Sorry for the lateness in this one, I haven’t had any time for BMS lately
Version 11 updates:
- Merged BMS Basic 4.36 keyfile changes
Sorry for the lateness in this one, I haven’t had any time for BMS lately
Version 11 updates:
Thank you! I wish time zones permitted me to fly more with UOAF - I’ve only attended one event (suffered a blue-on-blue incident) but would love to join more.
@dee-jay well based on time zone it’s still KTO… but the time change button has moved!
I’d be interested too, but sounds like @Khronik got the codec working in Vegas, not necessarily figured out why playback in BMS isn’t working as expected.
@musf at a guess, that’s a “limitation” of WDP/BMS and the F-4 relying on the F-16 avionics. Reading http://www.f-4.nl/f4_11.html as an example, or the F4E manual here, it seems to me only later models of the F-4 got VHF radio.
Page 1-43 of the manual describes the AN/ASQ-19 as only operating on UHF.
So, I’m pretty sure the F-4 modelled in BMS does not have any VHF radios. Technically you shouldn’t be able to communicate on VHF at all, but because it’s using the F-16 avionics it will load the DTC and VHF preset, and that’s why you can use the VHF radio on the preset but not change it.
@khronik I don’t have the exact parameters but from memory MP3 licensing prevented the codec’s inclusion into software - might be why Vegas/Premiere don’t have it included.
When I (rarerly) need to convert between formats I use https://ffmpeg.org/ - you should be able to convert your AVI with a CLI command with the right parameters.
Alternatively if you can’t be bothered with CLI, https://handbrake.fr/ is another good option. It includes the MP3 encoder.
@musf I’m under the impression the F-4 doesn’t have a VHF radio. If you check the docs for the F-4 it only shows UHF switches.
@mj3437 Can you check if the theatres are listed in the Falcon BMS 4.35\Data\TerrData\TheaterDefinition\theater.lst
file?
@cag Windows 7 is out of support with no security updates for almost 2 years
You might be able to run the python code directly like @RUSHER0600 suggested, but I’d consider upgrading to Windows 10.
Version 10 updates:
For a long time, the recommendation has been to run Falcon in windowed (borderless or otherwise). I don’t know if this has changed with DX11, but I do see a borderless setting inside the 2D client now.
Falcon is a pretty old piece of software and it doesn’t do Alt+Tab or Alt+Enter switching very gracefully.
You can work around this by running windowed all the time and using the Windows magnifier while you navigate the 2D interface.
I wish I’d known that flying in multiplayer was far easier than flying alone. Trying to babysit AI, or even keeping formation when you can’t ask “lead, say airspeed” or “where the hell did you go?” is so much harder than speaking to someone.
Not to mention that Falcon Lounge makes it so easy to get into MP without committing to a squadron (thanks, Max!) and the community especially on Discord is quite welcoming and understanding.
Also, while I like reading the manuals, I understand they can be daunting. But you don’t need to know everything - go through the Tutorial manual and fly along with the missions in-game. You don’t need to RTFM back-to-back to get in the air - but it’s an incredible reference for debriefing after a sortie and trying to understand what went wrong or how to do better next time.
@afk:
hi
Edit falcon bms.cfg and add the additional lines from my add to falcon bms.cfg file,
question 1
So that’s means add code “from my add to falcon bms.cfg file” at the end of bms.cfg?
Yep!
@afk:
question 2,
Orffen Basic T16000M+TWCS.key
Orffen Basic T16000M+TWCS TRIM.key
what’s the difference between these two files?
which one should I load?
The bindings use a shifted layer to allow us to map more buttons than we physically have on the HOTAS. The difference between these 2 files is which function is mapped to the unshifted joystick POV hat. The TRIM version has the top hat used for trim (rarely used in the Viper except for when your ordnance is unbalanced). The other version has the top hat used as TMS. In both version the alternate mapping is available in the shifted layer (hold the PINKY SWITCH DX SHIFT button and then use the hat).
You can use whichever you prefer - I find the TMS unshifted is more useful as I use it more often than trim.
@afk:
question 3,
Any config with T.Flight Rudder Pedals works?
Yes! The rudder pedals are just axes, so you map them as you map your stick and throttle.
Sorry Orffen - just seen your response to my original post before I edited it to change the question as you had answered the first one in an earlier response on this thread.
Its arrived so will have a go tonight. Thanks again - already seen I cant use the hat on the throttle without mods so looking forward to sorting that.
Instructions are in the first post - you just need to add some lines to ‘falcon bms.cfg’. This will allow it to use the hat on the throttle.
You can’t use this keyfile with the alternative launcher, you should just launch using the regular launcher instead.
Just wanted to thank you Orffen for putting this together.
T.16000M Flight Pack just been delivered so will try the install/setup from your first post tonight.
I am new to BMS (few weeks) - what is the difference between the TRIM key file and the other one - is it just layout?
No problem! The TRIM file is a different option. In that file, the top hat on the stick will trim the aircraft while if you use it while holding the PINKY SHIFT button it will be the TMS commands. I find I use TMS much more than trimming in the Viper so I prefer the other file. It’s all down to personal preference

Version 9 updates:
You’ve got “Window” selected in the Alternate Launcher. Click that button to change it from white to grey.
Do note that it’s recommended to run Falcon BMS in windowed mode - you will likely get crashes in full screen.
The 2D interface is always 1024x768; you can press WinKey and +, or Ctrl+Alt and use the mouse wheel to turn on Windows magnifier to easier see the 2D interface. I’d recommend tuning the magnifier settings to your liking (I like mine to keep the mouse cursor centered).
Version 8 updates:
My hopes are on you for a 4.35 compatible version
Unfortunately, I’m out of my office at the moment until mid-January, so no HOTAS to be able to test this until then.
Edit 2: after writing the below realised that of course there are new key files for BMS 4.35; Zip has been updated!
Does the .key file not load in 4.35? The release notes and New Keyfile Functions.txt don’t show anything removed/changed that previously existed, so I think you should be able to load the .key file, setup your axes and get in the air
Edit: I just had a quick look at the technical manual and doesn’t look like anything has changed for the config file values for multiple devices either. Don’t forget to add those config file entries. Let me know if you’re seeing issues importing the .key file; I can re-do them off the base 4.35 .key files if needed.
