RE: Recommended PC for BMS
Been curious in a good combat oriented Flight Sim. I looked at the original F4.0 many years ago. After finding out about BMS, Im highly curious in trying it out again. My Specs are as follows:
AMD A8 Quad-Core Processor 3.2ghz O/C’d to 3.5ghz
AMD Radeon 7470M GPU with 1GB DDR3 VRAM
8GB DDR3 1600 RAM
1TB HDD
21" Screen
I do have a Stick, Throttle and Pedals I use for FSX as well.Would this be good to run F4:BMS at decent settings without an impact and smooth FPS ?
I did look over at the specifications… But not too sure where my Sim Rig would fit into the situation. I definitely know its on the lower side of the spectrum.
But any additional advice would be nice. Thanks All
-JoeI would upgrade the video card. I think your CPU is ok, but an AMD 7470 isn’t much better than a stock Intel HD chip. I would go with an R9 series or an Nvidia 970. One point about the AMD cards, they use much less power than the comparable Nvidia cards, and you can get by with a smaller PSU. The majority of people say that Nvidia is better performance, but in my opinion the AMD cards have better image quality. Tomato, tomato I guess.

RE: Recommended PC for BMS
One thing I would really like in a new case is a hard drive dock. I don’t care about USB3 or Thunderbolt ports on the front, you can always run those off the motherboard or an expansion card. But being able to slide a hard drive into the case instead of breaking out my USB convertor kit would be awesome.

RE: Recommended PC for BMS
I would get a black one with a fan in the back.
Its a bit outdated but have a look here https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/content.php?132
I would not get a i7 but go for the best i5 you can afford.
Min i5 6500. Spend the money you save on the GPU.Ram will be DDR 4. Min of 8gig. 16gig will future proof you, in more ways then then I will explain here. 3000MHz seem to be a good speed rating at this time. G.Skill is my favored brand, but others like Corsair or Crucial. Kingston was popular in the past.
Motherboards is a big subject. Gigabyte, Asus. MSI is another popular well established name. Asrock make budget boards, try not to. A good board will use a Intel Z170 chipset. The H170 chipset you will find on slightly cheaper boards but, as long as you never want to overclock and lacks some features but is still OK.
Bare minimum GPU: R9 380 or GTX 960 either with 4gig of onboard Ram. A 2gig card will only disappoint you latter.
It seem some of the smaller venders skimp on the quality of Power Supply Units. Good brands like Antec, Coolermaster, Thermaltake or Corsair are the popular PSU with for the most part good Reps. 550/650watt is enough.
Don’t go for a “flashy” looking “case” often the simple looking boxes are actually better.
Antec Three Hundred Two is a very good example http://www.anandtech.com/show/5462/antec-three-hundred-two-stay-cool-budget-enthusiasts. (A good case will have some form of dust filtering.)Hope this helps you make an informed choice, or at least help you know what to look at.
PS: Must have a SSD main drive of 250GB and a mechanical storage drive. Samsung 850 EVO & Western Digital “Blue” are my recommendations.
Good hunting……
As far as cases are concerned, I’m something of a cheapskate and am using a 6 year old case that I bought off a coworker for $20. As long as you replace the fans regularly and the PSU and cabling fits it’s not a big deal. Air flow is key, unless you put liquid cooling in. I’m not quite so big on overclocking, I’ve literally blown up motherboards doing it. One case I have still has the scorchmarks……

RE: Recommended PC for BMS
I know you said you don’t know anything about a custom build, but that is really the best way to learn the basics of modern computers in general. That way you can buy whatever hardware you want, and prioritize certain aspects. Like for Falcon or DCS, you could get by with a 6th gen I5 3.3 and Radeon r9 and 8 Gbs of ram. If you want a stronger gaming computer, you could get an I5 3.5, a Geforce 980 and 16 Gb ram (don’t forget cooling if you want to overclock). Or if you just need to run Photoshop or Office, you can get an I5 3.2 and use the onboard graphics chip. It’s really all your choice, and 99% of parts have a 3 year warranty. Best of all, in the long run you can save money. If you can find an OEM Dell Windows 7 disk laying around you can install it, activate it via phone, and then upgrade to 10. Again that’s your choice. With prebuilt PCs like Alienware, you will spend $3000 on a PC you could have built yourself for less than $1800. A budget of $2000 will get you a real monster that you can build and will serve you well for years. Trust me, it’s not as difficult as it looks.

