New OS install SSD - Falcon on other HDD
-
Hi all,
I currently have a Win 8.1 machine, with Falcon 4.34 and original F4 on separate HDD. (see sig for spec)
I’m planning to upgrade to a new CPU, RAM, MB, etc and new SSD for Win 10 (ditching current C drive) but bringing over the other HDD as is. Presumably I would have to just delete the BMS and F4 installation folders off the other drive, and reinstall both. Still have a F4 CD with box and manual from back in the day!
Of course I will back up user files first
I’m guessing it’s not easy to just restore reg keys to point to folders holding BMS and f4.
Thx

Hm, while this should be possible I don’t think it’s advisable as the USB device order, display devices, monitors etc will all be different on the new system, so a fresh BMS installation shouldn’t take too long and will probably remove some of the old “crud” in the process.
Saving your “User” folder is a good idea though as you’ll keep your logbook, keyfiles etc, just don’t copy the entire folder back after the update but select the files you need.
All the best,
Uwe

Thanks Hoover, I figure I will just delete the install folders on my E: drive and install fresh. Won’t take long.

Since you’re not changing anything but the location that the program operates out of, you could use symlinks – a windows redirect function that allows any reference to the old location to point to the new location, including any registry keys, etc.
(Basically, when Windows sees “C:\Program Files\Falcon BMS” (very rough example) it will actually read “D:\My Other HDD\Falcon BMS”. You can find plenty of great guides by googling “How to create SymLink”.We all recently talked about this in another thread, Cloud9 and other made some good points. You either go the SymLink route, or you take the time to backup all settings/config files, uninstall, and reinstall to the new HDD. If you run into issues, try again, but after uninstalling, go around to the old locations, the Windows Registry, etc. and remove anything “BMS” or “Falcon” related, then do your reinstall to the new HDD location.
Best wishes!
