Assigning functions to the keyboard
-
Embarrassed to ask this grade 1 question, but, after a complete re install, I can’t remember how to assign a function to the keyboard via direct mapping ( which works fine with buttons on my hotas, but not with the keyboard, which I use for less important functions).
I go to Controllers in the UI Setup page.
I load my key file or “BMS-Full”.
I find say “Toggle Pilot Model” and click on it. The default key is alt s but, I want just “s” to toggle the pilot model instead.
I click on “s” on my keyboard.
Nada! The default key press wont change.
What am I doing wrong?

Wow, that’s quite an opus. Thank you for the link. I’ll study it although I somehow managed previously to directly assign ( a few) keyboard keys through the UI without editing key files.

Have you tried Chihirobelmo’s Alternative Launcher? https://github.com/chihirobelmo/FalconBMS-Alternative-Launcher

I actually haven’t because BMS direct assignments generally worked very well for me. And to tell you the truth I’m nervous of porking my install again. Or is his Alternative Launcher, which looks complicated, a must have?

It is a very useful tool, but it is certainly not essential. Comes down to the user, and their preferred way of doing things. Unlike some PC Games, it’s not so common to remap keys in BMS, since they have pretty much every key covered many times with multiple functions and keypress combos. Usually the goal is to merely integrate additional controllers and assign their buttons to BMS actions - this can be done manually such as that Keybinds editing guide, or through other means, and Alternative Launcher is one of those.

This is even more embarrassing to admit but my problem was my not using the supplied BLANK Keymap. One can assign the functions to any button or key stroke here. Sigh. One of the many attractions of BMS is that one never stops learning.
