Solved Alternative launcher is asking for admin rights
-
Hi,
I encountered a problem when trying (for the first time) the alternative launcher on the latest BMS version (4.37.3).
When launched as standard user, I had an error that it can’t access to a registry key. I debuggued with procmon and found my problem : alternative launcher is trying to access “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Benchmark Sims\Falcon BMS 4.37” wih “read/write” rights.
So, I “fixed” the problem on my side by adding write access to users to this specific registry key. However, I’m wondering why the alternative launcher is trying to access this registry key with write rights and I’m wondering if it’s correct.
Either it’s not correct and the laternative should just try to access this key with reading rights
or, if it needs to change things there, maybe it’s not the correct place and it should go in “HKEY_CURRENT_USER” ?Very important : Please note I installed BMS on Windows sandbox, then I moved folders and registry keys in the native Windows. I asked some friends about the admin rights and they don’t need to launch alternative launcher with administrator rights, which means :
maybe they launched it as admin only once, and the admin rights allowed to change the registry key rights
or
the BMS installer is setting the registry key rights like I did manually so the users can have right access, which is maybe something not correct.Anyway, not a big deal, nothing urgent but maybe a small thing to adjust in order to make things cleaner. In any case, thanks a lot for the huge job made for BMS wrt. Falcon 4.0.

This is obviously not supported – install the software in the OS as intended. The installer updates registry key permissions, as you’ve discovered.

@Chaussette this (registry key permission problem) was a bug with the initial launch of 4.37.3 … as I recall it was corrected within hours, by an updated installer which fixed it
if you downloaded and kept a local copy (or obtained from torrent) that initial broken release of 4.37.3 … you should discard that and download a fresh
