RE: Growing a VFW in 2017
Wish I could. Looks like fun. My lousy (.4mbps) DSL would just frustrate everyone else I’m afraid…

RE: Losing MFDs & HUD when switching from cockpit to outside view and back
Same here.
Was there for me before U2 also. Not regularly occurring, which is of course frustrating. I’ve gotten to where, when I feel that temptation to “take a look-see”, I resist it

RE: How do you make a campaign nowadays?
make sure you have your Groundwork correct…i.e. paths, links etc…!!!
Yes, from a quick look a TacEdit today it appears the original authors used what I know as a Navigational Graph, with weighted edges - and I’ll be that setting that up is a finicky bit. Thanks again.

RE: How do you make a campaign nowadays?
Well I didn’t say it applies to bms
No, you did not. The link was very helpful, thank you again.
So, after an initial look at TacEdit today, and given that it was compiled 13 years ago, surprisingly - it worked! Or seemed to. Whomever wrote it did a great job but I’d like to improve things if I can. With that…

RE: How do you make a campaign nowadays?
well if there is something it will be here:http://tactical.nekromantix.com/wiki/doku.php?id=falcon4
Thanks Arty,
Think I’ve seen that site before but assumed the info was not applicable to the BMS version.
Feels like there’s something that I’m unaware of, concerning modding this sim; beyond the obvious issue that it wasn’t designed to be [easily] modded.
Maybe because it’s just such a niche product; I’ve recently written some tools to pull apart Microsoft FSX/P3D BGL files for use in a GUI tool and it felt similar - takes a bit of digging and such; without someone doing the initial Yak-shaving (to come up with the file structure) I doubt I’d be able to do it in any reasonable time…
Anway, so here’s the ‘plan’:
- Crawl into the rabbit hole of binary file parsing (using the info provided by that site Arty listed)
- When I feel I have enough to do something useful, come back here and see what people want from a campaign editor (still have yet to examine the tools at that site)
- Go back in and try and do it.
Smooth Rides,

RE: How do you make a campaign nowadays?
Is there any documentation on the file structure of campaign files?
Saw this thread and have decided to actually ask this question too (as it has been on my mind for a long time)
From Googling this a while I’d say the answer to my question is , “No”, but had to ask anyway.
I ask cuzz, well, I’m an old retired guy now (which means I have the time); have written a few ‘middle-ware’ geographically-based GUI apps for aviation ‘stuff’ (all from scratch; it seems it’s all I ever do - I have a lot of code for this already written). Was going to work with someone on another sim but had to pull out (death in the family and months of ugliness associated; that sim also had no “legs” IMO; yadda, yadda, but I digress)…
And yes, I’m probably crazy - I know this would be a big task. I’ve no intentions of writing a tool for theatre creation. Only interested in campaign editing. Seems there are no tools for this, specifically that is.
Any background would be appreciated.
I’ve enjoyed this sim since it was in 4-color mode (on a Tandy 1000, I think it was); love what BMS has done (thank you again, and again) and would like to give something back.
JR
PS: Somewhere, way-back, I found a copy of the Falcon source code: the .mak file is dated 1999 so I’m sure that’s obsolete (but may help); would like something more applicable to BMS.

RE: Ff you could have one thing in the next update it would be…
Ok, I’ll bite, how about: Hot chicks waiting for us when we RTB?
-
RE: This Sucks
This sim isn’t for everyone. And no, I’m not an elitist. Far from it. Ninety-nine percent of the ‘entertainment software’ out there is not for me. Doesn’t make them worthy of negative feedback on my part. Read the manual. Ask questions (as you’d like them presented to you). And, eventually, you’ll come to love it. Or not.

RE: Norton Anti-Virus Security Threat
To me, Norton is a virus.

