IFF Error codes
-
Hi,
If I shut the jet down at the end of the mission and then restart, I get IFF error codes 131 and 046 (XP and INT No Keys), which will not clear. I have tried reloading the DTC and manually inputting the relevant M1, M3 and M4 codes for the correct time as per the Pre Flight Briefing. (I believe the M2 code remains constant and is tied to the individual aircraft?)I have tried with the IFF switch set to Standby and Norm, but with no joy so far. Any suggestions as to where I’m going wrong would be greatly appreciated.
I’m having a lot of fun trying to get my head around the nuts and bolts of the IFF…Its great!

Place the IFF Master switch to STBY.
Place the M-4 CODE switch to HOLD momentarily prior to placing the IFF MASTER knob to OFF or removing power so both code settings can be retained after flight, (landing gear has been cycled) . -
Many thanks Leech. I will give it a go later on when I next fire up the sim. Very much appreciated.

The advice from Leech works like a charm…thanks again.
The solution to this problem has spurred me on to RTFM with a bit more diligence in future! I have now found the “book” answer. It is to be found in the CM-1, page 158, at the bottom of section 1.16.5 IFF use in back up mode.

Technically its not just backup operation
By default, the IFF crypto unit will indeed erase keys if it finds itself without any power after a landing gear cycle (aka after a flight) ; unless you tell it to ‘Hold’ the keys. IIRC that’s pretty common for airborne crypto equipments.

The only thing that the CM-1 fails to mention, is that the keys will be erased after a landing gear cycle. So, if you start up the jet and shut it down, the keys will not be erased.
