Script or target GUI?
-
I have made a profile using the target gui software, I found this easier than using script. Still have loads of spare commands left that I could utilise. On this forum I see most people have made a script, just wandering why. I thought about direct X commands but I don’t think there are as many slots for commands as target. what are the advantages of each method. just a little puzzled.

I was wondering the same thing. With the target gui I can get everything to work the way it should… I think… The only thing I can’t get working is “cursor enable”. I used to be able to shoot an AIM-120 “maddog” by holding it in and it doesn’t work any more. Going to have to RTFM to see if something changed… It takes some tweaking of the keyfile to get things to function properly. Thanks to Kolbe for his awesome keyfile editor! But I think for those such as myself who are not as familiar with script and how it works the gui can give you all that you need. I do not use any ‘shifted commands’ or a ‘second layer’ of commands like I used to with my old X45 and I don’t think that option exists within the target gui anyway.

Yes mad dog procedure has changed.
cursor enable plus ungage plus pickle -

yes you can use layers and shifted within layers. giving loads of command options.

Thanks badger! Most helpful! I don’t often fire an aim 120 maddog but it can be useful… in getting a court-martial! But it has saved my arse a time or two as well.
sub101 can you use a shited layer using the target gui? Or do you have to use script? I was under the impression that you could only achieve this with using script. If you can do it with using the gui i would like to know how to do it. I don’t need much more than what i have programmed, it would be nice to add some non-essential comands to the stick and throttle.

Strictly speaking firing an AIM-120 in bore only requires holding down uncage and weapons release buttons. The enable button requirement comes from the fact we tend to fly a round with the AIM-120 in slav. The cursor enable is the hands-on select for bore when in slav or slav when in bore but changing the option on the MFD page eliminates the need for the hands on select.
I have lite knowledge of the GUI side of TARGET, but I know it does utilize layers. In fact it must utilize as the GUI (which is simply a frontend that writes script for you) will always use the MapKeyIOUMD instead of the simpler MapKey command. Choosing what layers are active for a command simply requires highlighting the IO UMD buttons and defining which buttons control the layer shifting.

Yes Mapkey by itself ignores all shifting functions when programmed that way. MapkeyIO will have two different commands based on shifted or not shifted and MapkeyIOUMD will have six commands based on shifted or not shifted and the position of the throttle pinky switch.
These can be mixed and matched in a TARGET file. For example if you wanted weapons release to do nothing but weapons release then it is a Mapkey only and regardless of shift or not or pinky switch position that is all the weapons release would do is the one command it was assigned to do.

yes you can use a shifted layer or separate layers it is laid down in the manual how to do it. You have 3 layers Upper Middle and Down. within each layer you can use a shifted layer aswell if you like. I have used all 3 layers, but not needed a shifted layer. It needs a little tweaking but it works quite well. ie a spring return toggle switch could have JFS switch in (lower) landing gear Middle. Trim reset upper.@CoSho1:

Ah… yes, I see that in the Target manual.
Looks like I still have a RTFM problem!
Been flying Falcon since the 3.0 days and you would think I would have learned to RTFM by now!
Thanks sub101 I will look into this. -
I still have problems also, never stop learning. As soon as I do learn a new procedure or manual turns up.:D
