RE: Mixed reality proof of concept and new Virtual Desktop with passthrough mask
@Aragorn in a nutshell, what you see in the video is a recording from inside his VR set.
Some VR headsets have cameras that allow you to film the real environment and show that in your headset.
Virtual Desktop is an app you run on your pc and your VR headset to stream your desktop or game to your VR set.
Since an update of VD, it allows to set a ‘mask’ for pass through. Compare it with a green screen for video effects. VD will stream the game/pc graphics by default (in this case, BMS in VR), and everything that has a certain defined color (green, pink, whatever you set), it will not show the game on that location but will pass through the video image the cameras on you headset capture.
That way you create an immersive mixed reality. You see everything in your VR headset but what you see is a mix of pc/game footage and surroundings camera footage. -
RE: Virtual crew chief
And maybe I’ll get in touch with Bogey Dope about a BMS version.
Unless I’m missing something crucial, this could already be used in BMS, no?
It’s not linked to any BMS specific item AFAIK. It’s just a series of audio auto-replies on sentences you say.
If you activate this in your VA and say the same sentences during BMS ramp start, you get the same replies.
According to VA FAQ’s you can even import another profile into yours. So I assume you could merge your own BMS VA profile (for ATC comms etc) into the vCrewchief profile and go. -
RE: Pics of your flight setup / home cockpit
@b0bl00i information for plans etc were found over 10 years ago on viperpits.org, don’t have them anymore though.
Yes, regular Thrusmaster MFD bezels.
Yes, 4 different screens used in the pit part. 1x 10" for RWR & left MFD; 1x 10" for center console; 1x 10" for FFI, ADI & right MFD; 1x 4" for EHSI. -
RE: Helios and YAME64; whats the difference?
Best is to install both and you’ll notice immediately
In a nutshell:
Helios is primarily for making panels with switches, knobs and buttons to be used with touchscrens to interact with the BMS cockpit. Every touch/flick on a switch from helios on your touchscreen will convert the action into the correct keyboard combination to trigger the action in BMS.
As secondary function, it allows you to read some data from BMS shared memory to show for example lights (master caution, eyebrows etc) and extract some basic stuff like the MFDs.YAME64 is the opposite. It’s primarily to extract data from BMS and have you extract all sorts of instruments (MFD, HUD, DED, ADI, machmeter etc) with a lot of photo realistic parts onto your additional monitors.
Secondary, it offers some touch functions such as an ICP, knobs of the center pedestal parts, CP60 etc.Guys like Ice have made a nice profile that combines both
On this page you can scroll down to the video’s and look at some that are YAME only and some that have the combination. -
RE: Passtrough is zoomed?
@Fish44 lastest version of Virtual Desktop allows for passthrough.
It’s only available up till VR graphic quality settings ‘high’ and below (not ultra & godlike). Then on the same streaming settings page on the bottom, under sharpening, you can enable passthrough and configure it.
I configure it to pure black, first slider 1% second slider 5%.
Then in BMS I define the empty 3D shell in my keyfile. This will toggle an empty 3D pit I already use when I’m using the simpit. The empty shell is black. So in VR 3D, the black shell gets replaced by what the passthrough camera’s see.

RE: Easiest way to Mixed Reality
Can someone share their settings in Virtual Desktop to get the passthrough, please?
I’ve set it to High, as ultra & godlike don’t seem to let you enable the VR Passthrough checkbox.
Color set as mentioned in BMS documentation (red 255 green 0 blue 255).
I’ve played with similarity, smoothness & opacity, but I never get passthrough video, only a big pink blob in my pit (so yes, I’ve activated the vr & ar settings in bms correctly).EDIT/ ok found it. Seems the pink (255,0,255) isn’t entirely correct. I had to set a similarity of 10% to get it transparant

RE: Keyfile and pokeys
@Atlas Been over 7 years since I did a build myself but IIRC, when you use DX you’re limited to 32. When you use a matrix with keystrokes assigned, you can add way more inputs on one board.

@Stevie thanks! I have a couple of the Avi-8 timepieces, really like them.

RE: SteamVR lag & stuttering
@Focaldesign said in SteamVR lag & stuttering:
Think I found it.
Looking back at my screenshots I noticed the 5GHz- 130Mbps next to the wifi logo. It used to say a lot higher Mbps. So I pulled out the entire usb-c to ethernet adapter and noticed VD was still working in the settings as in the screenshot.
So I’m guessing the entire adapter is broken and it switched back to wifi instead of actual ethernet connection/speeds; as wifi isn’t the best around here, that might be giving insufficient bitrates while the fixed 100Mbs setting is then having issues.Suspicion confirmed. Ordered & tested a new adapter and now power & signal are coming through. Solid 90 FPS without budging. Happy camper.

RE: SteamVR lag & stuttering
@oleuzop hmm, could be. Let’s hope a new update comes soon so I can rule that out or find out it’s fixed.
