Controller Setup Issues
-
I flew Falcon 4 back when it first came out and still have my MicroProse CD from then. I have not flown it since then. I was helping with a script for BMS Falcon on the CH Hanger and got interested in the sim so I’ve downloaded and installed and updated to update 7. I’m running CH Fighterstick, Pro Throttle, Pro Pedals all USB and need some advice on what I’m seeing.
1. On the Setup -> Controllers page I can select each controller and the ball or bars move as they are supposed to move - roll, pitch on Stick, throttle on throttle, and rudder on rudder pedals. However, if I go into the sim with the tactical setup for ramp start and on the runway the control surfaces and throttle do not move.
Based on a post here I made sure the devices show up in DeviceDefaults.txt and the GUIDs are not commented out. I added the AXIS_* commands in the proper place and still no luck.
I found that if I go into the Advanced -> Flight Controls and assign the controls there they will all work (except for toe brakes). However, when I exit the sim the next time all the flight controls are reset to keyboard and I have to go through the process again. It seems like the settings are not being saved.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks.

As far as the flight controls resetting, same thing happened to me. What I did was make sure I started CH manager before I started falcon and that fixed my problem. Not sure what you are doing or why it’s not saving for you. It took me about 4-5 times of having to reset everything before I figured that out.
Has far as it not working in game, did you save everything after you got it working in the advanced tab control panel? Try this, set everything up in the advance tab, exit that tab and go back in and see if it’s still set up correctly.

I run with A WartHog, but to present it to Falcon as a “combined device” I need to start its “Target” software first.
If I don’t my throttle and radar cursors ministick go back to keyboard.

Control Manager is running and the map is downloaded.
Sorry, I wasn’t very clear about when it doesn’t work. If I start Falcon, set up the controls in advanced and then go fly everything works just fine. I hit the save on Setup -> Controller screen after clicking Ok on the Advanced screen. Then I can go into the came and it all works. If I exit the game, come back in the settings are not remembered so if I don’t go through the setup again the controls do not work. For some reason nothing gets saved and it does not recognize what’s in the DevicesDefault.txt file. Strange.
Normally CM doesn’t need to be running even if you combine devices since it does it differently then the WartHog (I have one of those, too <g>) but I’ve left it running as I’m developing the map.</g>

I know someone that had that problem with the same CH setup, he had to go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Falcon BMS 4.32\User\Config after setting up the controls and setting all keyfiles and joystick stuff to read only permission. Don’t know if it had to be done while BMS is minimized, so that it does not reset again.

Interesting. Mine is on my G drive and it seems to have finally stuck. I set the following to read only anyway so hopefully it will remember it. The only thing that might have fixed it is I added a controller with axis (it had only buttons before) and the DeviceDefaults file updated. I also added the axis= settings.
axismapping.dat
DeviceDefaults.txtI note the comment in DeviceDefaults says that it’s ingame = physical but the example has it reversed. Edit to the edit - I just had to click reverse to reverse them. I did it in BMS but could have done it in the CM.
I’ll see if it sticks.
Thanks to all for helping.
Edit:
The toe brakes do not work when assigned to the CH Pedals left/right axis. The keyboard, k, works.
Edit:
Actually they do work. I just had to check the reverse in Falcon for them to work.

That is strange, my routine use to be this…
1. Start CH manager and download map
2. Start TrackIR, test it to make sure everything worked
3. Start BMS and go into setting to make sure everything worked and was saved
4. Fly…That worked fine for me for years. I would leave CH manager running because it only used a small amount of resources…it didn’t hurt anything.

In CH Control Manager the map file must be opened and downloaded. If you don’t download it, BMS settings will not see CH and all your settings need to be done all over again.
I have mine downloaded on start up so I don’t have to worry about it.
-
You are right. CM doesn’t take much in the way of resources. For some reason BMS saved it finally and remembers it.

Yes, the download is necessary <g>. I found the GUI did not have to be opened. BMS still sees them for me.</g>

Correct. Just put CMStart.exe in your startup folder and it will open automatically with Windows with the last profile you downloaded. Fire and forget. Always there to serve you.

Did that a long time ago <g>. Fires up the last map used and I’m ready to go.</g>

Is it working for you now or does it forget still?

As of a couple of hours ago it was still working.

Did you follow the start up procedure that we said?

Did you follow the start up procedure that we said?
Essentially I did.
Map was downloaded and I run cmstart.exe to activate the last map but that only applies when I login and all through this I’ve not logged out. During testing I downloaded before firing up BMS and still had failures.
When I start BMS I go into the Controller advanced and check. If it’s there I go fly.
Not sure what fixed it. After posting and getting the response about trying some more times (I’d already done 20 or so!) I set the values, repeated the save a few more times and it saved the settings. Exiting and reentering BMS the devices were remembered.
I also, just to be sure, followed OldGoat5’s post and changed the file permissions. My files are on the G drive so it’s not a protected location.
Now it remembers the settings. Not sure what fixed it. CM doesn’t make a difference if it’s running or not.

Glad it’s working for you and hope that it keeps working. I’d follow those procedures every time you are about to fly.

Thanks to all for the help.
So far so good. I’ll just keep checking the setup when I startup as it’s easier then getting into a mission and finding out the controls don’t work.
No to find some good guides on writing the missions. I notice the training missions can have scripts so I need to find out how to do that.
