So what do I do with this Torrent stuff?
-
This time I decided not to wait for a mirror of the 4.33.1 installer (last time I had a loooong wait ) and DL’ed a tiny application called uTorrent.exe (some 1,9 MB). Before I do something stupid, could someone please give me a brief instruction how to handle the download as this is going to be my first torrent experience ever.
Thank you very much in advance!

Scrap uTorrent and use a more reliable software like Deluge.
Then, after your Torrentclient has been installed, open the .torrent file with it and watch the download bar progressing. When download is made leave your Torrentclient open as long as possible to seed BMS to other users.

Yep.

Adware, what a few belly dancers and girls who life near Me who are bored.
Give me the adds……Seriously you begrudge a few adds for the people writing free software, who puts food on your table?
:munch:

Bit Torrent? Works fine here.

it’s not the adds in utorrent that is the problem
utorrent was designed from the start to be a light weight but powerfull torrent client. nowadays it is anything BUT that.
adware slows it down tremendously, the RAM usage on utorrent is off the charts.
also suporting the people who made the software is all nice and great, except that the people that own utorrent right now didnt make it… the original creators of utorrent have build a new client called qbittorrent.my software of choice right now is deluge but it’s very lightweight and also very bare bones as far as features and settings go. qbittorrent if you’re coming of utorrent would be a better option if you like to have those features and settings again.
as a side note. i’m not promoting any illegal activity here, but utorrent right now is closely associated with MPAA, i’m not from the US so i couldn’t care less about this but they basicly track every thing you download and bind that to your IP and share this data if you’ve downloaded anything that you legally should not have. as i said i’m not promoting piracy, but privacy i am for. and it’s dissapearing like snow in the sahara.
[tin foil hat mode] i do not want to walk on the street with an electronic billboard recognizing me in some way and displaying an ad to me (for the rest of the street to see) about children’s underwear for example, just because i recently searched and bought some clothes for my kid online…. the street will think me a creep.

OK, gentlemen. I am grateful for your time taken to reply to this thread. Lots of valid and substantiated bits of advice here. I can use any of the torrent software packages you mentioned, quite obviously I would like to choose the best, even though this is going to be just one-time activity since I don’t think I’ll ever have the need to DL via torrent again (unless there’s another update forcing the usage of torrent).
However please note that my original post is an inquiry and a request for directions, as torrent-wise I’m not at all wise. Assuming I’m going to use Deluge (I’ve DL’e the installer), what’s the next step? How do I point it to the file I intend to DL? Is the Deluge UI intuitive enough for an inexperienced user to go on? -
Well, I haven’t tried Deluge…I used Qbittorrent, which is open-source and free of crapware. During installation, just make sure the torrent ‘file association’ box is ticked. Then, once installed, it will open automatically when you click the torrent link in the ‘Releases and Updates’ forum. Download will begin…go and put the kettle on, put your feet up and wait

Many thanks, Mordwand! That’s exactly what I needed to know. As I said, to me it doesn’t matter which torrent access program I will use, it can as well be the one you recommend. The important thing is that now I know actually what to do with it
-
Well like most programs you also need to forward a few ports for Deluge to get the optimal download speed… there are guides over at portforward.com on how to do this…

download and open the torrent file, it should automaticly start deluge if it hasnt done so already, then in deluge a window will pop up asking you if you want to download it and where you want to download it to. there should be a button that says okay at the bottom or something along those lines and the download should start. the first minute might be slow but after that it will pick up steam as it connects to more and more people to download from
edit: lol completely missed a page…
in any case, port forwarding shouldnt be necessery unless the download simply doesnt start at all (could be something else besides ports that’s causing this) but i think it depends on router/firewall in the router on wether port opening is even necesery. i havent done any port forwarding and i got full speed either way
-
Some torrent terminology. A torrent user with open ports is in active mode. Closed ports means passive mode. Passive users can’t connect to other passive users. Passive users can connect to active users. Active users can connect to both active and passive users. Sharing/uploading data is called seeding and downloading data is called leeching.

That may all be true, but as I haven’t been an active user for a while now I have not kept informed.
I will take a look at qBittorrent. There will always be the issue of “free software”

Torrent download successful! qBittorrent did the job in less than 3 minutes!.. Amazing… I now have full 4.33 U1 folder ready to run setup, but that will be done tomorrow. I think I’ll leave the program open overnight to share the file with more users. I’m really grateful to everyone who contributed to overcoming my torrent fears. Thanks for your recommendations and advice.

Also for the record the Deluge webserver was hacked in December, you may want to be careful downloading that stuff directly
