RE: Mixed reality proof of concept and new Virtual Desktop with passthrough mask
@Aragorn in a nutshell, what you see in the video is a recording from inside his VR set.
Some VR headsets have cameras that allow you to film the real environment and show that in your headset.
Virtual Desktop is an app you run on your pc and your VR headset to stream your desktop or game to your VR set.
Since an update of VD, it allows to set a ‘mask’ for pass through. Compare it with a green screen for video effects. VD will stream the game/pc graphics by default (in this case, BMS in VR), and everything that has a certain defined color (green, pink, whatever you set), it will not show the game on that location but will pass through the video image the cameras on you headset capture.
That way you create an immersive mixed reality. You see everything in your VR headset but what you see is a mix of pc/game footage and surroundings camera footage. -
RE: Pics of your flight setup / home cockpit
@Skorp Thanks. Love this thing.
If I ever stop simming, it will become my desktop chair -
RE: Virtual crew chief
And maybe I’ll get in touch with Bogey Dope about a BMS version.
Unless I’m missing something crucial, this could already be used in BMS, no?
It’s not linked to any BMS specific item AFAIK. It’s just a series of audio auto-replies on sentences you say.
If you activate this in your VA and say the same sentences during BMS ramp start, you get the same replies.
According to VA FAQ’s you can even import another profile into yours. So I assume you could merge your own BMS VA profile (for ATC comms etc) into the vCrewchief profile and go. -
RE: Pics of your flight setup / home cockpit
@b0bl00i information for plans etc were found over 10 years ago on viperpits.org, don’t have them anymore though.
Yes, regular Thrusmaster MFD bezels.
Yes, 4 different screens used in the pit part. 1x 10" for RWR & left MFD; 1x 10" for center console; 1x 10" for FFI, ADI & right MFD; 1x 4" for EHSI. -
RE: Objects flickering from afar and HUD not visible against horizon
I find the same issue. The 4.33 HUD is much worser to read than the older legacy BMS one from 4.32.
Sure your HUD switch on the HUD panel on the right consoles is set to “day” and not “auto brt”? Auto brightness doesn’t always work good for me so I mostly set it to day or night manually and fine-tune with the left top thumbwheel on the ICP.

RE: Passtrough is zoomed?
@Fish44 lastest version of Virtual Desktop allows for passthrough.
It’s only available up till VR graphic quality settings ‘high’ and below (not ultra & godlike). Then on the same streaming settings page on the bottom, under sharpening, you can enable passthrough and configure it.
I configure it to pure black, first slider 1% second slider 5%.
Then in BMS I define the empty 3D shell in my keyfile. This will toggle an empty 3D pit I already use when I’m using the simpit. The empty shell is black. So in VR 3D, the black shell gets replaced by what the passthrough camera’s see.

RE: Keyfile and pokeys
@Atlas Been over 7 years since I did a build myself but IIRC, when you use DX you’re limited to 32. When you use a matrix with keystrokes assigned, you can add way more inputs on one board.

@Stevie thanks! I have a couple of the Avi-8 timepieces, really like them.

RE: SteamVR lag & stuttering
@Focaldesign said in SteamVR lag & stuttering:
Think I found it.
Looking back at my screenshots I noticed the 5GHz- 130Mbps next to the wifi logo. It used to say a lot higher Mbps. So I pulled out the entire usb-c to ethernet adapter and noticed VD was still working in the settings as in the screenshot.
So I’m guessing the entire adapter is broken and it switched back to wifi instead of actual ethernet connection/speeds; as wifi isn’t the best around here, that might be giving insufficient bitrates while the fixed 100Mbs setting is then having issues.Suspicion confirmed. Ordered & tested a new adapter and now power & signal are coming through. Solid 90 FPS without budging. Happy camper.

@oleuzop hmm, could be. Let’s hope a new update comes soon so I can rule that out or find out it’s fixed.

SteamVR lag & stuttering
Running any game in 3D non VR is butter smooth.
Running Virtual Desktop in Pico4 runs smooth as well.
But since this week when I start SteamVR, it’s choppy. Stuttering, lagging, frame drops…3 screenshots during a dogfight session in BMS, moving my head from left to right I’m getting major latency & frame drops.
Any idea what is going on?Any idea what’s causing this? I’ve tried about all fixes I could find in Google but none seem to work.
PC specs:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
- MoBo: X670 gamin x AX
- GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 4080 16GB Ventus 3X OC D6X
- SSD: Samsung 980 Pro 2 2TB
- RAM: G.Skill 64 GB DDR5-6000 Trident
- VR: Pico4
All drivers are up-to-date;
Pico connected via dedicated router & switch with like thisNVidia settings:
- all default except
- set to max performance where possible
- prerendervr frames: 1
BMS settings:
- latest version,
- all set to max,
- I’m getting over 400FPS in regular 3D and was getting solid stable 90FPS in VR up till last week. So doubt it’s BMS related.
Virtual Desktop settings
- fixed bitrate 100MBPS (performance overlay says I can have 130)
- Godlike graphics
- 90FPS (also tried 72 fps but no difference)
SteamVR settings (tried original latest version and now latest beta version)
- 100% image resolution
Other settings:
- Steam processes set to higher priority
- Audio only send to headset
