Finding IP Addy as host to give to clients
-
OK guys… can someone help me out here? It used to be, I could go to whatismyIP.com to get that number. Now… it returns something like this… Your Public IP Address: 2601:245:cf01:e570:116d:55d8:4es0:2r7d
I’ve been told that’s a IPv6, and what I’m looking for is the IPv4. I bought a new cable router/modem a while back to replace what I was renting from Comcast.
If using ipconfig from a command prompt, I see an IPv4 address and below that a default gateway (that both look normal) Is it this IPv4 address that I give to clients to connect to me in Comms?

Try this one, you can force the check to IPv4 only.

ipconfig will probably give you an ip address from your private network behind your router.
As ipv6 isn’t really all that common yet, simply use the quad (4 bytes) ipv4 address that whatsmyip.com or whatever lists.
cheers, uwe

That worked BlueRaven… thanks mate!

Be warned: if you’re already on IPv6 it may happen YOU can’t host a session. I experienced the problem that IPv6 connections are translated to an IPv4 which is shared with other Internet users connected to the same provider.
That means you can’t make a proper Port forwarding and that means no hosting, just connecting to a host as CS …

I just hosted a 2 player… all went well… IVC included… so the ip4.me is now my go-to! Thanks again BlueRaven!
