Tell me how not to fail!

I’m pretty nooby at the game but trying my hardest to get better.
I’ve been doing lot’s of campaign play recently, now I get a lot of CAP missions which is all fine, I coldstart my jet taxi and off I go……
Now, the briefing says perform CAP ops at steers 4 and 5 for 30mins, I assume this mean hover between the two?
I do just that keeping an eye on the flight I’ve been assigned as cover for and get a few kills 29’s/23’s and the likes.I soon find I am getting low on juice or am winchester, the flight I was assigned has done it’s job and gone home, I head off myself, land and exit.
FAIL!, I didn’t stay in the assigned area apparently, and in the last one got a ‘horrible’ rating even though I downed 3x 29’s, 2x 21’s, and a Q5 with guns (slippery little bugger)
What am I doing wrong?

Did you ask AWACS for relief? AWACS will tell you when you can leave.

I didn’t no o.O, seem’s I’m missing important bits….
Spent hours last ngiht sifting through each page of the BMS manual and didnt find anything…
Just dug out my old boxed game and looked in that manual(before I realised it’s in the game install duh), and yep as you said…“Request relief is a very important AWACS call. BARCAP (Barrier Combat Air Patrol) and DCA
(Defensive Counter Air) missions require you to stay on station for a specific period of time. If
you leave before that time expires without permission from AWACS, you will not successfully
complete your mission. Request relief asks AWACS if you can leave your BARCAP or DCA
location and return to base.”Appears my noob meter was bouncing off the end on this one, I shall go test it now

When you set your flight up, click on the first steerpoint of you CAP, change it to a figure like 00:01 that way you’ll only be tasked to be in that track/CAP area for one minute. Also do the same for subsequent STPT’s marked as CAP.
Good luck.

It’s not fair that you weren’t told the spec. By default you have to remain within 25nm of either of the two BARCAP points. The “clock” pauses when you wander away and continues when you come back so you can briefly exit and return. If you’re unsure about the time, ask AWACS for relief. You’ll never get a left station early penalty if they give approval. Of course setting your CAP time to a low value also ensures you’ll fulfill it.

Or….if you stay in area, use your “Time Hack” timer so you know when you’re good to go.

I also set the exit steerpoint as current and when the on-time caret rises to 300-400kt I fly that speed toward it.

All work’s well now, editing the station time and req relief fixed it
Although I just got owned lol, got blinkered into a pair of mig23’s 25miles out and never even saw the two mig29 scramblers 2 miles under me until……
archer inbound! archer inbound! the 3rd one got me
