    • Ramp start, checklists, and training manual

      Hi everyone,
I’m new to Falcon BMS, but was so thrilled to see it’s revival from Falcon 4.0, which I enjoyed some decades ago.

I’m a little embarrassed to ask this. I’m having trouble with the ramp start. I’m working through the first training mission and it’s documentation. The training manual suggests to follow the checklist, but (as you all know) the manual then proceeds to give a bit more detail and explanation.

However, the process in the manual is very different and in a different order in many places than the checklist startup process. So, I turned to youtube and found even more ways of doing the ramp start.

So my question(s) is/are, why is the procedure different between these two documents? What is the correct and definitive source for performing the ramp start procedure? I could be wrong about the checklists, but they do seem to be the “do-list” type, defining the procedure, rather than the do-the-flow-then-check-the-essentials type. So, that wouldn’t explain the differences.

No idea why I get myself stuck on things like this, but… here I am! Any help appreciated. And if the answer is “relax and pick something that works”, so be it. It just doesn’t seem to be the character of this heavily documented sim.

      Thanks very much!

EDIT to thank the BMS team for keeping this sim alive!

@kenguan For whatever it’s worth (and this may be beside the point you’re trying to make), the Korea Basic Employment Manual has info on basic aerobatics around page 3-48. I realize that’s not the training missions, per se, but in case it helps…

@Coral36 Thank you. I think that makes sense to use the checklists as the gold standard. Having tried it as a newbie, though, I’m finding problems I can’t explain (certainly user error). So, I think I will have to sort of follow along the training until I can figure out how the checklists have to be implemented to prevent such problems. Good idea about the refuel… will save it for the future!

    • target options

I have created a bunch of TEs I use for training various things. I would like to start dialing in some of my GP bombing a bit and am looking for target options I could plop into a TE somewhere.

Is there any way to put down some flat ground items in a TE to create a target range similar to KOTAR? The nice flat target layout makes judging your progress (or lack thereof) easy.
      Thanks!

    • RE: Add / adjust tanker track in campaign

Thank you all! This one is solved.

@Quasi_Stellar and @Trigger, Yep, I think the distance from the FLOT was the key – Thanks guys! I had tried keeping it back into friendly territory from the FLOT, but I guess not far enough. Interestingly, once I got it working, I “clicked around” testing different distances from the FLOT as the package target, and I don’t see an exact pattern for what distance it needs. But great to know that’s the key anyways.

@JollyFE Yea, I’m looking forward to refueling right after takeoff now! HQ wasn’t making it too easy for me to do that when I was letting them run the show with tanker placement!

Thanks again - really appreciate this community.

@jack-jalek Agree with Fisgas videos for great explanations! Also, on Stevie’s youtube is another playlist of a great established simmer going through most of the training missions.

I used (and still go back to) both Stevie and Fisgas together with the training manual and found the 3 to compliment each other well.

      Best of luck!

    • Add / adjust tanker track in campaign

      Hello,
In the campaign I’m working through now, I have one airbase where I control all of the squadrons myself (not HQ). Using Mission Commander, I added a refueling squadron of 4 KC-10’s at that airbase, so that I could add some tanker tracks that are not so far away (as the auto-generated ones).

I have added other tankers in TE’s and so forth with good success. However, in this campaign, when I try to add a package for a tanker to orbit, I can select a tanker from my new group. But when I try to finalize creating the tanker package, I get an error saying that it could not create waypoints.

I am not having luck finding other guidance on this particular problem in the docs. Does anyone know if making your own tanker tracks is achievable (and if there is any trick)? Or is it possible to somehow select the auto-generated(HQ) tracks and adjust the tanker location? I feel like I must be missing something obvious -OR- it’s intentionally not possible.

      Thanks for any thoughts.

    • RE: target options

From the lack of answers, and from my continued search, it seems there is no easy way to do this. I assume it has to be built into the theater. Not sure I’m prepared to get into that.
      Safe flying!

@Dan Thanks very much, Dan. This is a really nice document and makes it very easy to follow the process in the trainings. I printed it out in booklet form and it’s gotten me further than I’ve gotten before, for sure. Thank you for sharing this – very beginner friendly!
