      I folks.

I downloaded free-track to use as my viewing input instead of having to use the keyboard.
As was recommended by another website, I bought a PS3 webcam and it works great on any webcam software except that free-track won’t recognize it and causes free track to crash. I’m using the codelab’s driver and have found out that free-track requires an extra patch file for that setup.

It is no longer offered on the free-track website and the file hosting services that most folks linked to back in 2012 or so no longer have it either.

Does anyone have the patch file?

      Thank you for your help,

It’s better to try FaceTrackNoIr with the pointtracker plugin.
        Stable and in development.

Actually, I found the patch that I needed and it seems to be working quite well. I don’t have my headset made yet, but the camera is able to work with freetrack and it does see my 1.5v battery powered 940nm led with no problems.

Once I get my headset made, I’ll tool around with it and maybe go try FaceTrackNoIR with the plugin.

          Thank you for the suggestion

Did you mess the ps3 camera for the infa red lenz or was it not needed?

I placed a piece of floppy disc in front of the camera. No issue at all

Yes. Pulling the case apart was a royal pain. I’ve seen consumer gun safes that are easier to get into. Once you take the screws out you have to use a small screw driver and pry the living heck out of it all the way around the edge. Then pull. I was surprised at how difficult it was to get that little bugger opened.

Then use a brand new, very sharp Exacto-knife to cut around and pry out the retaining ring. Just below that is a piece of glass that is about 3/16" thick. Use the knife to cut around the outer edge and sort of pry it up. A little on one side, then the other, then back. Rinse and repeat until its all the way out. It took me about 30 minutes from start to finish but I could probably cut that in half now that I know what I’m doing.

Oh ya, wear safety glasses. The IR Filter is an actual piece of glass and when you pry on it, it tends to chip and crack and the pieces go flying in all directions.

When I got it working again, I had a piece of diskette taped to the front of the lens. Don’t bother as it doesn’t work. Just remove the ir filter, then set the gain and exposures and turn the blue and green to zero.

All I did to test was to connect a loose LED (940nm) to a 1.5v battery with alligator clips and place it in front of the camera. I was able to resolve a nice round circle of bright red within the free-track interface. So, on to making my headgear.

There is an issue. The floppy disc is an IR Pass filter, or you could call it a short wave rejection filter. There is an IR rejection filter within the lens. While its not a big deal if you’re using the shorter wave IR leds in the low 800Nm wave, it will seriously attenuate anything above 880Nm or so. You probably won’t get good detection with the more invisible waves.

I thought it was very cool when I first tried it with the unmodified camera. The 940Nm Led is totally invisible to the naked eye. Not even a hint that its on but when seen with the unmodified camera, you could see a faint purple glow coming from the led. But it was very faint. The modified camera with the ir filter removed shows it VERY bright like looking at the sun. You have to actually turn down the gain to resolve a nice circle.

Ok guys usefull info you provided here…Let’s go for a conclusion please :-)So:
1.are there any drivers for win 8.1 or win 7 for ps3eye?
2.Is it better to modify or not the camera with an IR filter? (Such as floppy disk etc)
Of course i’m refering to the FaceTrackNoIr software (with track clip)and NOT free track
                              3. Is there a BMS profile for the software available??
                              Thx in advance 🙂

                                1. the CL drivers (are very cheap) works well in Win8.1 and Win10.
                                2. I bought the delan clip and he sell his system with an already modified PS3 camera, or if you have your own camera he send some IR filter (I had a pair of 3D glasses, the one with red and blue lenses). In my case I used a piece of floppy put on the camera and works very well.
                                3. I use the default one with little modification. As soon as I can I will post here.

                                  UPDATE:
Well, I have all the software working well, my new problem is that the playstation eye camera I purchased (a whopping $4 on ebay) is the WRONG PLAYSTATION camera. Apparently there are more than one (two?) versions of this unit and they look identical from a quick inspection of the outside. My camera was model SLEH-00448 so don’t buy it on ebay!!! The IR filter can not be removed.

Tried my wife’s webcam (radioshack garbage gigaware) but it apparently has some very strong IR filtering because I can not get my leds to show up on the camera if they are further than 5 or 6 inches away. Tried the floppy disk thing, tried using a lab grade power supply (constant current/constant voltage) to over-drive the leds just a bit, but no success. I can get the leds to show up, but not if I hold them further than 5 inches from the camera lens.

So now I’m on the hunt for a camera that works.

                                  Anyone have any suggestions?

I use the "3 led target " model attached to the side of my headphones . You must input accurate dimensions into Freetrack then play with the curves to get the desired result inFBMS.

I have about a dozen of these safety shield head gear assemblies. I have mounted my led’s to it and put all the resistors and associated wires under the large plastic piece. I almost forget I’m wearing it.

If you use FacetracknoIR with the Freetrack plugin it has a auto calibrate feature you can use for this. I now use FacetracknoIR in conjuction with my home made 3 LED clip and I find it better than the Freetrack software.
