Moon Rise…
And now, for something completely different…
If I may take a moment to pass on some mournful news: Jeff “Rhino” Babineau, the founder of the 209th Virtual Fighter Squadron, “The Delta Hawks” has died from a long illness.
He may not be familiar to most, but he is a distinct part of Falcon History. Since 1994, Jeff with the help of like-minded friends gathered once a month for LAN parties to test fly a little known flight sim known as Falcon 3.0. Their only desire was a “longing for missions where the wingmen actually had skill”. As I understand the story, this evolved to Spectrum Holobyte bringing them on as full fledge Beta Testers. They grew in size, status and technology being the first to use online communications by means of a Shoutcast server. And thanks to co-founder Dan “Crash” Crenshaw, gave us “How to Live and Die in the Virtual Sky”.
For those who do remember Rhino, you know of the wild accounts in the basement of his Stockton, CA home known to all as The Bunker. Catch a glimpse of what that was like in my previous Youtube post above. https://forum.falcon-bms.com/post/367152
In RL, Jeff attained the rank of Captain and served with distinction as a tank commander in the Army National Guard.
He is noted in the exit screen credits, along with other members of The Delta Hawks gang and memorialized among the photos in our Logbook as graphic M_W_3_18.
I don’t know that he had much family outside of his Falcon family, so a simple request from the remaining Delta Hawks is, during any future Falcon LAN party, please honor Rhino’s memory with a pint.
A few of the remaining Delta Hawks. On the left: Maestro & Tango. On the right Godwerb. And in a Zoom call was Shockwave.
Cheers,
Jolly
A few screen shots I took over the past few months…
This is probably a superfluous post. (I mean really, who among us needs any F-16 based motivation??) But if you need a quick and easy F-16 fix feel free to reference it here.
I’ll start off with this video from the Hill AFB’s museum’s YT Channel. If you ever find yourself in Utah (it’s not really a major vacation spot) try to find your way to the “Mecca” of F-16 here in the U.S.
Until then…enjoy the video.
Cheers,
Jolly
And more of Gilman Louie (circa Falcon AT Days. His interview starts at about 5 min)…
I’ve posted this video elsewhere, but it deserves to be here. The 209th Delta Hawks in all their glory…
@mustangs6551 said in Brain freeze when getting jammed, need help with BVR tactics.:
**1. Assuming it was one pair of 23’s jamming me, should I have turned?
Was the jamming worse because 2 pairs, maybe 3 pairs were jamming me? Campaign wise, how should I have proceeded? Should I have ran all the way home, requested help, or moved further south in safer territory? What are the campaign repercussions for say “heck no” and going home?"**
Regardless of whether it’s Mig-23/29’s or Su-27’s, IF You do not have the upper hand, turn back toward friendly territory. There is ALWAYS Safety in Numbers and in BMS, 2 v [Anything] (other than 2v1) is a risk of getting shot down.
The fact that there is extra aircraft jamming really does not have any affect on engagements. What does help is “narrowing your radar beam” and putting a concentrated energy on the target.
Again: THere is Safety in Numbers, so do not try to fight alone. The AI works pretty well at attacking when given a chance. But AWACS does not always send help, so you will need to turn toward friendlies.
The only repercussions is that you have more aircraft for future missions when you turn and run. If you look at the ATO, you will probably notice that other missions for the same target are being generated, so you’ll have many opportunities.
Just a recommendation: Join a Virtual Fighter Squadron and learn from others. It’s the best way to learn this game.
<p>@Razzamattaz Possibly another option for you. <br /><br /><a href=“https://forum.falcon-bms.com/topic/21078/foxvox-free-voice-control-software-for-bms?_=1647705025651” target="blank">https://forum.falcon-bms.com/topic/21078/foxvox-free-voice-control-software-for-bms?=1647705025651</a><br /></p>
Yes, there is an on going issue with AI wingman. No one has been able to reproduce these actions on a regular basis, so it’s a bit difficult to fix the issue with a clear causal factor to investigate.
Personally, I have given up on flying anything greater than a 2-ship in any Air-Ground rolls due to this issue.
My suggestion is create a Save Day before entering 3D and if it occurs again, re-fly that mission to see if you can make it happen again.
If you are asking about how one is able to place non-flying aircraft around a base in DCS? …BMS does not have that option. Some Dev’s have placed static aircraft around some of the larger, more used airbases for ambience, but that’s not really a Falcon thing. It is more about the campaign and battle space environment.
If you are looking for a busier airbase ambience, then do what @skippermike suggested by creating a Tactical Engagement (TE) and add multiple flights with takeoff times separated by a couple minutes or so. This will give you that ambience plus it will be a bit more realistic as you become disgruntled by sitting in line and waiting for your turn to take off.
@tiag said in Batallion status:
Give please some thought on the following.
Other day after a MP mission in one large squadron well known in our community I also heard that, “frustrating”. These guys flew a mission and took out (AFAIR) a SA-11 or part of it. These guys landed after a 1-2 hours of action and suddenly that battery was back online.
Not real. Agree. It should take many, many hours, perhaps days or even weeks to get such a battery fully back online.
However, these guys have already fragged another large package for few hours later. MC was used and they put new airframes (since they lost about 1/4 of the F-16s).
Can you see the incongruence here? We, as players, want to fly as often and soon after a mission as possible (fair enough, its a game). But the F4 engine is not allowed to resupply/refuel/replace the units (may happen 1-2 per hour).
I am totally in favor of using real resupply rates, but then we should use real sorties rates, otherwise we are shooting ducks on a barrel.
Take a read here to understand what would mean in practice real sortie rates:

@tiag
I do see your point of creating several sorties to re-attack certain targets, but ( and this is my OCD talking) I just see that as being redundant. And Yes, re-attacking targets to ensure they are not effective is a part of standard battle doctrine.
Plus I generally do not see a battalion regenerate as quickly as @JetNoise describes. If I attack an armored or mech battalion it will remain at a lower strength percentage, although I tend to create missions with a full force of A-10s, AH-64s and other aircraft just to be thorough.
Is the battalion located at a base?? Or in a town? These are the logical explanations. Also make sure its the same battalion. Battalions like to park on top of one another, therefore you may see another battalion in the same brigade.
If “No” to either then just consider the campaign engine is not perfect. The re-supply code is one that isn’t the best.
To reiterate what @Icarus stated, feel free to join a Virtual unit. You will learn more from a human than from your own trial & error. I rejoined the community in 2015 and was amazed at the learning curve from the Falcon “OG”/AF days. And it’s been a steady climb ever since.
A few screen shots I took over the past few months…
@Rouge1512 A tactic that tends to work is to move the TARCAP steerpoints further south. And when you get jumped by Red Air then flow south to the TARCAP “Line”.
@sniperpr1 said in How to exit mission:
If you are not seeing a window pop-up which states [Exit] [Resume] & [Discard] then your Escape key may have gone bad.
@manish-coder Sure about the pitch & roll? Are you looking in the Alt Launcher? I believe you can make the arrow keys or really whatever you wish under the “Keymapping” tab.
@tdr said in how to go beyond the limits of a scenario:
only a white fog…
The white fog is the wall. Time to turn around cuz the game doesn’t necessarily recognize anything beyond the… Fog.
