Does your Cougar TQS need a brake job?
-
One of the common ailments of the Tqs is that it loses its throttle friction and becomes loose. This is due to the plastic brake shoe wearing out and/or grease getting on the throttle barrel and brake shoe.
Well the grease issue is easily addressed by cleaning the grease from both the brake shoe and portion of the throttle barrel it presses against.
The worn plastic brake shoe can be remedied either by:
1. Replacing the brake shoe if you can get one
2. By inserting a thin shim betweeen the back of the brake shoe and metal brake lever brake shoe seat. Find and cut to size, a thin layer of of card stock, like an index card, between the back of the brake pad and the lever arm it rests on. Only takes a few mils to make it work fine again. Also, clean the grease as aforementioned. -
Im in the awkward position that my throttle has almost the level of sticktion I want (just slightly too much actually)… but that it also falls forwards at the end of its travel

Ducth Tape on the brake pad, a drop of grease and it works like a charm again

Duct tape… Yet another of its 1 billion applications.
(Punn intended)

I applied tin foil to the brake pad. This alone has helped a lot, but I really need som UHMW tape or at least some glossy heatshrink to apply to the plastic barrel, as it’s still not right yet…

I use UHMW tape on both the barrel and the pad. You can use several layers to whatever your liking on the pad to build it up.

Well, greasing to increase viscosity is not going to solve the issue… it needs to be more smooth and have less stiction, yet still hold its position. Grease will not help it hold its position, and it wont make it easier to shift…
So how do I get into that job anyway? Good pay?

All I can say is that this stuff is right to fix your throttles ills. It holds the throttle grip in position over the throttle base even when I have the grip pushed 75% or more forward. Still smooth and no stiction. C’mon by my house, I’ll give you a demo

Copper Grease - job done

Anybody know how the alleviate the stickiness of the TQS, make its motion smooth?

Copper grease is the quick and easy way. Works wonders for me.
EDIT - just seen my last reply, and will add my Cougar throttle hasn’t been redone since original post. Only took it apart to install Hall Sensor from Viperpits, but that was a quick job and nothing else was done. Trust me, Copper Grease is all you need.
