS settings to see if that helps.
@razo Oh that’s curious! Why would in RL or in BMS you’d want to make it harder to read the HUD after a few seconds, or is it easier to read for most people just not old folks or color vision impaired folks or something? I mean if I can see it at first and it adjusts so that I can’t see it, well that’s adjusting the wrong way (at least for me). I suspect it probably helps color vision people using a contrasting color like green against white or what not, but for me regardless of color it goes from being easier to read to harder to read (any color against white clouds). I mean I can see this just fine or this or this or this against white here in the forums, but not in the HUD. LOL. But yeah I will try that HUD in MFD that should help a lot!

Well, when you look at a dark surface, it will turn up the brightness, like your eye trying to see better in the dark (it’s like when you are in a tunnel, before entering, outside is “normal” and the tunnel is very dark, once entered, the inside will get brighter and you can see stuff. close to exit, the outside is bright? (didn’t drive through one since a long time)). Once you look back up to the bright part, it will put the brightness down so it is more comfortable to look at it.

I am going to try sunglasses next chance I get. I wonder if there’s any eyeglass products on the market to help out folks in my situation? I haven’t looked before because it really doesn’t seem to screw me up to the point of being helpless (except when working with Cat 5 and color coded wiring).

Oh that makes sense for folks with good color vision! Unfortunately, it works against folks like me to the point I just can’t read the bottom of the HUD at all. Darn these eyes of mine! LOL

Vandal, I’m seriously getting a pair of “computer glasses”. My partner here at work swears by them. I wonder if that would help you, as well.

hi guys,
this project is very interesting for the future
I thought about this , imagine a new concept of hud
can we change the color of object in programming of hud
for example : i applied a new color on ZLD only to change a number in program and i don’t touch other parameters
good journey

I am slightly far-sighted and use computer glasses also. They bring the monitor at 30" viewing distance into sharper focus than reading glasses. Inexpensive from online eyeglass providers.

yes it’s right
