Campagin tips

I started a KTO campaign a few weeks ago (the one where the North invades at first, then you have to repel them and capture Wonsan, Pyongyang and Hamhung) and am now in day 3 10am or so. Outlook is excellent, I already got to see the video of “Russia” entering the conflict (maybe I misheard it, but I’m pretty sure it was Russia), and since then both enemy air and ground activity has picked up quite a bit.
Blue has already captured Wonsan (how can I tell if the capture is “complete”? The airbase east of the city is still red, for example, though at status zero) and it looks like Hamhung is next on list up North. I was wondering how to proceed from here, I’m really anxious to fight this campaign (and hopefully win it) to the end, so for most of the time I’ve taken over Prio mgmt myself, reducing naval, infrastructure and CCC strikes to near zero and only taking out specific targets that were bugging my myself, using a self-managed squadron operating out of Seosan (for instance the DPRK withdrawal started once I took out some pesky HQ batallion that had advanced south).
I’m still mostly flying interdiction mssions (using JSOWs I’ll freely admit for the pure fun of employing them), and using Seosan I can mostly bingo with enough fuel to make it back to base using a single bag of centerline fuel (I usually equip the AI with 2 bags though because of their horrific fuel management). ECM pod hasn’t been necessary anymore for quite some time (prio one during day 1 were SEAD operations), so I’ve given up the music pod for the extra bag of fuel that’s quite convenient at times.
Now I’m wondering how to ensure my ground forces don’t “lose it” now that we’re only a few days away from winning the campaign. Blue ground forces are still quite far away from Pyongyang, so I guess we’ll reach Hamhung quite some time before Pyongyang is within reach, so any advice would be very welcome here.
Thanks in advance,
Uwe

Fly missions with “successful” rating. The initative, moral depends on a scoring system which uses many imputs, this is how was achieved that player’s performance has impact on strategical level either. The dynamic camapign is a very complex RTS which runs in the background while you act in it.
Every city what your forces capture gives suppy points and as I can remember initative pts either but A.S can tell more about the system.

Since I fly mostly interdictions most if not all of my missions have received “excellent” ratings, so I think I’m good on that side of the equation. Also I turned down the infrastructure strike prio to 0 as to avoid breaking / burning down bridges my forces would need to cross later.
Cheers & thanks,

Start manually moving your tanks to the cities you want to take over and FRAG flights to protect them. That will speed it up a bit. Sometimes AI is slow to get moving and needs a push. I don’t think they are as brave as WWII troops.;)
-
+1…had to manually move troops in the Israeli theater as well to take over a city.
-
Manually task constant OCA strikes to keep the red air force on the ground and your ground forces will continue offensive operations to victory.

Excellent is not a mission rating. That is a pilot performance rating.

Here is a tip - don’t do Korea strong Iron Fortress thinking you like a challenge, then choose a Block 30 before totally underestimating the oncoming onslaught. After congratulating myself on a good first mission I landed and my base was out of action about 5 mins later.
That was my last mission - fast forward to day 6 and the base never got repaired enough to take off.
Luckily on the next campaign the engine must have felt sorry for me because a flight of 8 Su-24s flew past me without escort. Don’t remember ever having so many gun kills !

So it’s ok to get an “Success: –- only minor damage…” report for the mission in question?
Uwe
-
Yeah, the ratings next to each pilot are performance of each pilot. The rating at the top of the debrief is how well the mission went. I don’t know if the rating bonus is determined by pilot performance or mission performance or if it is even that big a deal. Different versions of the game have made that a bigger or a smaller impact.
I’ve found the typical way to lose a campaign is to have your friendly airbases wiped out. It’s practically impossible to lose with airbases intact.

Thanks for your comments, Frederf.
I got a weird message yesterday, probably triggered by one of the blue batallions capturing South Pyongyang:
- First, I’m shown a video about KJU threatening the South with nuclear devices, rockets and so on
- Following that immediately, I’m getting a 2nd video about how US forces did a fantastic job and can go home proudly and so on.
Still, the campaign seems to go on, Wonsan is in blue hands, Hamhung is still on the red side and Pyongyang isn’t entirely captured by blue, either. What’s up? Will I receive a “proper” “campaign won” message once the hostilities are officially over of is that it?
Cheers, Uwe

that’s probably a bug, never seen it before personally. the second cinematic you saw was probably the victory cinematic, normally the behavior is it only plays if the campaign is won, and then the clock should stop and the last event should be the last “so and so battalion captures X” where x was the last objective you needed to capture to win.

Uwe
should be, you’ll get tons of those if you task interdictions, for whatever reason it always reports “minor damage” even if your 4 ship flight rolls a few tank battalions off the board.
what i assume it’s doing is tallying up all of the forces in the area (and if korea, that’s conservatively hundreds of vehicles, easily) and then if you kill 30 T-62s it thinks that’s only “minor damage” when in fact it’s a ludicrous kill ratio, especially if you are killing high-tier tanks near to’san or whatever.

Double check your logbook, does it show a campaign medal?

Thanks Dracfalcon & yay me
When I load my last save state (that was created after being shown both vids), the outlook still is “bleak”. Weird, but I don’t mind.
Thanks again for all your help and useful tips in this and other threads on how to go about one’s first campaign. It has been quite a ride and I was rather anxious to start one at first for fear of constant death and destruction, but it’s been terrific fun and very rewarding to go the “whole nine yards” and winning it.
Granted this was on “cadet” level, so which level should I tackle next and which difficulty sliders should I move over to the right for the next attempt?
If there’s interest I can sum up my experience in a little post, for posterity. (pun not intended ;))
All the best, Uwe

Congrats on winning your first campaign…many more to go!
