I have just taken a brief look at the -34 manual for 4.34. There is now a section (1.4) that has a much fuller breakdown of the operation of the FCR. The manual on this thread is probably now much more supplementary interest with this new addition to the documentation.

Is terrain modelled for enemy aircraft radar? In the original Falcon 4 book there was a diagram showing AMBUSHCAP behind a mountain - however I didn’t think that the radar in Falcon 4 had any form of radar shadowing. I remember sometime ago the shadowing was discussed in in the context of GM/SP mode…but of course that is not RWS/TWS etc. Does anyone know if terrain is modelled for AA radar?

I created the attached to help me. It is in Excel so I could use it anywhere w/o issues of installation etc. Very simple, but has helped a lot.

Thanks. I figured that out today. A-A mode does not cool them by default, but MSL and DGFT modes do!
And for AIM9 turn up the volume. You don’t want to be in engagement with a Mig-23 when you are being told to shoot and you say you don’t have a f*ckin tone as you didn’t turn up the volume!

I really enjoyed this book, and helped immensely with my flying generally. What it made me realise more than anything else is the importance of AoA. The author gives a great example of where the Wright Brother’s Flyer had a flag at the end of pole so that they could see the angle of attack. Those boys new a thing or two about flying that was promptly forgotten.

it is always a bit disapointing to see people refering to some public simplified information like Code One magazine when BMS provides much more detailed explanations
i wonder if people have read our articles ?
I remember reading this article when it was first published. it is SUCH a good summary that IMHO it is required reading if you want to understand the WHY of a deep stall. Simply excellent document.

IMHO:
Korea is good due to the short distances to travel to FLOT (not played ITO, but that looks fun).
I have been playing Balkans and having a blast.
I have not done much Multiplayer, but the small amounts I did were well worth it. I was flight lead and it increased the workload significantly (and it was a simple TE too). I’ll put it this way: I am impressed when people in RL do missions comms out!BMS is always an F-16 sim, and hence I spend 90% of my time in that. I have flirted with the F/A-18 because carrier landings looked fun, but I have not fought a long campaign (the ramp start is kludged - good but kludged) so that kind of spoils it for me (there is no DED in the F/A-18). I have also whisked the Harrier away for a cheeky practice sortie - somehow that feels much more real it terms of RAMP and avionics so I might go there and fly low and try not to shoot my own ground units!

Me larking about in the Harrier. It was a familiarisation sortie - the Balkans has some lovely valleys to fly down. I am getting to the point of thinking of starting a Harrier campaign.

RE: More mission editing questions
Certain weapons force a TGP but you should be able to add a TGP otherwise. Loadout is locked at T-4:00.
I have started playing Command Naval/Air Operations. It is interesting some of the features of turn around time being much less than in Falcon 4 (and possibly in BMS).

4 hours seems a long time to wait when you want to change the munitions on a jet - however the argument above gives a good reason.
Note: i don’t think that we should adopt 4 hour lock down in BMS! This is a point of interest more than anything else.

RE: Harrier
I have flirted a little bit with the fa-18 - obviously not telling my trusty F-16 that I sometimes like to go to sea and fly another bird. I have written about this affair a little before.
However lo and behold - i think it time to try something else. So without telling either the fa-18 or the f-16 I sneaked off, and made a little Harrier TE.
What larks. A nice little nippy number. Great fun to do V/STOL, and fun in the Balkans theatre where there are some lovely valleys to frolic in. For some reason the incorrect avionics I don’t mind as much as the FA-18 (I know that is an unfair considering the effort people put in).
Recommended if you want some transonic fun.

I like the canopy sound, and I agree with the ticking before the JFS switches over - and watching real vids I was amazed that the ticking was there too… However what actually is causing the ticking? I cannot think of any relay that would.

I used to like that feature in TFX. I recall there being missions with stricter ROE, as you were not always in an all out war.

An interview with Dim Jones
an RAF pilot that flew F-16. Interesting as he is talking about flying the Block 5 - sounds very basic to us Block 50/52 types but clearly revolutionary compared to what he had flown before.Note Dim flew Hunters, Lightening, Phantom, F-16 and Jaguar. Pretty good mix I would say.

please can you explain the difference between “Sensor Point of Interest” and “System Point of Interest” ?
Fredf is semi correct. There is a Sensor of Interest, which is the highlighted boarder around the MFD that shoes this is where you FCC is taking input. The Sensor Point of Interest or System Point of Interest is where the sensor is pointing. It generates a delta to your steer point.

RE: You know when you are flying too much BMS when…
When you are driving along the motorway with excellent SA on what is going on and wondering why it seems so easy…and realising you are only driving in 2D space, at 70 kts with no RWR trilling away, no FCR to keep running over contacts, no AWACs to call, no wingmen to manage, no fuel…etc etc etc.

Stagnation, compressor stalls etc.
The reason for this, I was watching Air Crew Interview the other day and it was an interview with Kurt Schroeder who was the chief test pilot for Grumman and the F-14. He discussed the interview the problem with the original F-14 engines that if you were not careful stagnate when lighting rehear as the pressure spike when they lit would pass back through the engine.
