F-16 Canopy reference codes - Interpretation?
I’ve started doing some formation flying and have found that Figure 3.1 in the F-16 MCH contains “Canopy reference codes”.
There seem to be two reference codes; one seems to reference degrees off the nose, but I am unsure what the other (on the right hand side of the diagram) references; does it refer to degrees back from the HUD or the vertical? If not, (a) to what does it refer and (b) how would I use it when flying formation?
I have performed a search on the forum and on the web but cannot find an answer.

RE: Joystick recommendations?
It better be for the price they are charging. LOL It’s my dream to own one but my wife would break my legs. LOL
I got mine second hand at a substantially better price than new. Saved me getting knee-capped…

RE: No EWS in Israel theatre?
CMS Left doesn’t seem to work on the Warthog. Been that way for a while, I haven’t found anyone who has a solution yet.
You may well have seen this, but there was a version of the TARGET software that affected CMS left and one or two other switches: https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?27093-New-TARGET-Software-Update
I had the same problem with CMS left and one of the ENG switches and reverted to an earlier version of TARGET that had previously worked for me.
I believe there is now an updated version that also works but I haven’t tried it personally.
Hopefully, it isn’t your switch…

RE: HOTAS
I bought a used warthog, which helped mitigate the financial outlay.

RE: Mission Commander beta release
I just wanted to say a public thank you to Falcas for working on his excellent MC, helping me to convert missions from Allied Force to BMS 4.33.U1.

RE: Recommended TM WH profile?
I’ve been using Mud’s profile but made subtle changes for my own requirements and I think it is an excellent profile.
But as you’ve used Morphine’s for a long time, you are probably most familiar with his (great) profile - there probably isn’t a compelling reason to change.

RE: Mission Commander beta release
Hey,
Limited what I can do the next couple of days…
If you get a real crash (not just a message), please post the JIT crashlog.
If you only get a message saying pilots might be corrupt, just click ok and continue.Gr Falcas
Hi Falcas
Sorry it has taken me a while to reply to your helpful post. I appreciate that you are on holiday.I’ve done some testing and I get the following issues:
1. When I attempt to load the AF *.trn missions, I get the ‘pilot corrupted’ message, press OK and then nothing happens and the mission will not load however I long I wait.
2. When I load the AF *.tac missions, I get the ‘political data may be corrupt’, however, when I press OK, the mission then loads fine and I can convert away.
3. On saving these missions, I get the following JIT file message:See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.************** Exception Text **************

To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.For example:
<configuration></configuration>
When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.One thing that has bothered me is that my AF install is on a separate hard drive to the main BMS install but I’m not sure that should make a difference.
I recognise that it may be my system/user error and I appreciate any help you may be able to offer (your time and other priorities permitting).

RE: Training mission #6, ILS in bad weather…...weather data.
I should also have given credit to Falcas for WDP - thanks Red Dog.
@Bayonet - glad you noticed that, well spotted! Yes, the good old 616 Squadron, which was formed in my part of the world, South Yorkshire, - hence my callsign, “Tyke” (which is a slightly derogatory term for a Yorkshire person).
Hello Eliot323
Very good, thanks.
(616 RAF ??)

RE: Training mission #6, ILS in bad weather…...weather data.
The weather data you are describing is based on ATIS/TAF/METAR weather reporting formats.
The format is highly standardised by the ICAO and the WMO but there are international variations; for example, the FAA reporting format for North America departs from the international standards in a few minor ways, mainly related to non-standardised units of measurement, such as atmospheric pressure (measured in mm Hg in the US versus hecto-pascals in Europe and elsewhere). It looks to me that BMS follows the ICAO standard but I’m sure one of BMS veterans will be able to say definitively.
I don’t think there is any information in any of the BMS manuals (if there is, I haven’t found it either), but there are a lot of resources online to help.
Check out this thread https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?11969-Reading-ATIS-Shorthand&highlight=METAR for assistance.

RE: EEGS Gunsight questions
Thanks for the help. I’ll be able to re-watch the videos and concentrate on the MPLs now I have a better understanding of what they do.
The gun kills are so fast, fluid and dynamic that without specific guidance, it can be hard to know what to focus on, particularly when it is a snapshot, rather than a tracking shot.

RE: EEGS Gunsight questions
As you get closer to the bandit, it has less chance of avoiding the bullets - makes sense. Thank you.
-
RE: EEGS Gunsight questions
Thanks Leech - it’s good to know how accurate BMS Falcon is!
Would you say, then, that the ideal POM firing solution is to ensure that the gun cross is perpendicular to the MPLs (assuming that you’ve solved the range and lead problems)?

EEGS Gunsight questions
I’m working my way through employing the gun and the EEGS gunsight in the sim, reading the Dash-1-1 and the MCH handbook. I have a couple of questions:
1. I seem to remember reading somewhere on the forum that the gunsight funnel in BMS always represents gun plane of motion (POM), and does not transition to target POM, as it does IRL. Is this correct?
2. I think I understand how to employ the sight when the target is predictable and the tracking solution is stable. However, I’m finding it hard to visualise how to use the out-of-plane maneuvering lines (T-symbol) with evasive/jinking targets. Please would you explain how to use this part of the gunsight in combat?
Thank you for any help.

RE: Mission Commander beta release
Hi eliot323,
Did you ever have any luck converting those training missions? It would be great to fly them in 4.33.
Hi Falcas
Just wondered when you’re back from hols whether you have any advice for me. I can’t get F4AF missions to convert because of a “pilot data corrupted” error message.I’m using a legitimate retail copy of F4AF with a standard install, Windows 7XP and rest of specs in my sig.
Thank you!

RE: TargetScript stops working randomly.
Talking of firmware (and not wanting to hijack the thread), have TM eliminated the bug(s) that prevented correct functioning of some of the switches that some users (including me) experienced?