RE: Well, Here We Go Then.
I’ve mainly got experience with Saitek and the Cougar, and I have to say the old Foxy and Korgy programs beat TARGET and the crappy Saitek software by a country mile. It’s complicated at first, but once you learn the syntax there is nothing you can’t program that stick to do. I only assign axis controls in game, and that’s only for the antenna and radar cursors. I wonder if Foxy works with the Warthog. I don’t have an extra $500 laying around to test it.

RE: Free Anti Virus: your advice please
NoScript Addon for FF and/or Chrome and uBlock Addon for the same. Together with brain.exe 1.01 - best virus protection.
Beside that I use Avast free for the case that brain.exe has any fatal errors^^
That’s what I tell everyone. If it looks weird don’t click it. If the email comes from your friend and you aren’t expecting it, don’t click it. Pick up the d**n phone and ask about it.

RE: Free Anti Virus: your advice please
Great story from my workplace…
Accounting dept. at work received some spam / infected attachment emails as usual.
AV caught them and quarantined them in a sandbox or whatever.
Accountant (not surprisingly) removes the attachment from the quarantined area and attempts to open it since they believed it was a legitimate attachment from a known sender. (probably spoofed, really early in the morning, or just not computer savvy)
AV complains again and quarantines it for a second time…
Accountant (again not surprisingly) now disables AV scanning for the aforementioned file and re-attempts to open attachment.
Entire network infected… Script ran through all office related extensions (.pdf / .zip / .xls / etc…) on both local and networked systems encrypting the found files and/or infecting others.
Dude doing network security didn’t foresee the huge security flaw of having all terminals accessible from each-other, not to mention company didn’t have a backup of the servers.
A note then appeared stating if money was not transferred to their Bitcoin account within 2 days they will throw away the encryption key.
Had a good laugh…
On a side note, would have to assume those who use AV solutions probably:
- Browse a lot of porn on the web.
- Download and execute modified executables often associated with pirated software.
- Reply something along the lines of popcorn when asked about a kernel.
Ransomware is getting really bad these days. I’m an IT engineer / consultant and every one of my clients has a Windows bare metal backup as well as an offsite backup. I’ve seen the cryptowall / cryptolocker quite a bit over the last few years, and because of good backups in place, I have never had to pay the ransom (knock on wood). Everytime there’s an infection, the culprit computer user always claims “I never opened any weird emails” or “I never clicked on any weird websites.” BS.
The only A/V that I’ve seen stop the cryptowall is Malwarebytes premium, which isn’t free, and Kaspersky. Of all the A/V out there Kaspersky is the strongest, but it’s very invasive and can interfere with production software, like accounting software packages and VPN access. I will say that Trend has stepped up it’s game. I’ve seen it stop alot of nasty stuff lately. I’m a big fan of Trend. Like I said, Kaspersky causes too many problems than it solves.

RE: 4.33.1 will release shortly: what you need to know and how to be prepared
This might sound premature, but will 4.33.1 have the cockpit fixes for the F-15E? I love the Viper and the F-18 is good, but when I saw that 4.33 had a viable F-15E I was overjoyed. It’s too bad a certain other sim developer won’t embrace it. It’s still a viable aircraft and many Air Forces, including the US and Israel, prefer the upgraded F-15E to the cluster that is the F-35. Screw stealth, sheer firepower will continue on for the near future. Not trying to troll, just stating an observation