RE: Having trouble with aerial refueling is this normal?
Try talking to yourself.
Really.
Say, while watching the lights…Forward light is yellow, “littttlllle poweeeerrr”; Drifting left, “eaaaazzzeee righhhhtttt”.
Seemed to help me when I transitioned to the Hornet refueling; Viper didn’t take too long, but the Hornet had me cussing. Perhaps because I’ve got this thing sticking in my face to distract me. Dunno.
Wife thinks it’s cute I talk to my computer. And practice.
Some sticks seem to be better for this than others too. I use a CH stick due to overall quality, but, I had a Logitech G-something that, while not as well made, had a little pressure point just off center that made small corrections easy. The CH, to me, is easier to over-control with. But I use it anyway due to the aforementioned quality.
BMS Falcon Is Never Boring

RE: "Read The Manual" replies
R’g TFM is part of what this simulation is about.
To those who put in the huge effort to create the documentation, and those who take the time to answer questions - thank you.
If someone asks a question that, to you, seems obvious or easily researched, then why bother spending electrons towards implicating their apparent “shortcomings” - what does this say about you?
I find this question related to one I have internally, when I see the “Zero post” warnings; my first thought is, “ya know, when I have a question I try to find the answer on my own - thus reducing my contribution to the ‘noise’ that is the internet”. Resulting in a low ‘post count’ on my part.
And yes, I’m boring at parties. And not likely to have my own reality series on TV.

RE: 4.33u1 Issues (Known or not)
That was it…in keeping with all those Mil. Channel shows I’ve watched over the years, “…slam it forward at touchdown, in case of bolter”. Forgot about the shift-k thingie, thanks.
-
RE: 4.33u1 Issues (Known or not)
Same here. First recovery (yesterday) no problem. Just now: 3 traps in a row and each time I think “it” thought I was going to launch - unable to taxi. Had to relaunch. Just hit escape on the fourth one to exit. Not a big deal really. Great work. Again!

Missing HSI Mode Switch
Loving the theatre!
In the F16CM50 (and maybe others, haven’t performed an exhaustive check) the HSI mode switch is missing. It’s there in the KTO theater however. A search on the above isn’t yielding any help. Any ideas? Discovered this (after many other missions) while trying to use the TACAN. All I see is a blank panel - not a hole, a blank rectangular hunk of [virtual] metal where the HSI switch normally is.
Thanks

RE: Help with the Campaign
It’s tuff to explain, and a bit hackneyed for sure but it’s, “as real as it gets”. I find myself in awe at the people who do this for a living; they are, in essence, specialists: A2G, and A2A, with the former even more delineated. With 4.33 it really stuck out to me: I wanted to learn TFR “stuff” (add it to my resume, if you will) ; proved that that there are so many moving parts to this that it’s kinda crazy for someone to think they could [easily] master all of it (again, A2A and A2G). The campaign drives it home. Trying to be a master of it all is really going to take work. A lot of it. Get good at one thing, then stick to that. Of course setting a few options in the campaign helps: difficulty and PAKS, see the help files. I love it. Nothing can touch it. Good luck.

RE: F18 bug BMS 4.33
[Waveydave],
Feeling your pain. Spent HOURS on this lately. Boom AR (F16) isn’t a big deal. This Boom-Vs-Probe thing though had me in a lather too. Most consistent results come from:
After clearance Pre-Contact Posn, turn OFF cockpit (“1” key) and fly using the lights in HUD only view. Once you get the F/A & U/D lights quiet, hold it there for a few seconds while the boomer stabs you. Then keep holding it. As your video mentions, not only are the lights harder to see (no matter the airframe) but, it seems, in the Hornet (and Harrier & Tornado) you can’t see them at all when you are in the correct position due to the canopy bow. So, this way, with the obstructions removed, it turns into ‘normal’ boom refueling.
NOTE: I don’t have the TrackIR gizmo that allows your head to translate left/right/fwd/back.
PS: And it feels to me as though the Hornet (and others), probably/possibly due to the FM’s, accelerate a bit quicker, thus making small throttle adjustments more difficult.

RE: Post your BMS 4.33 Screenshots here!
Ah, it’s was 1993 (or thereabouts); low-level, high-speed - DA’s Tornado. Finally, I get to do it all over again!
